Please join me for the seventh episode of Conversations with Alan where I will share my father's story of survival during the Holocaust live in The Locher Room on Wednesday, May 5th (Liberation Day) at 7 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. PST. The truth about the Holocaust is that I am lucky to be alive. My life story could have turned out so differently if not for some very brave men and women who risked their lives and the lives of their families to save both my mother and my father when the Nazi's began rounding up Jews in Holland during World War II.
Tonight, I will share my father’s personal story which I didn't know much about. All I knew up was what my father shared in his interview with the SHOAH Foundation back in 1996. Tonight, you will hear some of that interview from my father - in his own words. 61 years after the war ended we received a phone call from Johan DeBoer and learned that Johan’s family gave refuge to my grandparents risking all of their lives. The DeBoer's family were also responsible for reuniting my father with his parents when he arrived by train through the underground. Johan called our home in 2006 to tell us about the story his family had written about my family's experience during WWII and to share that story with all of us. You will hear some of that story in this episode.

I will also revisit my mother's story when I speak to Biep Kuin van de Geest, the daughter of 17-year-old Meindert van de Geest. Meindert is the young man who asked his parents to take my mother and grandmother into hiding during the war. Shortly after my mother’s story aired here in The Locher Room on January 6 episode, I received a beautiful note from Meindert’s daughter who was deeply moved by what I had shared about her father. She will join me tonight from Holland to share her memories of her father and the stories she learned from him about that difficult time.
I started Conversations with Alan to have honest conversations to make us all think about our own place in History. As you listen to my father’s story about the brave men and women who changed the course of his life, my life - consider this: What role would you have played during this time in history? The story you hear tonight will illustrate the difficult decisions and daring acts of compassion that took place to save my father and his family. I share all these stories with all of you so that we never forget what happened to the 6,000,000 Jews and remember Whoever Saves a Life; Saves the World.
