@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
Hi Karen, Thanks for your nice words and a shout-out from Joey (the dog). The ideas, planning, etc. are mostly a result from my life experience. Have always been outdoorsy and previously lived 4-5 years in my travel trailer, traversing the USA, Canada and Mexico. Wanting to recreate that lifestyle at some point, you start to research what is possible, then you start collecting unique ideas, which sometime transform into your own quirky mods. This has been a multi-year process. Then closer to the build, you start looking at the actual construction and finding hardware solutions. The bed was actually quite complicated, having to deal with height for kayak storage under the (open) bed, height of the desk, double pictures, the bed's rotation hardware and the locking mechanism. It took some time, but there is a solution for everything. The most important thing I have, is time. Taking it slow is enjoyable and fun, but it also gives me time to do it right. It also allows me to show all of you out there in RU-vid land, that with relative few tools, anyone can make something they can be proud of. Have a great day. Van Williams & Joey

Hi Dani, Yes, space is important to me. I remember those rainy periods, that you're stuck inside your vehicle for days. Brilliant. I’m looking to build a murphy bed in the front driver side of my class A that has a couch under when folded up! This is the first I’ve seen anyone build a murphy bed in an RV. If you can do it in a van, I can do it mine! I hope 🤞
@beepseatsfindingfoodtreasu8756
I've been gone for the weekend and I have just returned home. Wow! You have a hit!. The Murphy bed is beautiful and I enjoyed how like my lab, Joey laid in the way until you finished doing the leg adjustments, and then moved😀 I was working on an "L" bracket and spring idea for the Murphy I'm installing but the hardware trunks would require 4 3/4" of valuable space to install them. At least I can use the hardware in other locations in the build. Back to the drawing board again!. I did however get the stove/oven cabinet working with the gimbal system! I had to create two pocket doors on each side of the stove face to allow for the side to side motion but it has plenty of travel for uneven surfaces. I just wish I could install a head that would level out!😀. Great job on the whole project! I'm always looking forward to seeing your next video. Thanks for taking the time and effort you put into each production. Beeps.

@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
Hi Michael Self, You make exactly the same points, that I'm making. At the rear of the water tank, I made a built-in coiled, sprayer hose, to clean a dirty bike, clean my dog or take an outside shower. Living space was a major issue when designing the van; now that the build is progressing, it really shows. Thanks for the feedback. Van Williams
@NoteFromSELF
@NoteFromSELF 5 лет назад
@@cargovanconversion Oooh! A COILED shower hose! Thanks for the idea. I'm admitting that to my list! I just decided last night I'm going with a cargo trailer instead of a van. Less expensive than a van and still a blank canvas to do what I want but more durable than manufactured travel trailers. I will live mostly stationary so if rather have the option and save on fuel most of the time.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
@@NoteFromSELF Hi Michael, Here you can see an early stage of the coiled hose: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f4pa_Nc7DTE.html In later videos I add the cover to the hose and water tank. I think that a cargo trailer is a good choice. I always traveled in travel trailers and it's just great to disconnect the vehicle when you're parked somewhere. They're usually also much easier to convert as they come with straight walls and ceiling. I love those with a vertical rear gate, that comes down to form a little deck to sit on. Could put in a proper entry door behind it. Good luck with your plans and keep in touch! Van Williams

I've been debating on a bed across the back, or a bed across the front - neither is a great idea because of my van (only door to cargo area is a lift door on the back, and I bought swivel seats to install in the cab...). But, I really didn't like the idea of a lengthwise bed, or even one that folded to a couch (just me & dog, don't need all that seating, and don't want to have to "make" the bed in any way each night). But your Murphy bed idea is perfect for my situation/wants/needs!
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 6 лет назад
Hi Fluff, Well, I'm single with a dog, so that makes sense. The negative part of a bed across is, that it's too short for most of us, unless perhaps when you go into the walls, but then you lose insulation space. My preference then (apart from the Murphy bed) is a highly elevated bed in the rear. Normally that's from wall to wall, which is not feasible for you, but perhaps you can make that a twin and still have the storage underneath. Have never seen that before. Van Williams

My compliments! You're doing some REALLY nice work, with some neat ideas. I've subscribed and clicked the bell to follow along with your project to learn more for my build. I'm converting a cargo trailer to use full time. So I'll have more space to work with than you do and naturally will be doing some things differently! Since things can get very small and tight when you have to stay inside for a while because of weather etc. I still want to keep every thing compact anyway to keep the space as large as possible space wise. Also so I can have as many conveniences as possible since I am planning full time 24/7 full time living and traveling. Solar etc. for boon-docking as well as enough water and so on to be totally self contained for as long as possible. The trailer is large and can handle a lot of weight so I'll be able to add a lot as long as I'm sensible about it. Keep up your EXCELLENT work I'll be following along. Respectfully JOHN.

Hi Chris, Thank you. Besides getting older, I had some problems getting into the bed mainly because of a lack of a mattress. That should solve it. The bed is also purposely so high off the floor to accommodate a possible kayak underneath and to get to the right elevation for the foldup desk, that will be added to the bed. If I still have problems I'll either trim it or get a ladder :) Van Williams

We're thinking about purchasing a cargo trailer and converting it into a camper. I really like your idea of a side mounted murphy bed. I'd like to attach a table to the backside of the murphy bed, so that during the day we could sit at the table. I saw one video where a guy used a deadbolt to keep the murphy bed in a tucked up position. Thank you for posting your project.
@cargovanconversion

Hi Bernadette Olsen, My bed is even a bit more elaborate, than you're proposing. It will have an small inlaid oil painting added with a hinged picture frame over it. This frame will transform into a desk (like you propose). I will also make a 'box' seat to sit on, which can be used as extra storage space. I'm still struggling to find an appropriate way to lock the bed in an upright position. A deadbolt is one of the many ways; just not sure which one I'll use. Thank you for watching and for the feedback. Love new ideas! Van Williams

I have always thought the Murphy bed would be perfect in an RV. Very nice job. I also like the floor vent. Good idea.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 4 года назад
Thank you. I think ventilation in a van is of utmost importance, even more than insulation; the floor vent in combination with the roof vent, works great. And you don't have to open the windows either. The bed is my pride and joy :) Stay safe and healthy. Van Williams

I love the idea of a Murphy Bed in a van, not sure i like the way it covers the window when it's in the up position though ( especially a vented window)!
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
Hi Robert, It creates an immense amount of floor space, not seen in other vans. If you mean the inset hinged window inside the larger window, I never use it for ventilation. I have a floor vent for that. I love the window at night (when the bed is down), looking out at what's happening outside :) Even when the bed is in upright position, condensation can dissipate and airflow exists. This Friday's video I finally install the upper cabinets. Van Williams

Yours are among the best miter cuts I've seen in van builds. Have you experienced mold or mildew buildup under the mattress? Most commercial bed frames have slats or a combination of springs and heavy duty wire grids on the bottom for ventilation purposes. Not to cool down the human, but to prevent yeast spores from taking over. And insects from nesting.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
Hi Corry, I haven't been able to use the bed (and mattress) yet, so I can't really tell you about mold, mildew or moisture buildup. Will use the area under the mattress also as storage for extra flexible solar panels and with regular access, I don't expect any of those issues. BTW The slats and the wire grids are also used to minimize weight. Will be going to the RTR in Arizona in January, so I will have time to use the bed and see what I want to change about it. An interesting video but there are a couple of points worth bearing in mind. Firstly it looks very heavy due to the strength needed in the base as you are basically lying on a solid sheet of wood (ply?). The second issue is that of ventilation, the damp in beds ends up on the underside and rots out everything below: Both can be solved by using bed slats, which allows the mattress to breath, are lighter and more comfortable for sleeping. To use bed slats in a Murphy bed you'll need to screw them in to rails (ideally using the plastic clips) and then you can replace the heavy base with cloth or some 5mm ply and add a series of breather holes to allow the air from under that slats to circulate. This will give you a lighter, more comfortable bed that will not go rotten.

Very clever bed build & great video! Maybe put some carpet scraps on the bottom of the bed legs so as not to scratch the flooring.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 6 лет назад
Thank you. Ultimately the legs will have some sort of rubber, for the purpose that you mentioned. Right now, the length of the legs is still oversized. The very last thing I do, is a hardwood floor on top of the plywood. When that's done, I'll cut the legs to size and add the rubber feet. But thanks for the input; you are one of the few that noticed! Van Williams

Hi Julie, Thank you. The Murphy bed has been the most watched feature of this build, but I have done many other unique mods, such as the shower-in-a-drawer, a floor vent, a water tank with interior access, etc. I just finished and posted a video of the upper cabinets above the Murphy bed. This week I'm finishing the locking mechanism. The dark square on the bed will receive a bright colored oil painting (copy of a Mondriaan) and on top of that will be another picture frame that is hinged at the bottom, to fold down into a desk. Hope you'll enjoy it all. Van Williams & Joey

Two comments, not trying to nit-pick: it would be advisable to create some airflow in the bed cavity itself, because without it, moisture will not be able to escape from the bed itself and can mold. Additionally, the cabinetry in the bottom is not accessible when the bed is down. It would be advisable to use a swinging cam for the desk portion, so it stays horizontal as you rotate the murphy bed down and can just lay against the floor.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
Hi Lorin, Any input is appreciated; I have included many tips from my viewers into the build already. Airflow is important, in more than one way. Besides the fact, that the bed is down for about 8hrs a day, the wall behind the bed tapers outward from ceiling to floor and the sides are open too. There is also an opening along the bottom of the window, connected to an airgap between the insulation and the outer skin within the wall cavity. I have to keep an eye on that, but I haven't seen any issues yet. It's difficult to reach, but even with bed down, you can reach into the lower cabinets, if necessary. I liked, researched and considered these swinging cams, but didn't like a desk, the length of the bed. By the way, the Murphy bed has a very complicated design. Placement and size of the individual parts (bed, rotating mechanism, desk and both pictures) was difficult to coordinate. I'm glad how it worked out. Have a great day. Van Williams

Cargo Van Conversion I will be starting mine this year and I want to keep my place and be completely comfortable I’m in the uk it really has some stunning places but you need a decent van to do this I did have a ford galaxy but way to small thinking a transit or Peugeot high top lwb any advice on this
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 5 лет назад
@@mrjones2009 Hi Mr Jones, I'm a bit familiar with the UK; was born in The Netherlands, but unfortunately only visited the UK once (mainly the South and Wales). Loved everything of it, but the rain :) That also makes it more difficult to permanently live in a van under these circumstances. We have a few more possibilities here in the US. But I would still love to spend some time in the Lake District and Scotland. Choice of vehicle height and/or length depends on your personal circumstances. High and long is necessary, I think, if you want to add a bathroom, which may not be really required. You don't need an extended length van if you're single, but more convenient with the two of you. Driving and parking is more of a hassle the longer and higher it is, especially where you live :) And you can save a bundle by going smaller. My main issue was the interior height; I'm ~1.75m and can barely stand up straight inside my Medium High van. Didn't need a high van, but the low roof was not an option for me. You would be able to heat a smaller van easier, but would have less roof space in a short version for solar, if you wanted to go that way. Can't give you my thoughts about the brand or model. Even the Transit and Promaster (Ducato) are different from their European cousins. Wish you well. Van Williams

Hi Girl, I'm glad to have you on board! I think, that I have lots of inventive things to show. This week (I have a new video every Friday) I'm starting with the kitchen cabinets; they will include a 'Shower-in-a-Drawer'. You can look for that base of the shower in several of my previous videos, but it's going to be built-in now below the sink. You will be able to pull it out, hang a shower curtain above it on the ceiling, plus a sliding shower head, that hides above the cabinets. Not being handy is not in my vocabulary :) Handiness comes with experience; you get experience, by doing things and before you know, you'll have the confidence to do other small or large jobs around the van. Just try it. Thanks for subscribing, be sure to click on the 'bell' next to it or on notifications or just visit me every Friday on RU-vid. Thanks for the nice words! Van Williams

How do the legs lock on the Murphy bed, once you set them down? I can assume the bed will shift while the person on the bed moving. Possibly having legs kick out.
@cargovanconversion
@cargovanconversion 4 года назад
There is no real lock, that keeps the legs in place. The two pivot points at the wall, keep the bed in place. But there was another issue, that may answer your question and you can see it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F6z9C9YEJ7c.html Th keep the legs from "bouncing" against the upright bed, while driving, I installed these strong magnets at the bottom side of the legs and in a strip of wood/formica on the side of the bed. When the bed is up, they lock in place. The same at the top of the legs, where they "lock" in place when the bed comes down. The latter is convenient while opening up the bed, but of course does not prevent the legs from moving. There width of ~5 inches won't move at all when the bed is down. Van Williams
