Great tutorial. This gave me the information I needed to decide to deal with this exact problem, a broken CFL ballast in a recessed ceiling can. I didn't realize the can was so easy to move out of the way and the ballast was easy to remove until I saw this video. Previously I imagined I would have to access it from the attic or cut through the ceiling. Silly me!

@@handymanjourney this method did not work on the light on top of my sink. I had to directly connect the red and blue to the thicker gauge white and black.

Perfect, man. Great instructional video. I was going to do this project about 5 years ago. It seemed (from what was available at the time) to be too much hassle. Then, a couple days ago, I saw this video. I thought, "that doesn't seem so hard." And it wasn't. Especially when I had this video to go by. I did 6 lights in about 1 hour 20 minutes. By the last light, I was doing them in 10 minutes.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I always get nervous performing electrical work but this video gave me the confidence to try and tackle the job of replacing my old CFLs. Once I got up in the ceiling, my setup had some minor differences but after following this step by step for the first light, I was able to replace all 8 CFLs in my house without even needing a flashlight or this video for lights 2 through 8.

Thank you as always for a very good video. I was able to convert 2 of these lights with your help. I presume that the red and blue wire connections inside the light can, go to either the white or black wires. I admit to leaving the flashlight in the loft and having to remove the can again!!! The main problem I experienced, was gaining access to the fixture mounted directly over a bath, my stepladder was too wide to fit inside the tub, a narrower 2 step option still left a full stretch, access is everything! I enjoy your encouraging videos, as a 'hobby handyman' here is SO CAL I am taking on a bigger variety of jobs now.

I followed your instructions and it was fairly simple once I learned the ballast box I have had wires that I believe were “step down” voltage box….more wires than what you depicted…anywho…I got it out and swapped. The next half dozen will be faster for sure…thx 👍🏼

Love it! It was a concise tutorial. In the last wiring step, I couldn't tell if you had all 4 wires in 1 wing connector but I figured it was blue/white AND red/black - the same way done on the ballast box. Thanks, man!

Good job. The ONLY thing I would add is to right a quick little note reminding you what color wire you connected to the hot and neutral.... for people who are new to this. I can just see someone closing it all up and when it comes to the connections they can’t remember. Thanks for putting out this video. @@handymanjourney Hey Allen, I got through most of the rewiring. But just realized there's no way to refasten my can back up there. There was a single nut coming through a bracket, through the can, and to a wing nut. But once we removed the can, there's no way to position and fasten that wingnut from the inside. Any suggestions?

Side note. Where they have several in the same room, probably good idea to buy a few extra identical LEDs so any replacements match the style and color temperature of the others. (If any happen to die over the next decade). Good video, thank you Adam.

Those 4 prong led bulbs are the worst bulbs to change out. I always break the bulbs when pulling them out. This is the video I was looking for!

Thank you for your question! You would use the same process just instead of wiring in an LED light trim wire in a light socket.
