This video helps me a lot. I have a BMW Z4 ( Z89 ) also with a roof problem, code A690. So I try to learn with mij scanner ( BM700 ) to find the right wires and pins and I think I have them lol . Thanks Dan and keep up the good work. Greetings from the Netherlands. ))))

Dan, if you want to get rid of that high mic input volume at the start of every recording then turn off auto level of mic input on the camera, set it to manual and adjust level. Since you got your mic attached to your shirt all the time the level don’t need to be adjusted automatically. Anyway, you are awesome. You make it look so easy to diagnose and you explain very good. You are the best! ❤️

Nice diagnosis! I freaking love the original schematics from BMW. So minimalistic but clear in contrary to some other brands and services offering schematics. It was also a nice touch that you confirmed your diagnosis and got it opened by bridging the left microswitch signal to the right o the module. I use similar techniques for diagnosing diversity antenna's on e61's and e91's, small (fused) wire between the positive battery terminal in the trunk and the first pin of the diversity antenna. if it responds to the key it's a wire break and if it does not it's the antenna, or possibly the CAS module not processing or somehow receiving the signal but i've never seen that happen before. anyway back to the roof, if someone was feeling less confident and adventurous they could just enable service mode through the service functions in ista or bidirectional control from a decent scan tool. then the roof will operate again without accounting for it's safety switches allowing you to open the trunk and get to the switch without unpinning wires ;)

Great video! A good tip is to use shrink tube with glue inside. The glue will melt by the heat of the heat gun and when it seeps out of the ends you know you've got a 100% waterproof repair.

12:32 you missed the support for the cable tie, they use those supports so the wire itself isn't stresses by the tie, attention to detail makes for reliable repairs.

What a Rube Goldberg Design... Good Job Dan !

At 03:37 you start to compare the switch signal with the known good right-hand side switch. I can see why you do this for this video. But the signal from the switch should be clear from the wiring diagram. But that is often unclear. How did they draw the circuit? Power off? Roof open? The roof between open and closed? Roof closed? They should draw a timing diagram of all the signals involved in an open-close sequence. Reminds me of TV repair manuals. They draw the voltages and signal waveforms for test points in the diagram for specified conditions. Sometimes the status of a switch is implied by the name: Roof panel 2 closed kind of tells you that the switch is activated (read closed) when the condition (Panel closed) is satisfied. Nice video!

Great diagnostic. Very informative. Thanks. Same symptoms as my e89. Rear mode not closed. Roof can’t be opened, trunk kid can’t be open either even using diagnostic tool( ISTA, can be open shortly, then closed again automatically). Manually open the roof the only way? If luckily enough have the answer.

Thanks Dan! This really helped us fix the right rear microswitch on '09 Z4. We did all your steps to diagnose. We found the wire break a foot down the microswitch cable. Jumping the R/L switch signals together is a great idea and allowed us to open the roof to work on the switch wiring. Needle probes help the jump and for depinning. Lots of learning here!

Are you sure soldering is the best solution because when you look at factory repair manual they always suggest a heat shrink butt connector because when soldering it reduces the flexibility of the wires and it might break again near the repair joint especially when a wires moves on top or trunk hinges etc ... otherwise you’re are the man .

I hade a few jobs like this on convertibles, m.switches that needed to be cleaned, or not touching the contact points properly. I fix them, but as you say, there was no parts involved, so the costumers belived that was an easy job. And they expected towards nothing much to pay. How do you charge the costumer ,in this case? Thank you very much for the clear explanation, I also had this problem. However, I am looking for a device that allows me to open the trunk. is there a simple reading device that can do this? For example the ANCEL BM700 - If there is a roof fault, I can no longer get into the trunk....

Fantastic trouble shooting....I just wonder if this is a common problem due to fatigue of the wire bending back and forth? Is the other side in question for the future?

Thanks Dan, because of you i found the issue to why my top isnt working. Similar to your issue, my wire was broken but on the microswitch not the main cable. However you pretty much gave me an insight how to proceed to work on the problem!. Wish you were in the States side, i would love for you to work on my z4.

As a trained electronics engineer, your troubleshooting this problem is great, but depends entirely on the CTM diagram, and pin out of the plug. Where is this diagram available.

Hi Dan, My wife owned a 2006 Chrysler crossfire with convertible top. I have no idea of troubleshooting electrically, I have checked fluid level of pump, checked for leaks, all ok. I can manually open and close but when hitting button it beeps but nothing happens. Windows don’t come down either, your help greatly appreciated.

Exactly the same thing happened to my third stop light on a 2011 Citroen Tourer. The harness running from the chassis to the tailgait, was bending so hard at the pivot point, that the wire inside broke up. Had to install a new piece of wire, and route it a bit better, so that it won't bend that much, and it won't cause any trouble again. I actually expected to see the same thing here: why the wire snapped in the first place. I'm guessing a hard bend on the harness, due to crappy design on the harness routing. It is quite a complicated hinge mechanism after all. Now, these Tesa fabric tapes don't realy excite me. My experience with them wasn't the best possible. The one I got doesn't stand the heat, so after about a year, the adhesive starts melting away, and if somebody tries to undo it, they get their hands all black and dirty and gooey. It's a yuk situation. Personally, when covering that harnes back, I'd 've used that neat self voulcanizing tape. I realy suggest that for quality wrappings of harnesses. I've wrapped wire harnesses on my engine, and no problems whatsoever. And also, let's not forget the propper professional choice of heat shrink tubing when soldering wires !!! Excellent choice.

I hope you can answer this question I have a 2016, 435 I convertible the rear diverter would routinely fall and strike the rear sensor. Well now the roof will not go down and the car doesn’t recognize that the diverter is in a down position. Do you think it damage the sensor and if it did damage the sensor, how do you get the cover off and replace the sensor feel like making a video on it

What made the wire break in the first place? I often see that the wire gets between the mechanism of the convertible top, so i always check the wire clearance in every possible position of the top in such a case.

I wish the rest of autoelectricians or automechanics were of your kind in diagnosing skills. I give you 50/50😎. Alright what is the best scan tool ? Autel MK 908P Launch 431 Pro or you SnapOn and do they come with wiring diagram or one has to download them as pdf ?

The Signal wire should always show an elevated voltage; you should never see "0" Volts on that wire, correct Dan?
