A Myford ML7-R long bed is upgraded into a Super-7B by a new lathe saddle, new cross slide and a new topslide. In addition, the Quick Change Gearbox and the Power Cross Feed of the 7B is mounted. #lscad

I own a 1949 Myford ML 7 but have added the S7 top slide to give a longer cross travel and better feedscrews and dials . Not the crappy muzak ones. I have purchased a gearbox but not yet installed it. Unfortunately Myford hadn't yet, in 2949, made arrangements for the gear box to be fitted on mine so the two mounting holes need to be drilled which needs a custom made jig. One thing I noted you have not done is to install thrust bearings on the lead screw right hand end. Makes for much easier traverse especially with the graduated handwheel at that end. I'd love to do the auto cross feed but I don't think my bed will accommodate the S7 carriage because of wider lands on the bed required. Also mine has the 5/8" leadscrew not the 3/4" which later lathes used to accomodate the keyway for the auto cross feed. Otherwise a neat conversion. Pity no verbal coverage but I'm guessing English is not your first language. Thanks for the subtitles and the posting. I noted you running your gear trains dry. No lubrication. That makes them very noisy, wear faster. Just needs a couple of drops of way oil to quiet them down and run much smoother.
Thank you very much for your response and your tips. Indeed, English is not my first language but German. The gear train is only lubricated with motor oil. In fact, grease would be far better but I do not like to put the used sprockets smeared with grease into the stash box. Best regards from Northern Bavaria!

Hello, Excellent video and congratulation on the upgrade. As this was don't over 18 months ago is everything still working okay with regard to the cross slide power feed? I have been thinking of doing the same on my Long bed Myford, however mine is a TriLeva ML7 and I already have the gearbox. I am not 100% sure if mine is the same starting point as yours. Excellent presentation. Could you have re-used the upper topslide casting from the ML7-R in the conversion? Would it fit the new Super 7 top slide base? Thank you!
Thank you very much for your response! I beg your pardon for my delayed answer: The upper topslide of the Super-7 is about 20 mm longer than the slide of the ML7-R but the dove tail appears to have the same dimensions.
I have a longbed metric, with powerfeed a norton gearbox and the normal Nottingham quadrant. British engineering at it's best some say. Combination quadrant and gearbox are said to cover most of the commonly used English pitches, in the Myford quick change gearbox manual. British advertising at it's best i would say. Unless you change the gear ratios there is not a single thread pitch you can turn. So you start to calculate the gear ratio's and you will find some acceptable solutions, or after a few evenings of trying to damage your brain, you can choose the better solution and buy and install the convertion set. However, for turning fine surfaces you will have to reinstall the nottingham quadrant again. So, a very nice hoby lathe, but don't think it will be the easy way to turn fine surfaces and to turn all kinds of thread pitches. But it is said to be the best Brittish engineers could do.
