Looking at converting much of my ammo to longe term storage. The ammo shortage has me thinking long term. Using 50 cal usgi ammo cans and desiccants. we will even play with some vacuum-sealed applications.

@@EagleRun23 I've been here, grown older watching Hickock, still pissed at Colin Noir for selling mask and I'll probably be long gone by the time Brandon Herrera gets the ak50 finished. I've been around but seriously I'm glad I found your channel. Found it on a search for long term storage. I've always gone with the metal cans for all the storage. Some stuff 25 years or more and it's still like brand new. I plan on selling about 10k rds and putting the rest into long term for my kids. I don't see it getting better and it's like I just told one guy " it's only an investment if you're willing to sell it ". I feel bad for the ones that didn't prepare but that's on them. With what I've put away through the years as an instructor and the luck of having a father that had an incredible gun store before he passed away ( We chose to give up the ffl, the government does not want citizens having guns. ) my kids will never need to buy ammo in their lifetimes . Also I'm getting nice 50 cal cans $10 each. Kiloton tactical 👍

I was asleep when the water began to rise during Hurricane Harvey. My Ammo cans were on the floor. My brother called me around 7:00 am to ask me if I got flooded I went to get out of bed , my leg went into 24 inches of water. Through out the morning I started getting things out of the water to dry. By the afternoon I got to my Ammo. They were under a shelf , so unable to float , my Ammo was completely dry. So now I store all kinds of things in ammo cans. Metal of course.

I'm a plumbing contractor. A few weeks ago I found 3 boxes of Winchester XX 12 guage high brass 6 shot shells , boxes still sealed under a lavatory cabinet. Owner said they were her father's who died in 1975, could I dispose of them . Took them to the range and " disposed" of 5 from each box to test. Shot perfectly and patterned great. Called back and told her to take 25.00 off invoice, made us both happy

My Dad left me his 30-30 1968 Buffalo Bill Winchester Model 1894 and a box of Federal ammo. He only put one shot through it. He bought it new in 1971. The ammo was as old as the gun and never stored "properly" at all. Still looked fine. Shot about 10 rounds of it, and it worked great.

I've refurbished several with a cleaned and lubed seal and power coat. A couple of them even have a polyurea. They were really rough to start and now should last decades even with abuse. Homemade desiccant and a good seal keeps everything pristine.

Best place to get em for sure. I pick up one or two every week. Brand new so no worry about dry, old seals or rust/dents. Only thing I've noticed though is they're only in store at that price. Can't buy em online from WalMart, at least not the $12.74 ones.

I put the purchased/received date of on manufacture's box either with a sharpie or small white stickers ( 01/2021 or JAN/2021), keep them in their original box just in case you have trouble with that ammo and you can contact the manufacture for help/refund/replacement. I purchase desiccant packs from eBay and store all in 50 cal ammo cans, each can is tagged and logged in a binder and on excel spreadsheet. I always use the older ammo first if I go to the range.

Late note! You can DIY your desiccant packs with 000 steel wool and baggies. Put a bit of steel wool in an open baggie and then close it up, the wool will rust easier than the brass would.

I do think people get too paranoid about ammo storage. Yes I agree proper storage is awesome, but quality ammo matters more. Few years ago my grandfather passed away. He had some surplus 45 acp in cardboard boxes in the garage. Lots of corrosion on the brass, but the crimp looked good. Pulled one and the powder looked good. Shot it all and everyone went boom. They had to be over 50 years old. Now the blazer boxes that were out there were junk. That ammo was maybe 10 years old. The corrosion was so bad you could just pull them apart by hand.

I was think about getting a over the shoulder bag the other day. I have a full size one right now but I don’t always need to carry something so big. I use the metal and the Plano boxs with boxs ammo in them been working great for years I only stack them on there selfs. None of mine have deformed. I have ammo in the factory boxs in these cans with desiccant bags going on 10 years and still looks new. These set in my garage locker. I use little vasiline on the seals.

Geryon food saver came a few days ago from Amaxxx. $50. Order more bags at same time as the sample is too small to be useful. 8" is fine for ammo. I started packaging 9 mil and 38 special. Machine really sucks out the air. Add some desiccant. Loose pack is marginally better than the rounds in internal holder inside the ammo box. By loose I mean one box per bag and line up all the rounds in rows, 16 per row and 3 rows nice and flat. Slide them over to machine and suck out the air and seal. The bag becomes rigid. My plan is to rotate stock. Use old first. Do not put cardboard in pack. House is air conditioned so this may be overkill, but product costs more than prime beef. Last tip I cut the 8" bag 12 " long. That way there is a large flap that Allows multiple uses of same bag as there is enough to reseal several times. Lots of things ruin ammo like air pollution from household cleaners that attack the primers.

Good video. I store my ammo in metal ammo cans and found that for me it was better to take the ammo out of the carboard boxes and fill them in 100 round Ziploc bags. I tear off the label from the box and place that inside the bag and seal it up so I know what is in there. I found this stores more ammo in an ammo can and is a better use of space. I put the silica gel packs in the ammo can and keep them sealed shut and labeled on the outside the round count and caliber. This works well for me. Thanks,

And also, u can make ur on silica packs. Order some "loose leaf" tea bags off Amazon. Go to ur local pet store and get crystal cat litter. It will say on back 100% silica crystals. Put in the tea bags and staple close. After about 6 months, throw them in the over on 250° for a hour and reuse! That simple!

Good cheap system for long term storage. Just store it up on a shelf in case my basement ever floods.
