Sorry for the grainy video and audio issues in my OBS capture, I don't do youtube full time. Also sorry for it being so long but I wanted to capture my entire thought process/journey of the design. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Yes, I can agree here - this is excellent content, and presented in an excellent format. It may be too long for someone with the attention span of a goldfish, but, they won't be the ones with the determination to actually attempt something like this.

Cool video ! I appreciate all the work that went into this. I have been using $4 USB C to "stupid barrel connector" adapters from AliExpress, but your solution is better integrated. Good job !

how was with this adapter ? is it work flawlessly ?
@the_bootloader
@the_bootloader 2 года назад
@@FERRYKANA yes, I am using it right now. You just have to be careful to use a USB C power supply that can supply the right voltage and at least as many watts as the original power adapter. Very happy with it.
@the_bootloader
@the_bootloader Год назад
@koreantelevision it depends of multiple factors. Some laptop brands such as Dell or Lenovo, have some type of communication in the adapter that tell the laptop what is the speed (maximum current) of the charger. Typically when you use a USB C PD adapter like I mentioned, you are losing this communication. Usually the adapters are faking an adapter of a certain maximum current and this is fixed. This is super important point and you need to be very careful to only use a USB C PD power supply that can deliver at least whatever current the adapter advertises to the computer. Say you have a Dell laptop that can only use a 65W adapter, and you use a Dell to USB C PD adapter that advertises itself as a 90W adapter. As long as you use a USB C PD power supply that can provide at least 65W you will be fine. Now if you use the same 90W adapter on a laptop that can actually use the full power of a 90W adapter, you will overload a 65W USB C PD powersupply. And if you use a 90W USB C PD adapter with a 90W USB C PD power supply on a Dell laptop that requires a 130W adapter, then the laptop will see it can only draw 90W, and at best it will work and charge slower, and at worse it will complain or refuse to boot. So you need to be careful to choose the right adapter and right USB C PS power supply, but if you do so, it will not be slower. If you do it incorrectly you will get bad results and may damage something. This is why those adapters should only be used by advanced users who understand what they are doing Hope this helps!

@@the_bootloaderbut how would that negotiate the voltage since there is no ic or anything?

@@Justgreen89925 The connector usually has a PD chip that tells the charger what Voltage to use.

Hey so I'm thinking of picking up a project like this in a little bit of a different way; Spinning a USB C PD to DC jack board with both the USB C port and the equivalent DC pin on the CCA. In your exploration did you see if changing the type of wattage in the 1--Wire chip made a difference on the dell side? Like 45W vs 90W?
@jakobnator5841
@jakobnator5841 3 года назад
I am not quite sure what you mean. Are you going to have an onboard adapter that can passthrough either the barrel connector or the type-c port? As for what the 1-wire, the laptop only scans for the voltage (19.5V) and the wattage (45W). I believe if the wattage is lower it will not charge but it will still power, and if it's greater (90W) it will still work fine. Although I suppose there might only be hardcoded/max wattage value that it would accept. Here is a blog post that goes into a little more in detail: hclxing.wordpress.com/2014/02/09/hacking-a-dell-power-adapter-part-iii/

Holy smokes, thank you for that video! I looked several times in the last 3 years if there is a solution to modify the exact same machine. A few days ago i got back to the topic and could not find any new finished implementation, so i got to work on my own. Now i found your video by accident and you've already done everything better than i ever would have :D Is there any way that i can contact you outside of yt and maybe get access to the files and stuff you've used on the project? Ofc i would also be willing to pay something for the time saving you would give me with this. Also you should consider to add in the title that this is for the xps 13 9343 so people can find it! I just found it on hackaday by accident but even there was no model name mentioned, i just recognized the mainboard instantly. Would love to hear from you and thanks for your amazing work, keep it up!

Can you make a tutorial how to change the tradicional Dell G3 3590 input power for a usb-c power delivery entry/supply? I'm not a electronic guy but the power supply of this laptop is GIANT! I mostly use my notebook for study and not gaming so its so inconvenient have carry a big and heavy power source in my backpack. Thank you and congratulations for your channel!

What if I already have USB type C laptops but they don't support charging via that USB how can we modified that (SS USB C 3.1 gen 2) to become (SS USB C 3.2 gen 2 with charging capability) and maybe it will sacrifice the super-speed data transfer function but it's worth trying because I really want the joy of being able to charge my laptop using usb c cable (the thinner and most compact charger of the future) Can you help me?
@jakobnator5841
@jakobnator5841 2 года назад
You would almost certainly would not be able to repurpose the old type C circuitry to support pd charging. You would have to lose current USB connectivity on one port. Design something similar to what I did then have it tap into the existing charge circuitry and type c port. If you were really crafty you could then also tap back into the usb interface that you cut out, but that probably would require a different usbc pd integrated circuit. Then you are really in the weeds
