Converting Our CRANE into a DUMP TRUCK! Part 2

Our 1960's Bucyrus Erie Crane has been decommissioned for the last 6 years, and has been in storage collecting dust. Last Fall we purchased a dump truck bed with the intent to make this crane into something we could use. We finally have found the time to make this crazy idea a reality! In Part 2 we fabricate the pieces and parts to mount the box to the chassis. We also install a PTO and pump, and hook up the remaining parts to put this dump truck to work!

Really great job making your own parts for the tail and pump brackets. Really nice to see the job completed and the old truck frame and cable back on the road. Nice test for the tripper too

Thanks! The new plasma cutter made the project go really smooth with the fabrication parts. It took a little over 2 weeks to complete the project, fitting it in between the daily towing jobs .

Look at that fancy plasma cutter! Quite the upgrade in cut precision when compared to the the oxy acetylene torch that many of the old Wilcox Garage projects were made with through the years....

The torches still have their place in the shop, but they certainly will take a backseat now for any projects that require cutting out metal.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! Hope it had enough details to keep it interesting, but not too much footage to make it boring.

A plasma cutter is a nice device, often better than a cutting torch. You make something beautiful out of it.

Thank you! This has been our first big project using the plasma cutter, and it did everything we could ask of it.

Very cool transformation. I guess it was better than a trade in on the truck when it was a crane?
@WilcoxGarageRecovery
@WilcoxGarageRecovery 9 месяцев назад
Thank you! That was our mentality...with the crane being so old, it had very little value, and no place would probably even take it in on a trade. Now that it's a dump truck, we actually have uses for it, and if we decide to sell it later on it will be an easier time selling.

With the wheelbase being that long, would adding a tag axle be required? Thats a lot of box for a 10 wheeler!
@WilcoxGarageRecovery
@WilcoxGarageRecovery 9 месяцев назад
If someone was wanting to haul heavy loads with it, yes a tag axle would be needed. Since our main use will be hauling bulkier, light loads from truck accidents, it will serve its purpose just fine without one.

Steve haver would’ve had that bed on there quicker with the crane you took off of that truck. He was the best crane operator I’ve ever seen, and your grandpa new it . He was spot on with the truss setting, no one was better at it . 😢

The crane could have been quicker, but it also wouldn't have boomed under a 12 ft overhang and lifted it out either 😂 It would be interesting to have a number of all of the houses that crane set trusses on in its lifetime!

How much did it cost and did you have to change the front end too a 12 k front axle
@WilcoxGarageRecovery

We already had the chassis, but probably had around $4,000 plus our time in converting it to a dump truck. We didn't do anything with the axles.
