We did that once on a steam roller but unfortunately left the blower valve open. Suddenly a big 'THROMP' and the bacon came flying through the chimney XD

I'm reminded of a tale I read in a book of "footplate yarns" where the driver and fireman hadn't had a bite to eat all day due to being too busy, and finally in the evening got a minute to cook some bacon and eggs by this method. Then, just as the food was about ready, the guard (I think it was) steps onto the footplate and operates something (I forget what it was, but he was testing something for safety) which caused a huge draft which sucked all the food right to the back of the firebox. You can bet they had some words to say to him for that dick move! Especially since there wasn't another spot of food to be found anywhere in that town at that time of the evening! The person telling the story says they were absolutely ravenous by the time they got off duty hours later, and immediately went in search of any place where they could get food. (I may have some of the details wrong. I misplaced my copy of the book some time ago and haven't found it even through years of searching, even though I'm certain I still have it)

At the station, James had to wait at a signal for the guaranteed connection, it would take long as the train wouldn’t arrive in another hour, in the mean time, the driver and the fireman thought it would be nice to have their lunch, they cooked fresh meat in the firebox for a few minutes and had a lovely supper of cooked stake. soon Thomas arrived with his branch line train. They exchanged passengers, the signals turned green, and lunch time over, James set of down the main line.

I've had coal-shovel chicken, courtesy of White Rose Pullman Luxury Dining. The mobile restaurant was a steam-crane stopped for lunch at Ingrow West platform, when we were laying out the yard. Our chef du jour was Richard; we had to use the crane because the BBQ had a supply of slack charcoal that refused to burn. It were reet grand!
@kevfrombutterley

That's brilliant! Your steam cranes do a good job. I brought my girls up in October 2016 and my youngest, the birthday girl, was treated to a ride in the Grafton crane at Oakworth by the lovely couple running it. We had cake on the train and a great day all round. Lovely!

Sorry from the late reply. The video is pretty much in real time so it's what you see here really. How quick things cook depends on how hot the fire is and the technique of the person holding the shovel. This is the bit of the job no one usually sees or asks questions about 😂

Surprisingly, he's right, but only when it's used for cooking. I saw this on TV just a few days ago. Most of the oils which we think of as healthy and better for cooking because the oil is polyunsaturated actually produce poisons when heated to cooking temperatures. It's not much, but it might still accumulate over time. Over-all, animal based fats and oils are the healthier choice for cooking.
