Great video Ken. I just retired from 42 years in wholesale HVAC as a manager for most of it. I used Wrightsoft exclusively but was always intrigued by cool calc. Your video answered some questions for me, so I’ll be using it to do some consulting for local contractors who do not want to do their own. Thanks again for sharing this very helpful, well done session.

Thank You Ken. Very timely for several projects I’ll be starting soon.

I am impressed with your insights into the two ways of calculating the heat load. I recently came across Cool Calc and it sounded to good to be true. I still signed up an account and started using it, but I had no idea it would turn into something pretty decent! I'd like to see tutorials from you in using Cool Calc. I'm sure all user skill levels could benefit from tutorials. 👍

I have a question on the cool calc where it asks about plants? Does it literally mean plants?
@KenTraining
@KenTraining Год назад
Yes, House plants produce humidity and the AC unit needs to have capacity for that.

I know they give only one CFM for each room. Is there a formula to calculate for both heating and cooling

Hi Ken, Very informative video! I'm from the UK and Manual J/CoolCalc isn't used here for heat loss calculations (as far as I'm aware) and so I'm not very familiar with it. Are the variations in the climate data (temperature, relative humidity, direct radiation etc.) taken into account when calculating the annual heating/cooling energy consumption (BTUh)? Is a heating-up capacity also taken into account when calculating the peak power (BTU/h)? I hope I got the American equivalents of kWh and kW correct... Cheers, Charlie

Yes the Climate Data is taken into account in the Manual J. The energy consumption in KWH is NOT taken into account. Manual J only cares about BTU/H Loss and Gain.

I'm struggling to understand how to define a "conditioned crawlspace" in CoolCalc, specifically a crawl space that is heated/cooled from the bare exposed ducts. Not a conditioned basement per se. This meats the IRC definition of a conditioned space. How do you define this in CoolCalc? thanks!

I am not sure of the answer, Sorry.

I struggled with this as well. The solution/differentiation was if the basement has insulated walls it then became conditioned (finished).

I also used both and got almost the same heating load calculation results of 40000btuh for my 1600 sqft home. My question is how do i use that to properly size a ductless heat pump? I'm trying to figure out if a15000btu one is more than sufficient or if an 18000 would be more adequate or if it's overkill?? I would like help about this please.
