**SKIP TO 8:15 FOR PLAYING CLIPS** Hey guys! Today we're checking out my newest vintage Greco, a Les Paul Custom copy. This one has an interesting build design and sounds pretty great!
The eg, egf Greco's that are mahogany and thick maple just like the Gibsons, but you have to get them in the 700 or above range. the Mint collection edition also has a long neck tenon the others don't. they are labelled eg59-70 for 1959 700 series or 57-60 for 1957-1960 then 70 or above for the good wood. They also have a egc 68- for 1968
Greco, Aria Aria Pro II, Ibanez, Burny, Tokia and many others were made in the Matsumoto factory back in the seventies. They were copying what Gibson and Fender were doing in the seventies. The awesome part is that these copies were better construction and build quality than the real deal. I have a black 1975 Aria Les Paul Custom with a maple bolt on neck. It's a semi hollow plywood body. I also have a black1977 Aria Pro II Les Paul Custom with a mahogany body and neck. The neck is a set in short tendon and the body is the sandwich style with a thin piece of maple between the two pieces of mahogany. Both guitars have the open book diamond inlay headstock. The headstock on the Aria Pro II is a shovel head style. After refurbishing them and upgrading all the hardware and electronics, these guitars sound awesome! I even put Dimarzio Super 3 Distortion and PAF pickups in the guitars.
Loving the old Greco. I have an LP knock off. It's a Magnum which doesn't matter much. There were a number of brands in the 70's and they all came from the same factories in Japan and Korea. I think Greco had set necks though while many of the others had bolt on. Regardless, they're all pretty cool. I bought the Magnum for giggles just to have an old yet affordable LP. Spent a whopping $50! It came with a Gibson TTop in the neck and a Gibson Sonex in the bridge. Clearly, not the original pickups.
Here's a killer one from the guy I bought both of mine from: reverb.com/item/17503454-greco-eg600-3pu-japan-vintage-1978-ace-frehley-style-electric-guitar-1978-cherry-sunburst
Nice guit i got a greco lp custom black one i think its a late 80s one its been repainted it is my fave guit its quite heavy but just plays so nice sounds pretty decent too
Guitar really shines with that hiwatt low gain crunch. in all three positions. how does it feel to play with that middle bucker? does it get in the way of your picking at all? not sure how willing you are to mod that thing, but it would be cool to hear a mod that activated all three pickups.
I literally just got done wiring it up with Peter Frampton's set up. There is now a master volume and tone for the neck and bridge pickups, and then a separate volume and tone for the middle pickup. Just waiting on some other supplies to come in and I'll get it back together!
I want a 2 pickup black Greco to turn into a stoner rock guitar. Have an Epi LP Custom from Korea that kind of is, but I think it would be cooler with one of these
Always like your videos Lucas, you come across as being likeable and genuine. You got me interested in Greco's with your first Greco. I've since been learning about them and liked what I've read so I have bought 2. One is a '78 SE 500 and the other is a '75 EG 480 LP. I haven't received them yet. There are copies of the original catalogs available at MyLesPaul.com. www.mylespaul.com/threads/catalogs-collection-online-greco-fernandes-burny-ibanez-and-more-soon.416631/ Japanese Tokai guitars are worth checking out also.
Don't know much about the old flagship Gibson L5 Archtop (a laminate TOP since forever.....and a Gibson Firebird is a 9 piece body) do you? De-lamination. Hahaha, I don't think so. That is a 78 and proper Japanese made.
Grecos were known to be actually nicer than a lot of the models they copied from Gibson in the 70's. Actually, a lot of Gibson copies from then are made well
Have a '78 2 pickup Custom. Has a beautiful nitro finish. Maybe it will start delaminating in another 40+ years lol... BTW, Gibson only cost more because because of the "perceived" value.
