Today we take a look at some cooler growing orchids, such as the Miltoniopsis, Masdevallias and more!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
There are some Orchids which are doing quite well for the temperatures in my grow room! Oncidopsis Nelly Isler and Miltoniopsis hybrids appear to do quite ok. They still flourish in colder months, but things are not bad.
Dendrobium cuthbertsonii is doing great as well and is still in bloom! He has been in bloom for the past almost half a year :P
Angraecum germinyanum is also doing ok, I am surprised by this one! This orchid was super set back at some point.
Masdevallias... are not happy at all. I am going to plan B, as they look like they will not make it at this point :(

I know most folks use Celsius but I appreciate the posting of Fahrenheit as well on the screen🤗

Just a quick correction: evaporative cooling works better with lower humidity, that's why we prefer dry heat over humid heat 😊

Glad to hear that some cool growers are doing okay. You give hope for mine to survive the summer.

I was put my Masdevallias in a fridge for a night. It helped to survive hot summer nights.

Living in Houston, TX I definitely feel your pain with summer heat. We have 4 seasons: 1)summer, 2) still summer, 3)not quite summer, and 4)almost summer here. Since your humidity is low in the summer, have you thought about building an evaporative cooler, aka a "swamp cooler?" They work best with low humidity. Lots of RU-vid video tutorials showing many kinds you can make, but most all use a water container, evaporation pad, flex tubing, a water pump, and a fan. You can set your cool growers in front of it and could possibly just use it at night if you wanted to get that temperature drop. Cooler more humid air. A lot of people in hot dry parts of the U.S. use these. Something to consider looking into....

Ha! I am almost from Houston (inner loop south of I-10) and was going to pen this exact comment. I switched to catts since nothing down here because I can't get the phals to rebloom... Because when it does get cool enough, it's either windy, rainy, or both!

Dani! I literally gasped when you showed your Masdevallias! So sad!!! I think that dropping night temps. for these guys are so important for them to thrive. Thanks for the update on your cool growers. We cannot grow them all....sadly. Good luck on your efforts to make them live in your climate.

very sad! I have one masdy and I have it in selfwatering wicking pot in sphag moss. I only water it so the moss gets moist and then I let it dry out. In between the watering I mist it daily whenever i walk by it. It seems to really like this care.

Thanks for the comment that cool growers don't do well in semi-hydro. Answered one of my questions. I bought my final 3 miltoniopsis for growing in s. FL USA. I haven't had any luck with them in the past. Splurged on large plants (more bulbs) and am hopeful that they will have more strength to make the adjustment to my climate and growing conditions (instead of single bulb plants.)

Younger Cuths (unestablished, plants ik less than optimal conditions) will bloom themselves to death, use all their energy up and not grow than slowly die over the next year so cutting the buds off until you've had them a few years and they've gotten a good size can save them

My home space has great humidity and stays cool year round around highest 74 F in summer and highest 62 F in winter. Sounds like these orchids would be perfect for me EXCEPT I can't find them anywhere in my area. Not even online :/

Meanwhile here in northern sweden we've barely had any days yet this summer that have reached 20 degrees and above...

Have you tried water culture? I have actually had some luck with it. One of my phals has been thriving. For the first time since I bought it (many years ago) it has produced a spike. Leaves are healthier too. I have been learning along the way. I did burn some of the roots with fertilizer, but seems to be recovering. I have it in a clear glass container with the roots in about 2 inches of water. Might work for your cool ones.

Have you tried opening the windows at night? If the minimum night temperature outside is lower than 25 degrees, which is likely, maybe it makes things slightly better

Hi, yes not sure how I did not make that clear :) all windows open at night, outside temp yesterday was 28C :)))))

I think it would be cool if you made a terrarium out of a fish tank and added a fogger to it. It would probably keep the orchids cooler.

Have you tried misting fans? It helps cooling rooms down.

Perhaps a water cooler could help in the growth space? It much easier on electricity consumption and would help with humidity too.

What about trying a vivarium for the masdes/ Dracs with a cooling system 30 gallon tank?

Danni all four of my cool growing orchids - 2 Nelly Islers and 2 Miltoniopsis perished this summer 🥺 I tried keeping the room cooled at the same 26-27 degrees as you but these orchids didn't like that as well. All gone now. I think I give up with cool growers, can't have it all I guess ☹️

Danny, I have a couple cool growing orchids in my collection right now. What I realized from experience and from talking to other orchid hobbyist that grow cool growing orchids is that they ABSOLUTELY need to have that night time cool down otherwise they will suffer. Most of these people are growing the cool growers in a separate grow space where they can control the temps and humidity without running AC etc. Check out orchidpapa_g2 and kevin_holcomb_atl on IG on their setups for the cool growers.

For your cool growers think "wine cooler" as they have glass doors.
