Thanks for the explanation, as an avid reader, I romanticise owning/working in an old bookshop, but I do realise also the hard work that must go on behind the scenes. Here in Melbourne, I frequent a store just like yours, been open for many years and its filled to the brim with old tomes, my kinda paradise. One day I may be lucky enough to visit your wonderful book filled cave.

Very much appreciate this perspective - my wife and I are opening a Used Book Store in May/June. We are now in the process of gathering inventory and truly hope to get as buried in books as you seem to be. Thank you for taking the time to do this...

Beautiful store man. Warm and inviting. Thank you for showing. It's so nice too to see that independent book stores are still around. They're honestly some of the best things in life.

Hi I just discovered your channel. Great information 😁 I really want to open my own bookstore here in GA. I do have experience being a mgr for a major bookstore (3 years) but I’m having a hard time finding a small store front. Do you have any suggestions on how to start my business

Well thanks for watching and reaching out. I recently made a video titled, "Lessons Learned from Owning and Operating a Used Bookstore" I think you may find that beneficial as to what my approach was beforehand, what I would have done differently and what I did right. Check it out if you have the time. It's hard to make suggestions without knowing certain details but I think that vide could help you get started. Write back if you'd like - Phil

Nice video! How do you manage inventory in three ways: "I know what books I have." "I know where that particular book is located." Do you organize book with genres, (alpha by author)
@thebookpeddler
@thebookpeddler 3 года назад
Hello Moline, thanks for watching! I organize by genre in the shop, I'm pretty good remembering where most everything is or if I have it in stock. I've been in the process of refining the organization of my online shop making it more compatible with the physical location which has been quite a task but very necessary. Anyhow thanks for watching!

Your thoughts on Hamilton Books and buying from other online sites? I discovered them because I collect movies but their book section can have some amazing prices.
@thebookpeddler
@thebookpeddler 3 года назад
I'm semi familiar with Hamilton Books, I'm more familiar with Bargain Books, I believe they are similar though. I think they're great! You can definitely find good deals through them. There is an outlet here about 40 minutes away called "Ollies" and they'll have over stock and are able to sell some of their books anywhere's from half price to a quarter of the retail price. As a small independent book store it can be hard to keep up with pricing competitively but one thing I do is with my novels I sell at $2 a piece, paperbacks .50 so for the customers coming into the store they're assured basically that they won't find a better deal out there. The rest of my material is priced competitively based on the market but i'm always giving the people coming in and giving me business nice discounts. I appreciate the business and if they're happy, I'm happy and they keep coming back. Thanks for watching!
@ronxxf

@@thebookpeddler There are lots of resellers who buy movies from Hamilton but not sure about booksellers like yourself, they do have $4 flat fee shipping thought. I am curious who are the Overstock distributers that sale to Hamilton/Bargain/Ollies/etc. I would assume you'd have to buy literally tons of books from them. Finally could those guys be bypassed I wonder. Awesome channel, I was supposed to start an EBAY store 8ish yrs ago but like you said you need hard work and discipline. You inspired me to consider starting an EBAY store to sale some of my books and stuff.
@thebookpeddler
@thebookpeddler 3 года назад
@@ronxxf I've looked into it a bit and basically if you have a warehouse to process that amount, the owners purchase "gaylords" of books. They'll be thousands in on a crate basically. It's an assortment of different genres, from my understanding you never really know what it consists of, so kind of a blind buy. There's a company in Brooklyn that I know distributes books like that. Some of your large Amazon sellers buy from distributors like that. Buying quantity like that you'd have to have a solid template and scanning system set up and it's probably more so the large Amazon sellers that have deals worked out with those companies and employees to help process. They are large operations, I'm not overly interested in going that route myself for multiple reasons but anything is do-able. Just gotta get creative, set up deals with thrift stores maybe libraries etc. to try and bypass And in some cases "grease" the right palms that have the access. I'm actually about to get creative with a plan to access more private book collections but once it's put in motion and if it proves to be successful maybe I'll put something out about it. Glad you're enjoying the channel, sorry this message is so long. Good luck if you decide to start selling, it's a lot of work but once you get a flow going it gets better.

Where do you get inventory?
@thebookpeddler
@thebookpeddler Год назад
Most of my inventory at this point comes from house calls. I've become established so at this point it comes to me but generally every year I'll go to a promising estate sale or different events to scour for books
