Cooling the home server closet / home network closet with the AC Infinity Airframe T7. AV Closet

This video is about trying to bring down the temperature of the server / network closet. The closet is currently sitting at 83~84F at the Speed 3 setting and has been performing better than expected. This could probably work well for a audio video closet or audio video cabinet also.

Excellent insights. I have one rack server nas and is needing cooling....looking for ideas. You've given me some insight. Thank you.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with it so far but it’s not summer yet.... on this page I keep a “log” of the average temperature of the room. www.spxlabs.com/blog/2021/1/10/cooling-my-home-server-closet-with-the-ac-infinity-airframe-t7-1 Also most systems report temperatures of about ~43 to 58C. So from network equipment all the way up to my 3700x NAS.

I think what you did will be fine. You're venting into a larger room that opens to the hallway, so your return will pick up the air anyways. One thing you could do in the future is getting another one and pull cooler air into the server closet from the closet they were in, or get an exhaust fan installed in the laundry room which would help the laundry room with the dryer heat anyways along with venting the server hot air.
@SPXLabs

I think it was the best option with everything that had to be taken into consideration. And yes, I still do have a couple more ways to improve it.

Thanks for the video. A couple a quick notes as I have been researching AC Infinity products as I am specking out the build for my AV surround sound custom inset cabinets. I think the white unit may be another option based on your light wall color (just saying). It would probably be less noticeable and the drywall would probably be less noticeable too. You could probably use black electrical tape and just wrap it around the cut-out edge of the drywall. This will probably help to reduce the dust outtake into the second closet. You can use simple cable clips to make the wiring look cleaner. I believe the temp difference you are seeing is the internal cabinet temp vs. the temp where the probe is sitting (I could be wrong on that) and may have missed it. Thanks again and good job.
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 3 года назад
I've had the white in hand and while it definitely wouldn't catch the eye as easily, it's not very sexy like the black version lol, also wife black was the wife approved version so didn't really have much of a choice. The black electrical tape is a great idea and I wouldn't need or buy anything to do it, thanks! I'm pretty sure the temperature difference is because one of the probes is broken. After the video until today I have had the two probes next to each other and have been logging the temperature and both are different. I've inspected the cable of the suspect probe and it appears to be damaged (pinched) which may be throwing the numbers off. Eventually I am going to stop being lazy an run the power cable and probe through the attic. Just have to figure out placement.

@@SPXLabs Can you tell I'm working from home....totally being a bit lazy and distracted! I hear you....first rule Wife approved is the ONLY one that counts! I have actually read that issue with other reviews too regarding the cable/ probe. As I've also heard, AC Infinity is pretty responsive with their Customer Service. Thanks again, be safe and healthy!
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 3 года назад
Oh cool work from home! Yay! Oh the AC infinity one is not damaged, it’s my previous one that is damaged. I need another probe to really set things straight but I don’t want to spend the money on one lol. Also from a physical body temperature perspective the room feels like it’s at a safe temperature. Also the systems report 69C to 76C tops so I’m feeling like it’s safe enough for now

THX! Hubby and I are looking for ideas for our new network closet. Like you, it's getting to hot in there. We have almost the same setup. Tile floors with a fairly large gap under the door, just need something to pull the air up from there and out. We'd probably do the reverse one with the LCD on the outside of the closet. Hoping this is possible b/c out closet is small and no way to hang it horizontal, same as you (studs in the way). We shall see! Thanks again for this.

@@SPXLabs Since you posted this, is it still working well for cooling down below 90 degrees? What speed do you keep it at? You had mentioned that you could hear it at 6 but not so much at 3. With tile floors through our entire house, everything echo's. :)
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 2 года назад
Short answer is yes it still works. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-adxk6DP5md8.html this is a video showing a year later. Here is a link to some charts showing temperatures overtime www.spxlabs.com/blog/2021/1/10/cooling-my-home-server-closet-with-the-ac-infinity-airframe-t7-1 The fans only spin up when the temperature reaches 80F and the unit will set the fan speed appropriately. The fans normally sit at speed 3 and will get up to 6 if needed but it’s extremely rare. I just installed a passive vent on the front of the door literally today because I uh…. Have been adding a bunch of equipment and now the exhaust vent is overwhelmed and now I need to get a better system in place.

That size closet with 200 CFM fan will have about 75 ACH (Air Changes per Hour). Meaning all the air in that room is replaced approximately every 50 seconds. You should be seeing temps very close to the hallway temp. If your not, then space under door is probably not large enough, and the exhaust fan is starving.
@theirongiant2182
@theirongiant2182 2 года назад
Not necessarily. All that equipment is putting out a LOT of heat.

It looks like the vent in the laundry room is angled.You might be able to just turn it 180° to have them point the other way and you won’t see the dry wall maybe?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 3 года назад
Yes! It is angled. I did consider what you suggested but I’m nervous about how that will effect airflow. I don’t even know if it will make any difference. But that is something I could test. Hmmmm
@theirongiant2182
@theirongiant2182 2 года назад
@@SPXLabs - if you build a "tunnel" between the two rooms to seal the gap, you will improve airflow because you won't be venting into the cavity between the walls. And yes, you could install it in the laundry room and 'pull' the air from the server closet... as long as you first build a tunnel to ensure you're not also pulling air from the cavity, which would be a waste.

Great video and very thorough (both this video and your 1 year later video), but I have two questions: - How long is the power cord for the fan? - What is the minimum depth between the fan grates for your drywall install? (I have thinner than normal walls where I am looking to install it and not sure if this is something that is adjustable to accommodate my needs.) Thanks again.
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Год назад
- 6 feet - The depth between the dry wall / sheet rock is 3 1/2 inches deep.
@Aurleis
@Aurleis Год назад
@@SPXLabs Thank you. My drywall in the likely spot I'm going to put it is 3." In your opinion, if I put in on the 3" side and is the design of the fan assembly able to work with the reduced thickness? Or does it basically need that 3 1/2" between grates?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Год назад
I think the depth of the fan housing / chassis is 2.3 inches thick. So it should sit comfortably in that space.

Question 1: Specs say this thing is like 2.5" deep... is your wall thinner than normal, for it to be able to go all the way through? Question 2: When you opened it up, did you get the impressions the fans are reversible? I want to use it to cool a room, and Winter blow in at top of room, Summer blow out. I would switch the fans' direction twice a year...
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 2 года назад
How thick is a normal wall? The airframe does not go all the way through. The back side is inside the framing or in other words is still in between both sides of the sheetrock/dry wall. They are definitely reversible. I'm not an expert but blow cool air down on top of rising hot air doesn't force the hot air out of the room through the bottom of the door. It's always best to exhaust hot warm air from the top of a room and pull cool air up from the bottom of a room.
@theirongiant2182
@theirongiant2182 2 года назад
"You can definitely hear the whine of the fans at speed 3" and this is why I am replacing mine with Noctua fans. BUT... the connectors on the Airframe are JST, while most PC case fans are Molex. You will have to cut off the ends and rewire them. The buffer is in degrees, not percentage.

Seeing pictures on Amazon and watching a quick vid from Cedia and it shows these mounted on the exterior of the closets. Since you mounted it on the inside of the closet isn't it acting more like an intake drawing in air from the laundry room?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 2 года назад
There are two “versions” an intake and exhaust version. I have the intake version, so air is pulled from the server closet and exhausted into the laundry room. If I had the exhaust version the unit would need to be in the laundry room to pull air from the server closet. Kind of weird, I know lol You can read about it more here if it will help. www.spxlabs.com/blog/2021/1/10/cooling-my-home-server-closet-with-the-ac-infinity-airframe-t7-1

3.412 btu per watt. Sensible heat removal is ( cfm × temperature change x 1.08 at sea level) 400 watts is 1364 btu. 1365btu=200x temp change×1.08 do the math and 200 cfm of 6 degree cooler air than the closet should cool it.

Why not just vent into the open wall space, which probably goes into the roof space or into the space between floors if you are in a two-level structure, rather than into another room?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 3 года назад
Single story home. Just an attic above the closet. The space between the walls is very very small and there is wood and insulation at the top between the gap of the two walls of the two rooms. I’d suspect the space between the walls is just too small and would not dissipate heat very well over time.
