I actually own one of these. I bought it in 1989 for $299. I’ve always liked quirky guns, and have quite a few that most people have never seen. Thanks for the video, enjoyable as always.

I was a cop back then, I remember these being sold to cops for backup weapons. I thought it was silly then, too. Instead I got a PPK/S .380, which I carried until just a few years ago when I got a modern 9mm compact pistol.
@festerofest4374
@festerofest4374 7 месяцев назад
Did you have good reliability with yours? I had the same pistol (Interarms) and I could not find a round it would feed reliably. It's one of only two guns I've ever sold. I was in love with it when I got it, but between feeding issues and the snapiness I was not a fan. We are spoiled today with much better compact carry options.
@TStheDeplorable
@TStheDeplorable 7 месяцев назад
@@festerofest4374 It sucked with hollow point ammo. Jacketed round nose was fine. Some guys said they had success with hollow points that were filled with a plastic nub that made it feed like a round nose. Now I have a P365 and absolutely love it!

@@TStheDeplorable Right on. As a carry weapon I insisted on trying to find a hollow point load that would work... so because I couldn't I felt the gun didn't fill its purpose. Yes... I got the 365XL and it's so perfect IMO. I lost 25 lbs and can carry appendix now instead of 4 o'clock lol.

It was also used by Leon in the first 20 minutes of Blade Runner. One also found its way into the remake of Battlestar Galactica as a civilian weapon. Back in the nineties my local gun shop even managed to have one but the trigger pull is the worst I have ever tried on any functioning firearm.

Trigger pull: The revolver I carry normally has a double action.trigger pull of (electronic Wheeler brand measuring device, average of five pulls) 9 pounds, 1 ounce. It shoots well. I have to agree with the speaker. Very well made. Quite sturdy. Of very little use. Interesting history. The COP pistol was 'inspired' by the Mossberg Brownie; which was in turn an updated version of the Sharps four barrel derringer. The Sharps and the Mossberg demonstrated a better sales level. The COP is a collector's item much as is the Gyro Jet. Another great idea that didn't work.

Shot one these last year: 8 rounds of .357 magnum, original skinny metal grip, egged on by my "friend" who admitted later that he only fires 38s through it. I've shot .357 in small revolvers before but the monster trigger in the COP does something to weaken your hand at exactly the wrong moment. I had trouble tying my shoes the next week and, swear to God, it was a couple months before my right hand was full strength. Ridiculous gun but I can actually see it's use as an adrenalin-fuelled Get Off Me piece that can be pocket carried safely without a holster.

There are indeed things from the 1980s I'd like to forget (my first marriage ...) but the hair and the music? No, man, '80s girls were hot in a way we just don't see anymore and the music is STILL the best music ever. Fun fact: That COP derringer was used in the movie Blade Runner. It was the gun Leon (replicant) used to kill the first Blade Runner. IIRC it was rigged to fire two blanks at a time for added flash and effect. It looked tiny in Brion James's huge mits.
@SavageGerbil

For the use, the gun does make sense. 4 shot backup weapon for police that can't be stopped in a struggle, no cylinder or cycle to impede, no getting pushed out of battery. On paper, it's brilliant. In practice, this gun was always the most interesting member of the crap row in pawnshops. Always used to see these in pawnshops, and they were always cuddled up with Lorcin and Llama
@peterhammann2468
@peterhammann2468 5 месяцев назад
Don't quote me on this but I think point shooting used to be a big thing with the police force, so having something that's not really trimmed for high accuracy would make sense. A trigger this heavy also makes for a fairly good safety without actually using a safety, i.e. You could carry it cocked and loaded knowing that even if you got it snagged on something it would be almost impossible for it to go off without you meaning for it to while still enabling you to simply draw and fire quickly. I'm not nesseccarily saying that that's a good philosophy but it may have been a reasonable thought at the time.

The DeLorean was a "cool" car, but they were a piece of crap. That's why they didn't last long in the automotive industry. As for the music in the 80's, the rock and metal was good. 80% of the pop music was absolutely horrific. I grew up in the 80's, so I remember it all too well. 🤣

I had a COP, back in 1983, it was my edc, it was not designed for anything more than getting someone off of you, i.e. muzzle contact with the person trying to do you bodily harm. It is primary a backup, not shooting at anything more than 5 feet away. The COP was recalled due to accidental discharge if dropped and it lands on the breach muzle pointed up. As i have intimate knowledge of this "problem". I came home late Sunday night around midnight, took my COP out of my right hip pocket and placed it on my antique mans dresser, the gun slid off the top of my dresser i didn't attempt to catch it but steped back about a foot, the COP hit the floor muzzle up and discharged a 125gr SuperVel, that hit the lower drawer where it left a 5 inch curved gouge in the face of the drawer, and the jacket sepersted from the lead core, the core went in to the closet to my right, the copper jacket hit me squarley on my left testicle, cut my Levis, did not penetrate and dropped to the floor. It left the nastyest blood blister/bruse you can only imagine on my left testicle, and powder flakes in my face. The next morning a Monday, as soon as my gun shop opened i traded it for a S&W Model 60, we were looking at when i bought the COP. It was recalled a month or so after that eyeopening event. It stayed in the display case for a couple of year, everything but the sales recipe eas with it. I don't remember how much in trade i got for it but i would have given it to them if needed. Oh by the way i did qualify on a standard police cource with it too. I still have the S&W Model 60, and a memory of the COP.

It made a sort of sense in the early 1980's. Most officers carried .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolvers. Having a back-up that fired the same cartridge made sense. There were few high power, ultra compact, semi-autos at the time. Back-up weapons are a 'get off me' weapon. There is nothing of the gun to snag if pulling from a pocket. The trigger can't be blocked . In a fight, if you slide gets pushed back or you jam it against your target, the gun will be out of battery and won't fire. If you opponent grabs the frame of your revolver and keeps the cylinder from turning, the gun won't fire. I was a police officer for 24 years. During training I was able to do both to armed opponents. At 3-7 yards, even keyholing, .357 Magnum, is effective. I have one and have never had a mis-fire or any issues with it. Recoil is a bit stout firing 158gr .357. With departments going top semi-autos and the proliferation of ultra-compact 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45ACPs, this weapon lost its place.

I owned one of these in the early 80s. They were made in Torrance, CA where I lived. My father was a master machinist and was friends with the guys in the machine shop that made these. Was given to me by my father. These guys were aerospace machinists and wanted to make something crazy. Had a rotating firing pin and would misfire a lot. Was well made stainless and weighed a ton. Did not shoot very well. Came in an aluminum blue velvet lined presentation box. I sent a letter into guns & ammo magizine at the time to see what they had to say about this thing. They ended up printing a story and photo about this gun. After the magizine came out I got several phone calls from as far away as South Carolina from collectors wanting to know if I wanted to sell. I actually ended up selling it in 2010 to large dealer in so. Cal for well over a $1000. Kinda wish I would have kept it as a collectors item now. I’ve seen a couple NIB sell at auction for $2500+ Not very many of these were made.

Big thanks to your video. It's short and informative. To be honest, I think if snubnose revolver is okay, this can be okay too. You have somewhat showed that, by literally make a square on the plate. Well, the hit point is further from where you aim so it's a little hard to be accurate but in theory, it can be accurate. 20ft is test seems to be okay. Due to this gun has 4 barrels, grouping of the gun is grouping of 4 barrels, not 1. But somehow, vertical dispersion seems to be a lot tighter than horizontal. The rest of info like trigger weight, big grip and the barrel sometime keyhole the bullet, are all informative

I fired one that a brother of mine owned, when I got off active duty Army. His 'off duty gun'. Monstrously heavy trigger pull. An extremely long trigger pull also. It's relatively easy to shoot with 38 special, but it was a different game when we dropped in some 158 grain 357 magnum rounds. It bucked far worse than my original Charter Arms 44 Bulldog. If I was a Clampett, I would call that derringer a "Disastree"!!!

i had one when they came out. The cases always seemed to expand enough to stick in the chamber and i had to pound them out.

My Dad (Vietnam Vet) always carried this gun in his right pocket every time he left the house. Back in the 80s he was drinking at a Tavern in Chicago and some gangbanger walked up behind him and stabbed him in the side and my dad turned around and drew his Derringer and unloaded it into the guy that stabbed him. I remember my ma getting a call from the police and hospital about what happened and rushed up there to see my Pop.

I never shot one of these, but did have the "pleasure" of shooting the High Standard .22 Magnum 2 shot derringer. I'll bet that that little monster easily had a 20 pound trigger, sometimes I couldn't get it to fire at all. I am a large man with 2XL sized hands and had to stop shooting it after only 10 rounds or so. Do you have one of those to review?
