The .357 magnum is, to me, the pistol caliber equivalent of the .30-'06. It will do everything you can reasonably expect from a handgun, the recoil is manageable for most people, with practice, and it's extremely versatile.
I'd sooner trust a revolver .357 over semiautomatic. I get it, 7 rounds vs 15, but I always qualified perfect with my wheel gun vs my backup piece. I guess I'm just old school.
I have bought, sold, and had access to numerous firearms and calibers. However, the first handgun I ever bought (1976), is still with me and will never be sold or traded. The Ruger Security Six .357 mag. w/4" barrel. Accurate, dependable, and powerful.
When I was a kid my mother carried the speed six in stainless and my step dad carried a security six. Both were grey guns. As a kid that recoil was a bad. As I got older and stronger I adjusted to it. I would love to get the security six as a camp gun
@@GregSr A few years ago, for some unknown reason, I bought a Ruger GP100 Match Champion. It's also "a beast". A little heavier and slightly longer barrel (4.2 in.) Since the Security Six is slightly lighter, I use it as my winter carry pistol and also when I am out deer hunting. The GP100 lives next to my bed for unwanted "visitors" (whether it be four legged or two).
Didn't fluff it out to 18++++ minutes like the other guys either. WE DON'T NEED TO SEE 3 MINUTES OF CAR FOOTAGE DRIVING TO THE RANGE, PLAYING STUPID MUSIC.
Yes and no. Sometimes when I go on RU-vid, I just want to watch something that’s just entertaining (over the top personality included). Other times I’m interested in seeing something technical. If there’s just one without the other, it’s gonna get stale.
My friend was shot in the stomach with a .25acp FMJ it almost killed him .. he fought for his life in ICU finally was able to turn around...he wears a colostomy bag now and the bullet is settled right by his spine..it was too risky to remove it ..for fear of paralysis..
Converted my G23 to .357Sig. I cut my handgun teeth on .357's in the late1970's, so my affinity for the caliber perhaps makes me a bit bias. The .357Sig is an incredible round as well.
I still have and shoot regularly a 1st run Ruger Security 6 my dad bought new when I was 10. It has thousands of rounds through it and has never missed a beat. My home defense load out is 2 plastic cap snake rounds to blind them, 2 .38 and last 2 are 158 grain HP...
@@pray4mojo35 actually full power 10mm would have surpassed the .357 magnum performance wise. The .357 magnum may penetrate a bit further because it is a lighter and faster round, but 10mm will hit with more power and open a larger wound channel due to being a heavier round. Some full power 10mm rounds to my understanding hit near the lower range of the .41 magnum
40 matched the 9mm 10 shots on the 4th round. So did the 357. 40 is best because you can still achieve great capacity without sacrificing adequate power for penetrating widows, doors etc.
Great video! Proves why I CCW a 9mm… plenty enough power to be deadly, but not so much as to shoot through your house and into your neighbors house. The 357 is great, but I have mitigated it to strictly a hunting pistol now.
Love revolvers. Hate the prices. Good video bud. Shows how the little 9mm gets it done cheaply. Would not want to get shot with any of these. My pick? New defense round 2,200 fps 9mm hollow point. Can see on youtube. I take speed over bullet weight for close range any day.
It depends on the shot placement u could take it down with 3 or 4 shots of the regular 9mm if you placed them like the magnum wouldn't get the same reactions but it would still do the job I see that u did haha still great video I loved it now I've gotta take my aea 357 semi auto terminator pcp airgun to a cinderblock
You don't need a pistol designed for stopping a 1,000-grizzly to defend yourself against a human attacker. My .380 and even my .22lr will do just fine. One round to the head and the attacker goes down.
Great video.. I would take 1 round of the 9 and 40.. looks like they were down .. please consider doing another with 9mm (115), 40sw (165) and .357mg (125)
Better yet and make it a fair test and use a 45 ACP or even a 357 SIG and save the 357 MAG for other big bore revolver tests where it would be eaten alive. I like 357 Mag but you guys act the 45 ACP guys and think it's the holy grail of calibers lol
The words Glock and performed very badly do not belong in the same conversation!!!!!! I own several Glocks. But have carried the same Glock 22 Gen 2 for 25 years. Have changed springs and tuned her up twice but would still put my life in her hands.
Makes me feel better, my main is a Rossi 357 revolver. My backup?? Don't laugh, a 22mag deringer. I made the decision based on info given me by an ER surgeon. He said it sometimes took him an hour to remove the 22mag debris, small entry but lots of internal damage. Thanks, maybe next time a S&W 500??
Now imagine if only two bullets made three of those cinder blocks disintegrate?! That's pretty much what we're expected to believe occur on 7/11/2001 at the globe trade mecca in New York 😵💫
Not sure brittle concrete blocks is best comparable because a 22 can do about the same damage. Ballistic gel shows penetration and expansion that each caliber is capable of.
Placement is correct. There are places on a cinder block that are stronger than other areas of the blocks structure. Hitting the block at the very ends and the very center are the stronger spots of a block. In the center of either cavity is the weakest point of the blocks wall. So for a good test the shots need to be fired at the same location for at least the first shot to get an accurate example of comparative power. I think this video shows that well. He also shoots well.
He shot the first two and the fourth shot in the same exact spot though for 9mm, lol, and the third one was low. For the .40 he shot in different spots for the first 2, and high on the third one, and then where the effect would be greatest on the 4th one. Honestly subtract 2 shots minimum for 9mm because the 2nd and 4th shot went right into the exact same hole as the first one.
I just appreciate the gentleman’s manners. I also enjoyed watching him shoot! Any of these rounds would mess with someone’s day, for sure. I knew there was a reason I always liked my Model 66 S&W .357.
I own many revolvers, and many semi auto pistols. I, personally, prefer a revolver ONLY as an offensive situation, hunting round for big or dangerous game. The 357 is a great all around caliber. I own a 357, which I have used in taking multiple javelina. For bigger game, I use a 454 casull,...not because it's a big "Macho" gun, but because I actually shoot it very accurately. Now when talking defense, or a "save your butt" round,.... human or animal,.... the one that I would trust my life to, is my glock 22 40 cal. I know some are laughing thier asses off right now. Why would I choose a round that has less than 1/3 the power of my 454. Simple answer, VOLUME. Why make one hole when you can make 8? Why inflict injury on one area , when you can inflict injury on many areas? Short of an elephant , or the" boss" of a Cape buffalo, what skull will a 40 cal not penetrate? In an emergency situation,....in 3 seconds I can put 8 to 10 rounds down range, (with more at the ready,)....rather than one, maybe two from a revolver. Also the ability for "autos" to quickly reload is a major plus in a less than favorable black bear or hog situation . Some people have a stigma that semi autos are only to be used as a defense weapon for a human attacker. A threat is a threat, right? What about penetration "? A 40 cal will go through a black bears head with no problem. The penetration of a 40 cal, especially the FMJ is very impressive in tests that have been conducted. The hollow points, like the one from hornady, make a killer permanent cavity. Now for the big bears...grizzly and polar, different story, ....a 12ga with slug/ buck /slug/ buck/ slug, would be my choice,.....but for ANYTHING else , I'll take my 40 aII day long. Anyways, just thought that I'd throw that out there, either for conversation, or for those that think I'm full of beans ,.......a good laugh. 😁👍
@@teabaggervance8 if he's full o beans I am too and I'd say their pretty smart beans cause everything he said makes sense to me. I have offensive calibers and defensive calibers with 40 SW being the one I almost always choose.
The absolutely best semi auto handgun round ever is....10mm. .40 is admittedly 10mm short by EVERYONE in the practical shooting community. In the revolver category, for controllability, ease of training, and versatility, .357 wins. .44 magnum takes the cake as a professional grade caliber. The .40 was pushed on us as a more user friendly alternative because of the rush to more inclusive personnel requirements( girls and more law careerists vs good guy shooters). After all, today's beat cop is tomorrow's Chief of Police. But not if they can't qualify.
Really good shooting, nice example of shot placement and impact of different rounds , cool how each round progressively took less in accordance with known ballistic performance
excellent test. I feel you could have stopped at 9 rounds with the 9 and 6 with the 40, since number six you missed the wing on the block with the 40. So 9 rnds, 6 rnds and 5 rnds. Kinda makes sense when you look at power levels. The 357 is king. But the 40 is a nice compromise between the 9 and the 357. Would be cool to see where the 45 stacks up with it's big heavy bullets
40 might actually perform better than the 45. It has less mass but travels faster. Its delivers just as much if not more energy to the target. 40 S&W is basically a 10mm short.
If you compare equal barrel lengths the .357 barely exceeds the 40 S&W. Most 357 data is for an 8 and 5/8 inch barrel and almost all 40 data is for a 4 inch barrel. BIG DIFFERENCE! Most 357 shooters know very little about balistics.
@@larrytischler570 I beg to differ! I've been hand loading for over 40 years. You are correct in stating that barrell length makes a difference, but there are a multitude of factors involved in designing the best load. Additionally the type of firearm used in the test is also critical. I am a fanatic when it comes to being precise about my loading. I have my favorite loads, but I never share that information because I would not want some trying to load the same ammunition and leaving a step out. I could continue writing but...let's just say it is a very complicated equation. Yes I'm what you call an expert.
That first hole from the 357 was ungodly. That was “instant” neutralization of a threat. Only thing is being able to aim and accurately place on target/threat under duress/stress/adrenaline
It's not as bad as you may think. 110-125 gr. IS easy to manage with proper techniques. Make no mistake, they are f'n loud. They can deafen by the 4-5th rd, without plugs. I love 'em.
For what? We have vids of a .357 shooting in a closed room where the muzzle blast burst the eardrums of the shooter. Get real. The 40 S&W is a far superior round for a gunfight where you have to come up on armed attackers and walk away. The shot victims complained of the extreme pain they were in if they lived through the 90+ % one shot kills. And they never needed double tap until 9mm became the standard. And my forty holds more than twice the rounds of 357. And reloads faster unless you are Jerry Michulek. And please don't forget, the 165 grain 40 has the best wound channel of the other big two including the 45acp. If I need to shoot at longer ranges I will use my 10mm auto revolver.
357 hands down best hand gun round however it's not practical in all scenarios great for large game side arm and downing a single assailant but in a multi attacker the recoil time to effectively aim I'll go with a 9mm all day there's all kinds of thing to say about rounds and guns but you can't argue 3 things 357 best hand gun load ever 308 best rifle load and the Beretta 92 is still relevant in design best semi hand gun ever designed not the most ergonomic or weight conscious but design wise still relevant
@@jacktheshark7440 Short, humble and efficient. I like it. Ps : I'm french and here we have the GIGN (think SEALS, SAS, DELTA...). They have create this team in 1974. They chose Manurhin revolvers in 357. In an hostage situation, their philosophy was : one shot fired in the shoulder, the bad guy is down but alive and can be put in jail. Now with terrorism of course they use Glocks or Sigs but they still have the 357 for backup.
Amigos...
@AL yes it is.. and if you conceal you will not find anything concealable with the power of the 9mm .. unless you carry a bag pack with a mini uzzi or a Draco ... I’m stuck with 9mm I don’t see the benefit of the 40 and higher besides they don’t make concealable compact firearms in any other caliber as they do on the 9mm.. remember also the key is to practice practice practice on whatever caliber you will carry or use as your defense...
@AL 9mm is an effective round for self defense. Getting shot by anything is pretty demoralizing and that’s if they live after being shot. Shoot to stop the threat, not to kill.
@@darrenbishop4327 I don't know, many people have lived after being shot with 9mm. Personally I prefer throwing bigger rocks than throwing pebbles. LOL
Nice shooting I said to myself I hope he stays consistent. I like a 9 mm because it holds so many rounds but I've been shooting 357's all my life and you just can't beat the reliability when you need it
I guess I'll need a new .357 magnum revolver. You never know when an angry concrete block is going to attack you, and you need protection to match the threat. Thanks for sharing.
Very impressed by all but as I thought, the 357 annihilated within three rounds. Where as the 9mm and 40sw took 5-6 rounds to do the same damage. By shot three on 357, the concrete was almost leveled. Ton of power.
I love the vid, sure made a mess of those blocks. As to which is best, ? All of them will put the hurt on anything that is troubling you...Man or beast !
I would have went with .45 1911 in place of the .40 s&w and a .44 mag in place of the .357 … and only 3 rounds per weapon . Try it some time , you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Every round has it's benefits, more capacity without losing lethal power with the 9mm, more power and less capacity for the .40, then even more power and even less capacity with the .357 so each has it's tradeoff. Even a .22 can kill but i think anything at .38 and above are viable killers. So take what you can handle.
The 40 s&w can have 15 rounds in a magazine which are well enough, the 9mm with 17 rounds in a magazine is not needed, considering that 40 s&w is 30% more powerful than 9mm the 40 s&w is better in everything than 9mm
@@Maverick966 My Canik holds 20(+1). It being my first pistol and primarily for defense, I wanted higher capacity, because an intruder is getting more than 1 trigger pull anyways.
@@Maverick966 Bad guys aren't stopped by kinetic energy. They are stopped by tissue damage and blood loss. The FBI switched back to 9mm because after doing extensive testing with dozens of different types of HP ammo they discovered many different things. One of them was that 9mm on average produced 40% to 60% more total volume of tissue damage than both 40sw or 45 acp. There's a good 2 part video series on youtube that goes over the many reasons the FBI gave. The 2nd video goes more into detail about the actual testing results. The 1st video goes over just the summary. Watching both parts is best. The videos are titled " The FBI Returning to 9mm Ammo " and it was done by the Dynamic Prepper youtube channel
@@Prepare2Survive Not true, 40 S&W causes twice the tissue damage, twice the size of the hole with hollow point than 9mm, there is no way a 9mm can cause more damage
People need to factor in just how fast a .357 is traveling. In a self defense situation, anyone behind your target is potentially at risk of danger. At least with a 40 or 45. That slug is thumping, and staying inside your perp.
Remember folks, current .357 mag is loaded about 200fps slower than the .357’s of thirty years ago. This was done when manufacturers began chambering small J-frame sized pistols in .357. Frames couldn’t take it, so the loadings were quietly reduced behind the scenes. Gotta get custom ammo to get those old 1500fps velocities.
The best gun I have ever shot to date for me is the S&W 686 6-inch barrel using .357 loads. The recoil was minimal even compared to my .40 Springfield XD 9102. I bought the XD instead because of the ammo capacity. I don't regret it because after shooting several Glocks in various calibers, My XD chambered in .40 was still more manageable for me even compared to a 9mm Glock. My cousin tested my XD against his 9mm and said that it barely had any noticeable recoil compared to his gun. As they say, shoot the highest caliber that you can control. Still, I'd rather have a 646 or Colt Python for conceal carry.
Ok so the .357, gets the job done with 3-4 rounds. The .40 gets er done good with 5-6. But the .357 holds only 7 rounds, but most hold 5-6. But my Glock 23, Gen 4, .40 cal. holds 13+1! With the Hornady Critical Defense hollow point red dot 🔴 rounds that cinderblock would be gone in three hits!
@@jackhammer0101 then you should go buy one (while you still can) You ever wonder why cops have to shoot some asshole 27 times? One round from my .357 anywhere in your torso and your ass is going down, no matter how high you are. I'm not saying that my S&W is a better gun, I'm saying it's the best gun for my needs.
