"On Wednesday, 22-year-old Darrien Hunt was shot dead by police in Saratoga Springs, Utah, about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.
For three days, police said nothing about the cause of the shooting while witnesses reported that he was running away as officers shot outside a Panda Express. On Saturday, police issued a brief statement saying he lunged at them with a sword. But Hunt’s lawyer says an independent autopsy shows Hunt was shot in the back and not in the front, and his mother Susan Hunt says the “sword” was a blunt-edged vanity version of a Japanese “Katana” sword he bought at an Asian gift shop.
“Those stupid cops thought they had to murder over a toy,” Susan Hunt told the Associated Press. The family’s lawyer, Randall K. Edwards, declined requests from the Los Angeles Times to provide the name of pathologist who performed the alleged autopsy, or to provide a copy of the autopsy.” *

nerds need to organize; could be any kind of group; but any group large enough can fight for its members; sue the cops, hold meetings to revolve conflicts. boycott certain producers, lobby for consumer protection etc. hell meet with cops to educate them on cosplay.

Because they don't give out permits for swords, and even if they did he did not have a permit for it. Not enough people use swords anymore for them to give out permits for it. Perhaps that is something you can try to protest for if you care so much about it.

Hold On NRA has not that much to do with it, they don't dominate city or county firearm laws and barely dominate state gun laws. The fact is that they tend to be more severe against things like swords since they are used less likely and are more likely to be used for bad since it is an odd weapon.

so i'd just like to point out that Utah is an open carry state. what that means is that if you have a weapon on you, you don't have to conceal it. you can carry it when it's clearly visible and cops can't say shit to you. the fact that cops approached Darrien, then killed him is a clear violation of this. I'm a University of Utah student, and I've seen kids ON CAMPUS with like 6 inch pocket knives on their belts and no one has even looked at them twice. but because Darrien was black, he was already a suspect.

ah right those katana's, i actually own one myself, bought it at a giftshop in florida, dull as a damn spoon, i suppose if you were really determined you could run someone through with it or beat the shit out of them but it's certainly not meant as a weapon. Now i suppose it's possible to sharpen one of them yourself but i doubt this kid knew how to do it, had access to the necessary tools, or knew anyone else who could do it. furthermore i doubt he had any desire too. Now they do sell proper katanas in japan which are actually sharp and designed to work as originally intended but they cost a fortune. seriously, this kid was just playing around with his cool fake sword outside, he was by no means a threat. either this cop was just looking to shoot someone, was extremely jumpy and shot this kid 6 times in the back (how exactly do you get shot in the back if your lunging at someone with a sword?), or...well actually i can't think of another possibility. how the hell could he have been attacking the cop if he got shot in the back. that would indicate he was running away or even more disturbingly, caught off guard.

But their defenders will cite the police were only following procedure which allows them the authority to take down anyone they see as a constituting a deadly threat. Compassion, common sense, decency go out the window when we have a legal system blindly following such procedures.

The problem with these stories is that it makes it seem like there is rampant racism throughout the Police forces in general, and the truth is, there probably is. However, these incidents are extremely minor in comparison to the good work the Police do around the States every single day. Yes, these guys need to be held accountable, and I think if the Justice was swift and decisive for these idiots people wouldn't be so negative about the Force in General. Also, Police CANNOT investigate themselves, that is ridiculous, you need an outside Agency that is not involved with Policing to do the Investigating.

Minor in comparison you say really!!?? That is like saying who cares that Washington and Jefferson owned people as slaves in forced servitude that they occasionally raped and sold like commodities this is minor in comparison as they were founding fathers. In reality cops do more harm than good as they are nothing more than a gang of thugs who endanger not protect the public. Remember that incident a while back when multiple police forces were looking for that ex cop turned cop killer. During the hunt the police were involved in MULTIPLE incidents of opening fire on civilians the police arbitrary thought was the guy hunting cop. In this situation since the cops were being hunted they did not give a fuck about the public, they were protecting their own asses by endangering the public. How about the other recent incident when 3 bank robbers took a hostage as a shield so the police just LITERALLY opened fire on the suspects killing not only two of the bank robbers but the hostage also. The police response to this was LITERALLY them saying well the robbers started it.

This is why the Black Panthers wanted to be able to police their own neighborhoods and protect against police brutality, but they were shut down because of it. Now he was outside of a black community, but at least in our own communities the police are supposed to match the demographics, meaning there should not be an all white police force patrolling black and Hispanic neighborhoods. Check all the other examples if he doesnt resist he get chocked, if he stops and puts his hands up he get shot, if he run he gets shots... But if he is white, he can waive a gun for 2 hours towards kids and cops and nothing happens.

Sydney Sakura You can read up that whites are twice as likely to be beaten up or killed by the police, but then you also gotta figure in who plays the minority. You can also find many videos as to why black people play the victim game aswell.

The study found that both groups are equally likely to be actually killed by the police, but the use of excessive force is clearly happening more often to Black and Brown individuals across the board. I was the friend of a friend of this guy. Darien was obviously high as balls when this happened and shouldn't have gotten into this situation, but I've seen plenty of racial prejudice from the police of Utah. I never actually met the guy, but all if his friends say he was a great guy. It's hard to believe he's now gone because of the hate and fear from these cops.

My dad was going to be a cop once. He told me that in training they tell you that you have to shoot to kill, because it is a pain for them to pay for a man with injuries.
