With guest Stefan Huddleston we discuss the depiction of law enforcement in the media. From Dirty Harry and Bullitt to Law and Order and CSI, the police are typically portrayed as having the people's best interests in mind even when they're breaking the law themselves.

The film industry and military also does this to shape our view of war. The military has a liaison office in Hollywood just for this purpose.

Big time fan of the podcast, esp the Myth is America series! Partially thru, Copaganda is briefly spotlighted by a John Oliver segment on the “Law & Order” series. Great topic and even better discussion!

One bit of good news I’ve seen, though I may be wrong, is a trend in the opposite direction in the video game industry. While copaganda may be popular on tv, in a lot of video games the hero is the rebel outlaw and the villains are the heavily militarized cops who are obviously, in fact, fascist thugs.

Great episode! That cigarette flipping actually convicts people in a court really shocked me. Walter Lippmann already said in 1922 that the motion picture in any form, i.e. TV shows or movies, is the most effective way to shape public opinion. The CIA must have read his book, considering that they are heavily involved in reading scripts, writing scripts, and generally manufacturing all of Hollywood. Maybe a follow-up episode with Matthew Alford and Stefan together?

About everytime we see a cop in a movie, we know he is the good guy - and if he's not, then there is another good cop to bring him down. So whenever we see a movie with cops, we associate cops=good. So far, so obvious. Another at least as widely spread phenomenon which especially Americans very hardly deny: About everytime we see a russian in a movie, we know he is the bad guy - and if SHE (yes she, always she) is not, then there is another evil russian from whom she needs to be saved. So whenever we see a russian on screen - in fiction as well as in news - we associate russians=evil. Every since the invention of movies, can you name more then 3 movies where russians appear but none of them is the bad guy?
