no need to go body repair whacko on this one, fix the lower door and cut in a grey or darker red color and add a tape stripe leaving the orig color .good score and LEAVE the spark plugs ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2005 brochure .......................... www.auto-brochures.com/makes/Ford/F-150/Ford_US%20F-150_2005.pdf
Bought my first copart vehicle last Thursday. 1998 chevy 1500. Followed all your steps to inspecting it and got lucky. Drove it home 45 mins with no issues at all. Thanks for the videos and all the advice. 💪
The wires and relay in the bag in the glovebox is for the tow hitch wiring. That's a good sign the previous owners have never used the truck for towing.
I have a 2007 Ford Expedition with the 5.4, We have had it for 160k now, not really ever had any issues with it. We did replace the Phasers around 150k just cuz we did the timing chains. I know people knock that motor but we have had good luck with it.
My dad has a 2wd 06 F-150 with 150k on the 5.4 motor that came with it and it’s been pretty reliable in the 6 years he’s owned it. Other than the spark plugs, which you might want to check, he hasn’t had any other issues that weren’t related to typical wear and tear. These can be reliable trucks if they’re properly maintained, which most people don’t take into consideration.
Yay! Good job getting the F150 over that other pos! A bit of advice from a mechanic, never let your gas tank get below 1/4 tank. Your fuel pump needs to stay submerged in fuel to keep it cool, otherwise it will eventually burn up. I’ve replaced many fuel pumps due to people continually running below 1/4 tank. Congrats on again on the F150! And happy new year 🎈🎊🎆
Happy new year. I also have a 2005 F150 4x4 lariat. The original cam phasers last around 100k, and the revised OEM ones last around 150k. It's all a matter of how recently the phasers were done. Oil must be changed every 5k. Dorman has a hinge for the gas tank door. It's not going to beat the F250 for towing.
Great buy Randy, Wishing you another great year. Living in your type of neighborhood your neighbors must love you with all those cars in the street.. 😂 Enjoy and be safe.
That was definitely a good purchase just sold my 2004 that has 265k miles on it for $6500 with a rebuilt title sold it the first week trucks are high in demand right now
Randy you are a very lucky guy. Buying a 54 Triton 3 valve engine that was built on a Tuesday morning right after the assembly workers received their $30 raise..... LOL HAPPY NEW YEAR'S to you and your family.
randy, i hope you have better luck with your 5.4. i have a 2005 f-150. i bought it in 2014 with 89k miles and i started having issues less than 2 weeks after i bought it. i’ve fixed the EXACT same coil packs 6 different times. she misses to this day.
In the early 2000s my employer provided us with Ford trucks with the 5.4. We would drive them until they were well over 100K miles. then he would sell them at auction and provide new 5.4 pickups. They all ran well and I never heard of any having problems with the spark plugs popping out. From my experience the 5.4 is a solid engine
You lucked out. The headlights usually are very cloudy looking. Common issue with these trucks. Those lights look new. Another common issue is the control module for the fuel pump. It's mounted to the cross member above where the spare tire is mounted under the bed. They corrode and moisture gets in them. If it ever has a hard time starting or just won't start. That's most likely the issue besides a fuel filter
Thanks uberman!!! I've enjoyed watching you over the last few years. Take the decade by the horns. We miss Tim. Hopefully he's great and has a blessed 🙏 New year along with you.
The bagged wiring harness is for towing a trailer. It's a good sign that it was still in the bag. That means that the engine was never put under a lot of pressure. It didnt pull much behind the truck.
On the 500SL check the fuel system first check the Schrader Valve at the fuel pressure regulator and see if it sprays fuel when you press in with a flathead screwdriver or if it dribbles. If it was a timing gear that was missing teeth or off a tooth wouldn’t start and run when cold.
That wiring in the glove box is so you can hook up a trailer brake controller, so you can plug one in to go through the 7 pin using the stock harnesses instead of having to splice one in yourself.
I understand why you buy car's and trucks because I have same trouble with flashlights my tell me I don't need anymore flashlights but I still buy them. Good deal on the truck.
I think you got a good score there!! I have a 2008 F150 same gen & same engine with no issues. I watch all ur videos, keep up the great work. Happy New Year Randy.... & good luck w ur Copart adventures in 2020
That’s a very nice truck, Randy. I’m glad you went for the buy it now on it, I think you still got a great deal on it. The truck runs so nice it’s probably worth trying to find the two driver’s side doors in the same color and a good driver’s seat at a salvage yard. Great score on this one! Congrats!
BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE 5.4!!! I just recently purchased a 2010 f 150 5.4 Triton. Nothing was wrong just had safetied done. Picked it up and it stalled out from me just backing up 3 feet and locked me out for 30 minutes. Got it started and home, went to turn down my road and it cut out again and i almost hit a telephone pole. The engine light was on for a right side solenoid timing. It was fixed by my local garage and is still throwing the same code and now I have been told to just buy a new engine as its not really worth fixing the 122k km engine.
Randy: sort the Mercedes out. Throw on a door. For$350 that’s cheap Sometimes you have to spend your way out of a problem. Paint BMW. Cheap Macco paint job. Just make the decision and “ get er done”! Don’t let paperwork side track you. You still need to make money and pay your bills Cheers
*my only reason for not liking this truck is that my God son had 2 of them in 3 years one that only had 139,000 on it and one that had 180,00 that had already been completely rebuilt because of the cam phasers. and both of them died on him in short order soon after he got them. the last one was rebuilt by FORD too his buddy had the local dealership rebuild it he thought he got a killer deal on it because he bought it super cheap from his buddy, Turned out his buddy unknowingly screwed him over big time. THAT is NOT a work truck, that is maybe a short trip errand truck. a "WORK TRUCK" is what you got screwed out of by that weasel Superior flips* !
WD-40 your door latches! The light switch, which switches the interior and exterior lights on and off is stuck, and it's causing them to stay on. Had that happen to my little Ranger! Dang, that F-150 was definitely a steal for $1,500! Don't listen to anyone who talks bad about those engines, I know someone with a 2000 F-150 with the 5.4, and has almost 700,000 miles on it with original engine and transmission! The're great trucks man!
What a way to start the New Year! I think you did great on the F-150. I wish the Copart near me had trucks like that. Can't wait to see the other 2 buys. And it looks like it may be time for a Monkey Wrench collaboration on the Mercedes! New Years of to a GREAT start, keep up the great work Randy.
The 5.4 is a great engine, cam phasers fail because of lack of maintenance. If I were you I would change the spark plugs asap in case it has those notorious 2 piece design ones in there. Other than that they are awesome engines.
Thats a great truck for that price. Definitely make it a good work truck. Just do basic maintenance and dont worry about the cosmetics unless you can find a clean already red parts for cheap at the junkyards/facebook
fix the door and do minor bod work on it, paint the lower part of side of truck darker red or grey and use a tape stripe to hide the seam ....... 2004 brochure .................. issuu.com/autokiosk/docs/2004-ford-f-150-brochure-usa
Hopefully the truck doesn't have the factory plugs in it. That was the only pain in the butt when I got my 05 fx4 5.4. 6 out of 8 broke and got stuck. Very time consuming.
change the oil on them regularly...ie more than usual and you minimize the risk of oil sludge stuffing the motors up, plus the latter ones have the uprated timing phasers made from metal
I don't really know if these trucks are problematic or not, but you don't keep them for a long time, so, as long as it drives decent, you had a good deal. Nexen tyres are great and fairly priced, I'm using them since 2016. Happy new Year!
Looked like the plug/wires in the glove box was for a electric brake controller. Splice wires from controller to those wires then plug in to truck harness under dash and your good to go with electric trailer brakes.
Fer Delance ford made an updated version of them however, to let you know you will have to retimed the engine as you are taking apart the timing chain.
My dad had a 2005 f150 4x4 with 5.4 3 valve, he drove it about 2 years before valve failure end up paying close $7,000 engine/labor. I stay away from them. 2 valve engines are way much better.
