Thanks to this video I was able to determine that the floating seal is where my noise was coming from during testing.

Interesting. The discharge gas is used in many internal operations inside of a refrigeration system. In a chiller system, hot gas bypass to keep the barrel from freezing. In a heat pump, the reversing valve is operated by the diff. between hot gas and suction pressure. It makes sense that a scroll comp uses it for it's internal protection. Great video as always Mr. Dallas!

Hey John! Thanks! The compressor came out of a 2009 R-22 Amana heatpump that was getting upgraded to a 5ton unit so the customer said just scrap it out.The compressor is very clean!

Nice video. You did forget one. On the case of the compressor to the left of the electrics there is a dimple. That will blow off when the pressures get way to high and super hot. I came across 4 compressors where they blew and there will be oil all over the roof. And it is 130°f on the roof. Naturally you loose all refrigerant too. What caused that is the condenser was packed with dirt. Sometimes you can weld over the hole. Other times the compressor is toast. This was very common in York 2 stage units. Because people would clean the front coil and never the back coil. You need to clean both.

i have 5 ton daikin dx type unit,while im reset the circuit breaker the unit will start and after 5 mins the outdoor unit was tripp and even the low and high pressure switch was direct its the same problem tipped again,..what is the best solution...i think the internal protector was weak and easy to open thats why always tripped after 5 mins of working...

interesting. thanks for the info I didn't know scrolls has protection from going into a vacuum, id assume its luck that they don't get destroyed running like that for a while lol

Do you suppose one of these could be used to compress air for inflating tires or tool use? Maybe the scrolls are steel and they would corrode? Love your opinion. Thanks

wouldnt it be better to have a thermal switch located in the port in the side of the scroll assembly or even better when the disk opens a push rod would actuate a switch to stop the compressor? since they do make single phase scroll compressors it is possible that there is a overload protector externally 3phase compressors would have to have the protection internally since disconnecting one of the 3 wires would single phase it causing problems.

I am suspecting that when you charge a copeland scroll with liquid through high side while under vacuum causes internal damage with the result being equalized pressure while running....If so why?
@SuperWingman69
@SuperWingman69 4 года назад
Great video. Really helped clarify the protective features of the scroll compressor. The only aspect I still need a better understanding of is..... Does the thermal overload device incorporated in the motor winding auto reset at a predetermined temperature drop? Thank you.
@dizziedallas
@dizziedallas 4 года назад
Superwingman69 Yes the overload automatically resets at a predetermined temperature.

What about the 5 tons compressor of that same brand the 3 terminal cant read resistance on the compressor due o gas leak is there possible to running again?when we check the resistance of the terminal the compressor is hot,is there any solution to work it again?
@ronanandasan4030
@ronanandasan4030 8 лет назад
lack of oil of the compressor, wait until cool the compressor and test with ohms, if same no reading it means your csr terminal was open and replace compressor

Would a floating seal malfunction give equal readings on high and low side?

Hey Dallas so I guess that is what you hear if the condenser fan stops and you hear a hissing sound.

I had a customer that ni thought i did that to. So I yanked that sucker and put in a new compressor. Pulled a mean vacuum made sure it was all proper. Energized it and it did the same exact thing! I was like wtf is going on. I almost wonder if that piece that finishes the seal was stuck and I some how mimicked the same exact defect.
