I’m 60 years old. I’ve decided that my bucket list includes building a beautiful shed with a gorgeous slate roof. My grandfather and father were slaters. I think only learned a little from them.

Beautiful! I love the amazing look of copper & slate, even on new houses. I've said it before, but you saved me so much money and heartache when it came time to replace my 110 you old Pennsylvania slate roof. I was overwhelmed with the idea of replacing a whole slate roof and the thought of how much it would cost. With the help of your videos and products me and a roofer friend who'd never done a slate roof before replaced it and even put some cool designs in that it didn't have before. Not only did it save the historical integrity of the home, but the next owners won't ever have to worry about replacing the roof and my friend learned a new skill for his resume! You're truly an unheralded national treasure, Joe.

Wow! That roof looks amazing. Thank you for sharing all these techniques over the years and supplying me with the materials I have needed for slate work. I will be back for more copper hooks and S.S. roofing nails when I do my next repair. I also love the ladder hook I purchased too. Has saved me in many instances.

That's a brilliant idea fellas it's very difficult to cut a perfect mitre with heavy slates but that solution looks very well too and the discharge from the copper will help prevent moss growth.

Wow I love that look what a nice finishing touch! I always wondered how (regular) mitered hips kept the water out… It boggles my mind how they are watertight. I have never seen step flashing like that that is beautiful! Keep the tradition alive Joe!
@onetwothree4148
@onetwothree4148 Год назад
If you were doing an exposed miter hip you'd put the flashing under the joint. Same idea as this, but it's hidden under the shingle and you don't need any bends other than the hip angle

Beautiful work! On average how long does it take to make 1 of those copper hip caps?

My concern was the nail hole at the top of the ridge cap and how many times your not able to find something to security nail it.

I like the idea of the copper mitred hip flashing,also they could be made to suit varying thicknesses of slate and also possibly made from different material(s) ie: tin/zinc etc similar to the velux flashings,including powder coated grey/black to suit,heck I'd patent that idea 😁😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Every roof would have different angles on the bends

what if you use the sheet copper under the hip slates,bridging both sides, like a " soaker " so that you would not have to do all that work, purely from a practical point of view, unless the customer wants to make a show piece of it. just an observation, thanks. I am in the UK.

How can it be accurate when all slate are not the same thickness . 🤔
@jcjenkins01
@jcjenkins01 2 года назад
In the US and Canada the slates are all made the same thickness. We do not mix thicknesses in a batch. They're incredibly uniform and don't need to be sorted.

@@jcjenkins01 beg to differ. I did 100 square of slate on a church. About 15sq from vermont slate i could use as pavers in my yard. And the other slate roofs over 35vyears of roofimg
@jcjenkins01
@jcjenkins01 2 года назад
@@eamonaugustine1262 Yes, graduated roofs are made of varying thicknesses. Most USA roofs are standard thickness, not graduated, and are uniform enough that they don't need to be graded.
