I heard of it Copper sulphate in a swimming pool to control algea. Not much information on it. Check out my pool. it is crystal clear and all I did was add some root killer I bought at Lowes. its about 8 bucks. i have spent hundreds of dollars on pool chemicals and this stuff works. I bought test stripes to test the ppm of copper. its below 1 ppm a 1/4 cup to a half cup in my 30000 gallon pool. I have used very little chlorine. You have to get your PH and Alkylinity right. I have one of the floating chlorinators but I get a 0 reading on chlorine in my water. I also have read that chlorine causes cancer. I dont think the pool chemical companies want us to know about putting copper in our swimming pool. I also think that copper is a by product of the salt water pool ionizers.. My theory is that that is one of the things salt water systems do is add copper to the water. I have not had an algea bloom all year. I have had yellow and green algea every year. I have bought algea killers floc water clearifier and everything else you can imagine. This stuff works. its kind of a pool hack.

Just a side note... when I unknowingly let my heated pool's alkalinity get out of balance... it began eroding the copper coils in the heater... depositing copper salts into the water... causing the pain of my arthritis to diminish... !!!:)

Lol I think those pains will come back when the heater breaks down from corrosion and pin holes and you find out the cost of a new one.........lol

Tlcsmith. Yes root killer is pure copper sulphate. That stuff your buying is 10 $ of bs added to it The copper is the active ingredient. Important note... copper s is Blue. It will stain plastic etc if it goes full stregth on something. You can desolve it in water first then put it i n as a liquid. The root killer version looks like blue rocksalt. Tractor supply sells it diluted in water 17 $ a gallon for pouring into ponds.

The root killer at Home Depot, etc, is copper sulphate penta hydrate. By weight, it is about 25% copper. The physical form is tiny blue crystals. To get the 0.5 PPM use the ratio of 1 lb (i.e. 16 oz) to 60,000 gallons pool water. Here is a formula you can use: Ounces of root killer to add = (pool volume in gallons) X 16 oz / 60,000 gallons where / is a division sign.

For years I've used the $27 box store bottles. Just can't bring myself to use the crystals, even though they both say Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate. I'm just afraid there's some buffers in the $27 bottles that prevent staining or worse...reactions with us. On average I probably add a bottle every 3 years so it's not too expensive. Guess that's the price to pay for more peace of mind, although my suspicions are it's all the same.

vinyltap nope...they just add a gallon of water to 2 table spoons of crystal and sell it to you at a $26 profit.

Would it be good to combine copper sulphate , epsom salts , baking soda and hydrogen peroxide in a swimming pool . ..... ? For a healthy / safe way to keep a pool clean ?

Are you sure it's safe to swim in? Regular copper based algae use is only 7% copper. This stuff is 99%. I'm trying copper ionization using a DIY setup powered by a solar battery charger. Just started testing it so dont know what the concentration is. I believe 1 ppm is the max you should go if not .5

I also read that if you have bleech blond hair you need to wash your hair in a low ph shampoo or make sure to wash hair after swimming bc the copper might turn your hair green. .. I never had any issues but its something I read.

We did this same thing. Wow! Temporarily solved the problem but has now created a whole new problem. Black copper staining all over our once beautiful pool. It’s cost an arm and leg to try to find ways to rid this from the walls and flooring of the pool. Tons of Citric acid, CUlators, and blue stuff products.

Thanks, im over in spain, ive just added a pound, 500grams, of copper sulphate to the pool, its 10 x 4 metres, so 33 x 13 feet. 60, 000 litres, so 13, 000 gallons. Is this the correct amount, do i need to add more during the summer ??

Sounds like way too much! Another commenter said they added 8 teaspoons in a 15,000 gallon pool and that worked for them. Too much is unhealthy. Get test strips and make sure your levels are at .5-1ppm. Not more.

Bobby Grant Home Depot has it as root killer. $13 / 2 pound bottle. Read the label to confirm. It should appear as blue granular crystals.

OK, my pool is off wack. With today's stabilizer, shock and ph+ additions I should be in the green area with everything. My back yard is a freaking jungle and after every rain the pool turns from crystal clear water to swamp over night. I have auto chlorinating and I test it on a regular schedule but it still goes out of wack. I was told about this Copper sulfate. I literally went to the store and bought what you guys said: Root Killer by ZEP its 99% copper sulfate. However its in crystal form, what do I do? Do I disolve it in water then add to the pool or to I just add the 8-16 tbsp of it to my pool directly? Can you guys please elaborate

rrbigdan1 I have seen jugs of 10 teaspoons of C.S. mixed in water for sale for $20 bucks. so Yes you can mix the crystal in water and let it desolve. or I put it in my skimmer. the Crystals will stain white plastic blue so it's good to desolve in water, or if you don't care you can put it in your skimmer basket, or pull the basket out and put them into your intake pipe. I liked doing that bc it put out a blue cloud out the jets. you will be amazed. P.S. remember it's toxic in high concentration, [crystal form] so don't eat it. or let it absorb into your skin.

Pour 2 cups of crystals in clear gallon jug. Copper S will dissolve to a 20 percent solution. Pour off the liquid and you have your product ready to use. Get some test strips (aquarium supply) and add 1/2 cup a day until you reach .5 or .75 ppm. That's it.

I had a 20,000 gallon pool. I bought a product called "Root Killer" . It is 99% copper sulphate. Read the product warnings. I put 2 table spoons in my skimmer. It will stain plastic blue. You can mix it in a jar with a lid and shake it up then pour it in the skimmer. I bought copper test strips at the pool store. .05 to 1 part per million is ok for "potable water" that is drinking water. High concentration of copper sulfate just like anything else can kill you. Diluted is ok. Farmers put this in ponds and cattle drinking pools to kill algae. There are many products. Look up "Copper sulphate algaecide" you don't need much. I only used small amounts. More will turn your pool blue. Use at your own risk. Also I have seen research that says chlorine is a carcinogen. My opinion is that copper is a better algeaside, and I would also use some chlorine to kill bacteria.

copper's not a " heavy metal " . ..... lead , mercury are examples of heavy metals. These are called heavy metals because they are very difficult to remove from the body and can accumulate and cause . ....death . Copper can leave the body . One can even become copper deficient.

@johnstra2135
@johnstra2135 7 лет назад
Ray So yes
@princeinflorida214
@princeinflorida214 7 лет назад
Ray So It took a few days to clear up for my pool at 0.5 PPM copper. I kept the pH under 7.8 to reduce staining and ran the pump for 10 hours per day cleaning the cartridge filter each day. I have both high calcium and stabilizer levels from using trichlor tabs and calcium hypochlorite for too long of a time. Reportedly both interfere with the copper sulfate performance. Maybe that is why it took a few days to clear up.
