Duplicate & make a copy of your favorite guitar neck profile/contour using an easy to build router jig. This will be the 4th video I've done that deals with this subject. Each time I try to add new information and different approaches. The 1st video shows how to copy a guitar neck:
"Copy A Bolt On Guitar Neck Profile"
• Copy A Bolt On Guitar ...
The 2nd video will show the dimensions that I used and different ways to think about creating the profile cams:
"Copy a Guitar Neck with a Profile Jig, Revisited, In Greater Detail"
• Copy a Guitar Neck wit...
A 3rd shows how to make ramps to get closer transitioned ends at the heel and headstock, reducing the amount of hand work needed:

I have used Randy's jig to make four Strat necks and they all came out perfectly. It's a brilliant design and his method of shaping the cams is ingenious. Thanks Randy.

You're the only person I've seen add the ramps for the heel and headstock transitions....Excellent work!!

Thanks, I’ve never seen it before either, so I guess that makes it my original idea. It takes some of the handwork out of it. I may add some small bearings to the leading edge of the router base also👍

I came up with a neat idea instead of having to use shims. I put a threaded wood insert into a 3/4 inch block and used a bolt to raise and lower the dowel when I needed to change the adjustment for the bit depth depending on the neck I am profiling. Some necks have fingerboards and frets on it so getting an exact match is not easy when you have your bit depth at say 1.5 inches. With the threaded inserts and bolt, I can ADD to the length of the dowel which basically SUBTRACTS the fretboard and frets to the cam. Once the blank is in place, I set the dowels to the initial 1.5 inch depth and it will create the exact profile of the neck I copied. Since the height of the blank doesnt have a fingerboard or frets on it, in my case, this makes it more precise.

Nice, 👍 of course, there are many ways to obtain the same objective. all we have to do is put our mind to it.

I've built 2 of this type of jig before and neither worked properly for some reason. I used your design and measurements and it worked like a champ! I just made my first Tele neck with it, after screwing up several aytempts with the other jigs, and am very happy. Thanks for sharing, especially the part about how to create the cams by copying from another neck. That was brilliant. So non-obvious until you explained it then it was a doh, so obvious, moment. One comment though on something that bugs me about a lot of luthiers on YT. The word height is pronounced "hite", rhymes with light, not "heith". Sorry... You keep doing what you do, and thanks again.

Thanks 🙏, I’m glad you had a success.👍 I didn’t realize I was saying height wrong. 😬 I think most people I know say it wrong. Thanks again.

Very nice! I'm trying to think of a list of tools/jigs that would enable me to build guitars on the road out of an RV. I'd also be doing Luthier work. I have used some of your ideas in the garage and your jigs are super helpful!

Thanks 🙏. Building out of an RV could be a bit of a challenge, unless you buy one of those with a garage in the back, lol

I really like your jigs and problem solving skills. I was wondering if you have tried a rounded over router bit vs. a flat bottom bit on the cuts and if so, is the cut more accurate at the ends with the ramps?

@randysguitarsbroncos223 6 месяцев назад
No, I haven’t, but I may in the future. The reason I’m using a half inch wide flat bottom bit, is because the dowel that’s holding the neck down to copy was done half inch wide, flat bottom.

hmmmm interesting jig , ........think instead of a router you counld use a beltsander mounted sideways on a sled too , think if you mount it at a slight angle so only the edge of the belt catches the final dimension you could get pretty acurate with it
