Every day is a school day Max, never seen that trick before. Worked hydraulic copy attachments but the simplicity of this for 2's and 3's off is excellent. It's been 1 Deg C here today, and minus 8C last night, as much as that is rubbish, I don't think I could work in 40C, in fact I know I couldn't 😂😂
Thanks Jon . Hey , i have never seen the pins on the mag chuck set up before either ! I watch the videos on TV , then have to remember to drop a comment as my computer is in the workshop ! Lol , i could handle the 1 deg but not the minus 8 . The high 30's & 40 get a bit unbearable at times though ! Might have to move back to New Zealand ! 👍
Gday Max, that’s a great idea, I’ll have a look at the LaBlonde page, that’s sound like a very interesting setup, it’ll be good to see the shaper going to mate, top job, cheers
Just lighting up my wood burning stove here in the UK while watching this, so forgive me for being a little envious of seeing you in shorts, and suffering a heatwave.
G'day Max, 3⁰C in my shop this morning ya bastard lol, knobs are looking great mate, wizard idea with the tracer, I'm under a blanket on the settee after spending the weekend chopping me bloddy Dyna 😊 Have a great one mate and best wishes to you and yours
Very ingenious. Have done some copy turning on a wood lathe in a previous life wood butchering, so this was very relatable. 👍 The recent heat would have been awful both at your work and in your own workshop. I’ve been hunkering down inside in the air con, not game to go outside. A bit unseasonable for Spring, not even summer yet. Makes you wonder what it’s going to be like when summer actually gets here. Luckily the big fire over Wanneroo way wasn’t out your way, they lost 18 houses and some sheds in that one. Noticed your small lathe “clacking away” during the copy turning brass. You only did the head stock bearings etc up a year or so back before moving out to the block / new shed. Any idea what’s going on there? You were having some issues with movement between the head stock and bed before the move & I think you were planning to put the bed & head stock up onto your big mill table and test for any movement in the connection between headstock & bed? 🤷♂️ Just curious I guess what the issue might be and what your planning to fix it & if the clacking noise might be related to whatever the previous issue was? Should try & catch up for a coldie before Xmas this year if possible.👍
Enjoying these 'tractor' parts, and another glimpse at your day job, some cool CAT's there. Be good to see your shaper in action for the tractor seat slide ;)
That worked great. I'm guessing you could make a flat pattern from some 6mm steel plate and weld it to some bar stock if you didn't have an original to copy from. Cheers, Preso
Ripper video Max and a great follower attachment. Was wondering about the compound usage until the power feed came into play! Glad that you weren't affected at the shop there by the fires out your way too. Nasty season coming, stay safe
Absolutely Brilliant idea Max 👍👍I'm guessing a few practice runs are recommended..Lol and running from high to low points to reduce the Bozo crash factor... Turned out great ! looking forward to some shaper action! Cold weather is kicking here on this side of the planet... Cheers...ATB....
You can also use a one inch throw indicator for the follower. The tool needs to have the same radius as the indicator point. The cuts will have to be into the job because the indicator will not take side pressure. I used to form radiused belt pullies this way.
Brilliant method, Max. I'd love to make one, but I've nowt that needs copying, lol. It's on the books though. It'll be great to see your shaper in action. Nice one....Tony
Thank you Max, I really enjoyed the learning experience, now I have to engineer a copier. PS, be careful what you complain about, it was 2.5 F here (Ohio, US)this morning, that -16.3 C.
I checked my E-male this mornning and found one of my club member spotted yor post. OK I checked it out, dam I'm jellish, Y could I have not came up with this, Steve Gambone, Jefferson, Oregon
G'day Max, Excellent video of not only duplicating the original ball etc, but your duplicating jig was right up there 🎉😊. Liked your workshop tour, as well as a diff. Lock when things go wrong. Reminded me of an oversize Key Cutting Jig. 😅😂😂
Hi Max. Enjoying the lathe work but while in my study as "light snow today with nite temp as -2C" not working to shop as much. Your close in camera and view to process excellent. Here, "All views to terrain above as snow covered. Freezing rain as new week forecast". Regards, M.
That sir is cool as hell, you have taught me so much and it is grealy appreciated 😊 ps i still haven't said anything where your wifes dishes have been😂😂 have a good one
You make that look so easy Max. Us (well this) mere mortals would be so anxious about crashing…. Thanks Is there any way you could modify a taper attachment to become a copy attachment? Cheers mate, Mark
I can't see well but it looks like that seat slide is curved and made of multiple thicknesses of sheet metal. Doing it on a shaper will involve a lot of different setups - maybe some welding of different sheets ... fun but lengthy. Good luck, Max.
I though it looked a little warm in the shop. It is a -5C here right now. Old man winter has arrived. Interesting copy attachment you made. I tried to copy a part once using the same method but I set up a indicator to follow the part. I zeroed the indicator and tried to stay at zero as I copied it. Pretty tricky.
Your going into summer and I'm going into winter . I will like to see the old shaper running . I have one 24" Rockford I need to do a clean up on and do some shop projects with it
In the first couple of years , i think it was all that was commonly available . Used in France & the Pacific , also fitted to tanks . The latter part , the British fitted a 17 lb gun to Sherman tanks . 👍
The trick with a trailing stylus copier such as seen here is to keep your main focus on the stylus rather than looking at the cutting tool. That is a mighty shaper you have there👌
Cheers . You have to keep focus on the stylus to prevent a crash . If i am doing them manually with no template , i look at the shape of the work opposite the tool rather than watch the tool . 👍
Nice one Max, I have a similar setup on my mini lathe for copying. BTW we are having the same heat wave and tempratures as you, here on the Witwatersrand Highveld in South Africa! Just waiting for the rains and cooler weather.
Thanks . We had a small thunder storm & some big rain drops for a few seconds last night . Only takes a few drops & the noxious weeds in the paddocks take off again ! 👍
Hi Max, never seen this done before, thanks for sharing, should be cooling down this week. Nice and cool up here, north east monsoon with Siberian winds.
Nice to see what you do on your day job! I bought a hydraulic tracer some years back for $30 and put another $150 into it in new oil, electrical cord and hoses. It is fun to play with even if old technology.
That's a pretty cool attachment for the lathe. Looking forward to seeing the shaper in action. You're getting heat waves while us up here in Ohio are expecting 5 inches of snow!
*_I used to rebuild rear ends. Most of them for muscle cars and race cars. Not on heavy eqpt. Good idea on the lathe. I've been working on one for my lathe but it's a tiny bit different. You're more than welcome to send some of that summer my way. We're in freezing temps here right now in Wa state._*
Hi Max, Nice work with the follower. I did something similar with a mag base and a tapered pin, it certainly beats grinding form tools you'll probably never use again. Best wishes, Mal.
Very nice copy attachment. I hope you don't get cooked by the heat. Got a dusting of snow here overnight with the temperature just below freezing which is a little warmer than average for this time of year too.
Fascinating that yesterday I was watching a RU-vidr in Canada struggling with the snow whilst today you are scaring us with your legs in a heat wave. 😊
I been around along time and I never seen a follower quite like that before -- simple and effective ! I can always count on you, Max, to come up with a new method and problem solver ! I predict we'll be seeing several thousand similar followers showing up in shops in the near future thanks to you . Double thumbs-up, Max ! 👍👍
