How would I tell someone to improve? Buy a trials bike and learn to ride it. Then buy an MX bike and learn to ride it. Ignore internet coaches who prey on your uncertainties.
Telling them to learn how to ride it is wise advice, but the key is "How" do you actually learn to ride? Some people can figure it out on their own by riding a lot and making their own mistakes, which is what I did. But some people can only ride 1-2 times per month, which would take years to build up your confidence. I'm just trying to say that there's an easier and safer way to do it then trying to learn on your own or just watching a bunch of free videos, even though they can help. Haha, was that last comment pointed towards me?
Friends and I accidentally improved by combining two mx home tracks with woods trails connecting them. We basically made an 80/20 mx/woods track with 4 min lap times
My opinion and experience is to start racing. Harescamble races. Try one. I'm not a great racer. But my trail riding skills have come a long way since I tried a couple.
Thanks for sharing - racing can definitely test your limits and improve your speed. With that said, if you're just trying to ride faster without learning the proper techniques, won't this force you to ride out of your comfort zone, increasing your risk of crashing?
