For a large operation piles are still the best way because digging silage out of bags is too slow

(1)there are two reasons for the packer tractors moving so slow one is because it helps pack each part of the pile better because your not spinning your tires and ripping up the pile and because on that pile it was fairly steep (from what I could tell) and that will save the transmissions on the tractor when you're going in forwards and reverse all the time especially on a steep slope it can take a toll on the transmission. (2) Generally, on most chopping crews all of their trucks and choppers have 2-way radios to help communicate with trucks and choppers sometimes the packer tractors will have radios as well to help guide trucks on where to dump on the pile.

It just really depends when the corn gets planted and what kind of growing season we have but Corn silage harvest can start as early as mid August in Ohio and go through October.

really nice that you actually show interest in Farming. Yes this is corn. you can basically distiguish between two types of corn. there is corn for silage wich is what you see here. the whole plant gets chopped up into small bits and then compacted on a big heap, this is done to force any air out of the heap. After all the corn is chopped, you have to seal it up with a air tight foil. after you covered it with foil it will begin to ferment into silage. its done by lactic acid bacteria and basically the same thing as sour kraut/cabbage. this is to make sure that the corn is shelf stable for a long time until the new corn gets harvested in the next year. its high in protein and has a high amount of energy wich results in a big milk production in the cows. then theres the corn thats being threshed in the fall. its basically the same plant but in comparison to the silage corn its specifically cultured that i puts the most energy into the corn kernels to make them bigger and with a high amount of nutrients. that means the plants for threshing are a bit weaker and smaller with a big corncob instead of a smaller corncob with a bigger and stronger plant for overall bigger yield as you have in silage corn. i hope you can unterstand what im trying to explain to you because english is not my first language and im not sure if everything makes 100% sense in my sentences haha. A lot of the forage harvester have a camera on the spout with a monitor inside the cab but you also have a pretty good view from inside the cab of the truck.
