In arranged marriages, they don't let the couple see each other until the actual wedding for fear they'd chicken out beforehand. That's where the "bad luck to see each other before the wedding" superstition comes from.

I mean, this is specific to particular cultures/time periods/circumstances. Mostly throughout history arranged marriages haven't been quite as strict about things like that as people imagine. It's interesting.

I've always had and always will have an undying respect and fascination for stop-motion. I know animation is hard in all its forms, but stop-motion seems especially time-consuming. It deserves more respect and appreciation.

Fun fact: this movies stop motion animation is so good, people were convinced it was actually CGI. And Tim Burton was super offended by this, because he's proud of the art of stop motion, so when he made Frankenweenie, he really held back on it ON PURPOSE so they could tell it was stop motion.

I'm so keen to rewatch Frankenweenie, loved that one too. I'm not a fan of stop-motion, but I love these two movies, and I like The Nightmare Before Christmas. I wonder if it's stop-motion or if it's other people's styles that I don't like. I find Coraline very creepy and nauseating, I just can't watch it even if I'm interested in the story - Maria

18:18 And remember the plan was to elope, and there's the line: "They told not a soul, kept the whole thing tight." So her family doesn't know Emily's dead,(chances are nobody from wherever she was from does) probably think she's still out there, having run off to marry some stranger they disproved of, with their family jewels/some of their gold now missing. Not only that but that's the last that Emily ever sees of her family after that.

No, my read is that the reason Victor agreed to marry Emily IS exactly because he lost hope over Victoria. And yes, he has come to care about Emily- as a friend. There is nothing left for him to go back for, so he figures he may as well stay and at least try and make her happy. … Out of his own heartbreak he is attempting to extend a kindness. And to his credit, having given his word he is prepared to keep it, even at the cost of giving up an unexpected second chance to wed the girl of his dreams.

For most people nightmare before Christmas is their favourite Tim Burton movie, but this is my favourite Tim Burton movie. Tim Burton actually got upset that people thought he used CGI and not stop motion for this movie, so in his next stop motion movie Frankenweenie he made the stop motion less fluid so no one would say it was CGI. Also Tim Burton said he wanted the living world to be dark and depressing and the land of the dead to be more bright and a party to contrast each other and to be a statement on the Victorian era.

For context: Old Money/Old Rich means you're noble blood. You have some connection to the royal family no matter how small. That normally comes with money, and that means anyone outside that culture is beneath you. New Money/New rich means you aren't a noble, but you earned enough money to pass for noble. But you're still looked down on because you're not noble blood. Sometimes, there are cases where Old Money loose their funds and can't sustain their lifestyle so their marry New Money. And New Money want the title, prestige, and power that Old Money can have so they marry Old Money.
@krose6451
@krose6451 4 дня назад
Old money verses new money is actually more simple than that. Old money means generations raised in wealth and new money is a family thats only recently come into it. How much of a fortune it takes over how many generations to qualify comes down to opinion. It is true that in the old days in countries with such things there tended to be some connect to nobility in old money families but it wasnt a requirement. There is the obvious thing of being nobility who tend to marry nobility can help you make/keep/inherit money. Then there were situations like shown in the film where nobility wanted a match with money and those with money wanted statis so even new money could get noble blood into the family line. Going on from that. Sam asked something like "how can you be old money if you dont have money." The answer to that in the old days up to present day is basically social currency and all the advantages of generational wealth. For a long time having any kind of connection to nobility would open doors and get you looked at a certain way. Even without nobel blood old money means generations with wealth who spend their lives socializing with, working with, or going to school with people with money/standing/influence so even if they ended up loosing funds those connections can be leveraged for opportunities to get it back, have some influence, and take advantage of name recognition especially if you keep it quiet that you're low on funds until more funds are gained. More than that "broke" looks different to the top 1% than how most of us would define it. There is a video from Ellie Dashwood here on youtube, "Is The Bennet Family Poor?" which explores and explains this topic through the lens of Pride and Prejiduce.

Stop Motion by far is my favorite type of animation. As an animator its the most impressive thing ever, all stop motion movies that you have seen took more then six years to make. Tireless, meticulous work not only for moving and photographing the characters for each frame, but also making EVERYTHING that shows up in screen. Its hard to think about but the floors, tiny paintings, tea cups, piano, fish, cob webs, cabinets, trees were all physically made by humans. There are people who sow the clothes for characters you see on screen that are just slightly bigger then the palm of your hand. Its just such an insane effort that it is incredible any stop motion exists at all!

Emily is from an old wealthy family hence why she was classically trained. Her parents rejected LB but he seduced her anyways, so she stole from her family i.e. jewels and gold. He murdered her in the woods. LB started poor and has an expensive taste. By the time he has his eyes on Victoria, he's already spent the remaining money. Unbeknownst to him, her family had sqaundered their fortune as well.

Ray Harryhausen is a legend and trailblazer in stop frame animation, with classics such as Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts. If you haven't seen Jason and the Argonauts, I highly recommend it as a classic. To this day, I still think it has the BEST animated skeletons. They looked evil, and stop frame animation gave then a little on the shaky, rickety movement that it seems a skeleton would have.

What I love about this movie: A) i want to say these vows at my wedding. B) the connection Victor shares with Emily and Victoria. C) the contrast of top world and the below world. I think it is interesting seeing how we fear death, but in this movie, they are full of life and having more fun. D) emily’s character development. I am glad she was able to get justice in the end and move on and be free. While I did ship Victor with Emily, I am glad she realized her actual need was to be free and didn’t need to be a wife like she originally wanted. E) how patient and understanding Victoria was. While she is a static character, she didn’t need to change. You can see with every good quality that she has, why Victor loved her to begin with. F) and lastly, for this post, it did make me appreciate stop motion with the technology we have now. At first, I never gravitated towards it but Tim Burton and movies like ParaNorman allowed us to see everything someone can do with it .

Rewatching this movie is so good. I remember how I did not like it that much when it came out. But then again, I was an immature 18 year old just starting film studies and I grew up with Nightmare Before Christmas so I kind of wanted something as “good” as my childhood classic. Now though, after a few years, I realized how amazing this movie is on it’s own! And rewatching it in 2024 cements it being an amazing film 😻

In fact it looked TOO good, and people accused Tim Burton of using entirely CGI when he didn't. This is and always will be my favourite Tim Burton movie and favourite stop-motion movie ever! The only one that comes close to it is The Nightmare Before Christmas😁 I just love any Tim Burton movie to be honest 😅 he is one of my favourite directors and combine that with some of my favourite actors, actresses and composers and it's gold for me 😊 But with this movie in particular, I remember that, 2 weeks before it came out in cinemas in my country, there was a private showing in my school (and I believe in all country's schools) for photography students (we can have classes in photography as early as 7th grade) because it's stop-motion and we payed way less than a normal cinema ticket (we payed like 1€ instead of the standard at the time 5/6€)...after that, anyone who went to the showing had to do a report on the techniques and editing used and use those to do a little short stop-motion animation...so this film is engraved in my memory 😅 Sorry for the long comment/rant 😅
