Should you pull straight back or should you move your hand in an S shape? We know the answer. We also know it’s going to help you swim faster. But this is a decades long debate. So, we have to explain this as best as we can to convince you to try it. You will probably love it, tell others about it and then they will tell you that you’re crazy. You’ll send them this video and the cycle will begin again. Soon we will all be swimming faster and with a safer technique for the shoulders.

Well, still working on this and trying to figure it all out. Gary Hall Sr. just did one on his channel about keeping the pull more straight line. Funny thing I have noticed is that it seems to fit with freestyle, but not with my over arm side stroke. The 'why' part is confusing, so I have to guess. Best guess is that there is an optimal position for the arm to pull and engage all the proper muscles. If I pull straight through from hand entry, on freestyle, I actually end up pulling slightly across my body. What the little outsweep does is to move my arm pull more in line with my shoulder, which I guess is a more ergonomically correct position. This is a very small sweep action, and at the top of the pull before I get to the power phase and even slightly before getting the high elbow/vertical forearm. With my over arm side stroke, I am entering the water at an identical angle so the side sweep is not necessary to get to that optimal position. This makes me think that maybe we need to enter the water with the recover arm slightly wider than we tend to do, so not on or close to the center line. It is easy to feel if I am pulling too wide with the freestyle pull. Still working on that in sweep near the middle of the power part of the pull. Other than it is a 'feeling' that makes me go 'rotate your body', I can't tell that it does anything. After so many thousands of laps pulling straight through, it doesn't feel 'right'. Still working on it.

The thing is when you are applying your technique right, then the "S-Pull" happens naturally without you thinking about it. Ultimately its not the S-Pull you should focus on, because that will make your technique worse. You should focus on the right-technique itself that will naturally move your arms into the S-Pull itself anyway.

Yeah, aiming for a clean entry and a comfortable exit while kicking your legs correctly will mean s happens, and whatever happens is fine. I am not a fan of saying the other form is dangerous, its how we climb up ladders a straight pull. I am sure there are straight pull strokes that can be done just fine with focus on mobility and how you remove your hand to restart the stroke.

Agreed. Too straight is uncomfortable, hard to do, and not faster. Too much "S" is too easy and you're not pulling enough water, instead you're going around it, avoiding it. There is an appropriate "S" based on your shoulder flexibility (your catch), strength in your pull (pecs, lats, triceps), and how much you rotate your body/hips side to side.

I learned in the 80s/90s I've been coaching since the early 2000s. I was taught the s pull but since then and exaggerated S causes too much drag. These days I advise using your hand to create force to go forwards. If you think you're pulling straight you're still doing a form of S pull but I feel teaching the s pull tends to make swimmers slower
@MrDrmes
@MrDrmes 2 года назад
Yes right. In my swimming school in 70s the coaches taught us to pull straight but reaching far forward when entering with the shoulder shrugs. I think we're still doing a little s pull any way
@coach_dellano
@coach_dellano 2 года назад
I agree with you. The “S” pull only shows a natural path our hands follow when we are pulling back and the relationship between our arm and torso changes along the way. If you teach people to force a S shape pull the effect is the opposite to the desired. Plus, nowadays the theory that has better support indicates that what generate propulsion is the difference of pressure between the back and front of the arm along the pull. So at the moment my position about this subject is that teaching the S pull is not didactic and the scientific support of it is outdated.

Have applied this new to me arm technique along with constantly tightened abs, glutes and one straight legged kick per stroke. Instead of a flutter kick from the knees. Once everything was in place and after a time settling into and coordinating all these new techniques the results have been substantial. I do a combination of breast and freestyle as follows: 60, 80, 100, 120 laps depending on time available. Respectively, my minutes have dropped to 47-52, 64-68, 89-94, 1:09-1:14. As a reference 100 laps used to take me 1:20-1:26. This is a result of just 2 videos in this series and applying what I've learned. It takes a while to coordinate everything, but once accomplished one's body can't go back to one's former inefficiency. It just feels wrong...because it IS. lol Keep in mind I'm self-taught by observation of others, asking for tips, watching videos and body awareness. Have been swimming laps since my late 20s on and off. Turned 70 this year and am swimming faster than ever in my life. Next I'm going to learn to do a flip-turn. 😎

There is a wide variety of pull patterns among the greatest swimmers. From what I have observed. The most important thing is to feel the most resistance against the hand and forearm as possible. And then incrementally increase the effort/exertion against the water. The other important thing is to attempt to present the smallest surface area to the water , ie . streamline as much as possible. Keeping the entire body up close to the surface. And using rotation around the spinal axis to generate power.

i good analogy for me during pool sessions, was to do same movements when i try to pull myself over the pool wall's edge using my arms to push on wall you use your body weight and rely on the big muscles, that's the max force you can produce if you use same muscles in water, you never get tired if in fact since i did that, my underwater speed using frog kick became so fast, i could beat most people at the local pool by going underwater

I swim alone in the pool. No coach, just yt videos and practice. I was dragging straight (that's what I thought at least, as from the comments and the video it seems that you can't really drag straight) one day a guy saw me, around 40, a former swimming athlete from Belarus and he told me to drag with my arm and forearm at 60^o degrees angle and not drag straight. When I argued he told me "Imagine you are holding a rope and you want to drag something that's attached to the rope, how would you drag it?" Of course, it is better if you drag it with an S form than drag it straight. So I changed my style. It's not that I saw major differences. I still feel that I should drag straight though, it seems more simple to me.

After 4 days of my swimming lessons i felt pain in my shoulder and i assume it’s an inflamed rotator cuff based on my own research. I realized that at the end of the day, listening to your body is the most important. Whenever i overthink the technique too much, it makes it worse for myself. Edit: spelling

Well, I learned in the late 50's. We were taught to enter the hand wide, at about a 45 degree angle down, and do a big ( or arc shape pull. Missed out on the S shape pull, but one lap pal was saying to do a couple of S's during the pull. I always figured that part of the inevitable S came as part of the rotation, and happened naturally. I see many swimmers doing a small wiggle/S pull in the middle of their arm pull. I know that is not efficient. Some thing else to work on in the pool today....
@robohippy
@robohippy 2 года назад
Well, I do need to see the next video, when it is out. So, short course pool, yards, not meters, and 500 or more laps later, and I am not sure what is really going on. If I don't think about it, it kind of happens all by itself. I am trying to figure out why. I think we all know, that except for the Olympian men in the 50 meter sprint, we need a bend at the elbow, some where in the 120 degree range, between upper and lower arm. I seem to remember Katie Ledecky having almost a 90 degree bend in one arm when she swims. This is a more advantageous lever than straight arm, meaning more power with less work. I have noticed two ways that the elbow gets bent. One, the upper arm stays in line/elbow does not move, and the lower arm bends in towards the tummy, and this is the deeper S curve. The other way is when the arm bends, the elbow moves out laterally and the hand follows more of a straight path. Not sure that there is any mechanical advantage to either one. Another thing I have noticed, and this has to do with how we, in theory, want the hands to enter the water at 11 and 1 o'clock, but they generally enter the water much closer to the center line. I figure this is due to the shoulder rotation, which is in the 30 to 45 degree range. Hands still enter the water about at shoulder width, but because the shoulders are angled, hands appear to enter the water closer together because the body is not horizontal. As you start to pull, your shoulders rotate to horizontal, which kind of spreads your arms farther apart. This would or could give an optical illusion that the hand is pulling outwards, or at least, some of that outward pull is due to the shoulder rotation. The body rotation also contributes to the hand appearing to move more towards your tummy as your hip on that side rotates up near the finish part of the stroke. This is some what easier for me to play with when doing my over arm side stroke since I can focus on one side at a time. The breast stroke pull out is a total pull out slightly, then scoop in, and then push out the back side.
@robohippy
@robohippy 2 года назад
Still working on this..... It is almost like learning to swim all over again. Can't really notice any difference in speed, and the S pattern is highly variable since it isn't habit to the point where I don't have to think about it instead of having to totally focus on it with each stroke. I have figured out that the inward part of the S happens with the body rotation rotating from low side/pull to high side, finish/recover. Still thinking that it is part optical illusion, and part planned path...

I noticed the movements of my hand under water when I was swimming with paddles. I noticed that the movement is different from what I do when I swim without shoulder blades: the palm goes closer to the body and closer to the midline. I tried to fix this and row the same way as I used to row without paddles - straight back. And this movement with the shoulder blades turned out to be uncomfortable, and besides, after that, my left shoulder hurt for 2 days. That's why I think the S-shaped movement is more natural, it's just that when you swim without paddles, you don't notice it...

Well, some many miles and laps later, I am still not convinced that either method has any advantage. I will stick with the slight outsweep coming from the shoulders being rotated when the recover hand enters the water, so your hands are pretty close to that center line rather than at 11 and 1 o'clock. I figure best angle for the arms to pull would be in the super man position, so that is why there is a slight outsweep. Not sure why this seems to be necessary in the fly though. As for the curve inwards, in watching countless freestyle videos, and people in my pool, it seems that some move the elbow outwards to get the arm bend, and some keep the elbow in closer to the body so the hand moves more in towards the body center line. I still don't see any advantage to either method. When I swim freestyle, I tend to move my elbow out more, but when swimming my over arm side stroke, I can't move my elbow away from my body since my elbow would be coming out of the water. The finish part of the arm pull remains identical.

I'm another victim of the "straight pull" myth. Yet just discovered that the straight pull is not mechanically possible. During the first half of the stroke, with a perfect EVF, the whole arm is actually like a beam compass ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_compass ), body is the center, the forearm is the pen, and the upper arm is the beam. The only possible route to push back, is a circle. If you try to force a straight route, it's either going deep into a straight arm deep pull (beam spin downwards), or prematurely lift the elbow (beam spin upwards, actually "dropped elbow" in swimming, with a much shorter path and can't exert force). Unfortunately neither of that is ergonomically/mechanically efficient. Thank you to speak it out. Hope this analogy/explanation helps.

Im an amateur swimmer and a couple days ago my coach told me to do the straight arm motion and I was using a boey in between my legs to only use my arms. Ended up getting a slightly injury on my shoulder from it. Idk how to tell him that his technique is wrong now lol
@eduardocavanagh

Both are correct and simultaneous: from the body reference system point of view, the arm does the S shape naturally, because of the rotation of the body and the catch, subsequent high elbow position, etc.. From the water or swimming pool reference system point of view, the hand moves in a quasi straight line.

1. s pull better. 2. bent elbow 3. wide pull bad, not using pecs and lats 4. keep vertical hand and forearm when pulling 5. anchor forearm and hand as pulling. catch a little wider and pull elbow in keep shoulder shrug at begining

My arm has a natural “s” pull movement but I always thought it is wrong because of the way the pull feels. I try to change it to do a straight pull because I always thought that is the correct way. Watching this makes me realize that I was doing it correctly the entire time and didn’t realize it.

I’ve never seen how I swim but I notice I always pull the arm towards my belly and then push to the side , it’s definitely a S , by doing this , my shoulders feel better , I don’t have enough strength to do a straight pull anyhow .

Hard to understand this S curve. If rotate the shoulder slight wouldn't it help to protect the shoulder unless u pull straight and the shoulder is flat?

HELP ! Do you think doing the S can lead to tennis elbow ? I was loving it but I can’t swim any more because of that since 10 years ! I’m 54. (One tennis elbow at each arm…)
@pdigirol1
@pdigirol1 6 месяцев назад
Distance per stroke along with rate of stroke will determine overall speed. Good swimmers tend to have arms appear to move slower than weaker swimmers though their body is mover faster. They make it look easier because they are more efficient. The perfect race is swum one perfect stroke at a time!
@mariano_353

Wow... It is indeed a matter of debate... Found this video while searching for straight vs S after reading the first chapter of "science of swimming faster" where they favor straight pull because it generates up to 18% more thrust. Don't know what to do now. Gonna have to try the straight pull to see if I swim faster.
@SkillsNT
@SkillsNT Год назад
Try both. I have read that book too but they don't consider the anatomy of humans. Even the people who try to do straight arm do the S shape pull. But also exaggerating an S motion is not good. Ultimately, how much of an S you do will depend on your level of shoulder mobility and strength

Don’t do the S pull on purpose. If you pull your arm, it comes a curve naturally. It’s not possible the arm draws a straight line when pull your arm.

i tend to agree with you. years ago we were taught to find the still water for your catch............im[possible. there is no STILL water in a pool or ocean or lake etc. i was in that controversy in 1970-71n as a graduate student at springfield college. the war between counsilman ansd red sylvia was a bit of an ego thing. of course they taught the sylvia theory... the S pull which takes into consideration lifting forces, a bit, finding the place where slippage or massaging the water is minimal, and of course protecting your shoulders.

I agree. The mindset should be to pull straight in order to avoid pointing the hand outward during the catch and the "S" happens naturally when we squeeze the elbow close to the body during the power phase.
