How to fix uneven line lay on spinning reels, quick and easy 

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod ru-vid.comUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

I can't believe how many reels I've tossed because of this issue, thinking bail must be bent or something else is bad. What an easy fix. Thank you for the info

*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

Great tutorial mate, I've had to do that on a few of the cheaper reels I've bought over time before I've even finished wearing them in lol. The only thing I would say is be careful using a screwdriver to pull off the washers because if they are damaged they can affect the line lay as well, I found that out the hard way lol

Thank you! In what world do we ever need the shims!! If everyone on the planet is putting the shims in why is that not a factory setting! I didnt notice it until I spooled my new reel and it was tapered from the bail to the bottom. Thank you for this video. Murray - First time watcher here and I must say - solid work on the delivery of quality information in your video. Your explanation and flow was on point. One takeaway in particular is your mention of how different lines may prompt the need for spool adjustments, even if they are the same diameter. I just bought a Baillistic LT 2500D and opted to spool it with Spiderwire Ultracast. I had to add a third washer to improve the line lay and it makes me wonder if I would’ve used Invisibraid if I still would’ve had the same problem. Now the line is slightly bunching closer to the bottom. I’m contemplating returning it and going with the Ci4, but want to give these new Ballistic LT’s a chance. Once again, well done on this vid mate!

i have the bg5000 which is the non sealed clone and if you read the manual it's supposed to be shape like a cone.

They are called spool shims and generally get the job done. Unfortunately, I've seen a couple reels that have no shims installed and spool more line to the back than the front. My fix for those is a trash can.

Great instructions! So The way you have it, sits high, will cause wind knots? Mine (Shimano Stradic FL5000), just started doing that recently.

Bought a Penn Pursuit III which was bottom heavy on the spool.. followed this video,to remove a washer maybe... found there was literally only the one washer. So removed that and the spool was a little more even... but still bottom heavy... any advice? Either way, I really appreciated this video and reinforced that every day is a school day!

My comment disappeared?? Guys, Daiwa has this as a normal feature, and it’s called the ABS Spool. It’s supposed to be a little wider towards the top. This advice is good for other brands but not for Daiwa owners.

Read the manual, Daiwa reels with abs spool are supposed to lay line heavier at the top of the spool

Mine is the exact opposite, line wants to come all the way off the bottom while the top is still 1/4" from the edge. Brand new. No washer Annoying.

Great tutorial, and it's great they supply washers, but really? Those reels are worth a small fortune and it's very average that it shouldn't come perfect out the box.

When you drop 400 dollars on a Penn reel or in your case Diawa which is probably thousand you shouldn't have to fix it. Throwing a few washers in is just a scapegoat for rubbish machining. That can be the only reason some reels spool like this and soon do not 👍
