It's my understanding that those plastic keepers are to prevent the hinge from springing open and injuring someone when unpacking and initially installing - not there as an alignment guide or helper for adjusting underbite/overbite issues.
If you undo the bands enough, they can slip over the Egg, and the hinges will open. You can not close them without bending them without the dome in there. It's, therefore, a good idea to put the hinge retainers back on. If your bands do open because you haven't used the retainers, you'll need to bolt the dome in with the bands open, a two or three-person job. I therefore prefer to use them.
Best video and explanation I've found for this aggravating problem. I didn't have my spacers, but still managed to eyeball and shift the hinge. Adjusting the back hinge bolts was the game changer for me. Thanks!
Thank you! I totally could not see how to adjust the hinge until I found your video. I didn't have those handy dandy aligners you've got, but it didn't matter....I just adjusted until the dome sat properly in the bowl. Also, I was changing the gasket anyway, so I took that off first so the gap would be right all the way around. Again, thank you!!

Big thanks for the info. I’d also recommend lubricating the hinges on occasion (WD-40 works great). If they stick from rust, that will pull the lid out of alignment, too.
Thanks for a well produced video. I was about to spend $140 for the new style hinge but this video helped me. I will have to admit that it took me a lot longer than 10 minutes to get it right but no underbite and the upper dome stays up now,

Thank you for this video! There are videos that are completely useless. This one, however did the trick. I only wish I had met plastic template, but I think I've fixed my problem. Now I have to get it heated up and tighten my bolts once more to be sure it doesn't slip.
Help. Would you please measure the distance between your bolt holes on your spacer pieces? Outside to outside, then inside to inside. I can then make mine.
How long did this last for you? As soon as I got my egg up to 700+ mine went back to uneven. This was the best fix I had found, but I think I’m just going to buy the new hinge
Meat Smoke Fire when is the last time you got your egg up to 700? It’s so tight the damn bolts are bent and everything else is bent. Would be foolish to keep cranking and crack the egg. I think the egg is rated for 10 foot pounds so. Not sure.
Meat Smoke Fire I saw another video of a gentleman using high temp red adhesive/caulking here it commonly skips down. If that’s a Fox it could save me $150
@@Payton77 I had the same problem when cooking at a high temp (700F for pizza). I tightened the bands until I couldn't any more and it still slipped. I put this down to heat expansion hitting a point where it can slip, the issue doesn't occur at 400F. However, I don't cook pizza that often and it takes all of 3 mins to re-adjust, so I can live with that. My .02c.

I don't do a lot of pizzas on the Egg, I have Roccbox pizza oven. I probably only adjust my bands once or twice a year, but we are cooking on our Eggs pretty much every day of the week.
Thank you, I’ve been having problems with my lid making my green egg useless. Only problem I only have 1 plastic bracket . Do you know any where to get a replacement. My green egg dealer is useless. Just wants to sell me a new hinge.
Meat Smoke Fire - thanks. Not ideal but I’ll give it a shot. I realize it’s important to vertically align the hinge bolts you highlighted in the video. I tried calling a couple of dealers regarding the spacers but did not get call backs. I’ll try BGE directly since they are about an hour away in Conyers, I think.
Loosen both bands a little so they can just slide up and down on the base and dome. Raise the bottom band to just under the gasket. Then use a monkey wrench if needed to lever the hinge on the big flat part.
I tried your method and still have space in the back of the egg (I have the new hinge system), I get it all lined up, and then when I tighten the acorn nuts last it creates a gap at the back. Do you have any tips?
Bernard you can do it without the white spacers. Just push the dome down at the back, pull up the band and then tighten. I suspect you’ve got the new band system.

Tried 3 times and mine is still off a little. Good thing is I can give the handle a tug after I close and it lines up. Does the new hinge fix the problem? Thanks
