"Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia informed Democratic leaders Thursday that he will not support any new climate spending or tax increases targeting the wealthy and large corporations, sinking his party's revived push for renewable energy investments and further undercutting the country's ability to rein in carbon emissions.
While Manchin's refusal to endorse green energy funding may have been entirely foreseeable given his close ties to the fossil fuel industry and his role in tanking the Build Back Better package just months earlier, climate advocates nevertheless voiced dismay at the power one individual has been able to exert over a process with implications for billions of people across the planet.
"This is nothing short of a death sentence," warned Varshini Prakash, executive director of the youth-led Sunrise Movement. "Our democracy is broken when one man who profits from the fossil fuel industry can defy the 81 million Americans who voted for Democrats to stop the climate crisis. It's clear appealing to corporate obstructionists doesn't work, and it will cost us a generation of voters.””

That is correct. Then again this is no surprise, West Virginia is a deep red state you either have Manchin or you have a Republican senator. Manchin might not vote for the Green New Deal or any of these big ticket items but he was essential for pushing through Ketanj Brown Jackson for example. Would you like a Republican in his seat instead? I mean I would, I am conservative but the point I am trying to make is you people are complaining like the guy is a Senator from California. He's not, he's the best you can ever hope in that seat. Why are you talking about this? It's not like you can change anything?

Manchin and Sinema are the volunteers/fall-guy for the donor class. While the rest of the democrats vote the way their voters want them to vote, Manchin and Sinema can vote to derail anything the donors don’t like. So, the democrats can say there is nothing they can do they do not have the votes. But if the democrats had a slightly larger minority the donors would find more conservative democrats to make up the difference. Or if their voter wisened up and voted out Manchin and Sinema, other sitting democrats would suddenly find their Republican side. Afraid of the massive push back and criticism by voters? Don’t worry, your donors will make sure you are sufficiently compensated for your betrayal of voters, … I mean service (of the donors).

Let this be another reason why we need to go out and vote. Not only will we be a referendum on removing the Christo-Fascist Republicans from power, but also a referendum to neuter the power that Manchin(ema) has to torpedo basically every potential bill. We should know better that Manchin is an oligarch with deep investments in the coal industry, so no surprise that he is going voting against a bill that basically curbs pollution and takes a cut on fossil fuel industries.

Conflicts of interest exclude so many people from being in positions of influence. We wish the best for America, but we also see that the right-wing extremist evangelicals have taken over your government by brining you overnight to 50 years ago, saying that women have ZERO control over their bodies anymore. In fact it is so bad, they are now wanting to know who you are sleeping with, in what positions, and force 10 year olds who were raped to carry that child and for her being 10 or 11 to be a good mother while providing no support. Here in Europe, we were killed by the hundreds of millions when the Catholic Church ran our countries. We finally stood up and chased them to the US and other countries. We have ZERO mass shootings and ZERO mass bombings because we aren't allowed to own even a shotgun which must be registered. With this shotgun, we can only hunt. If we kill somebody with our shotgun, we are put into prison for murder. I hope that your Constitution can be finally updated since you were only allowed to have a musket at the time of its decision, not a high powered rifle that anyone can buy at 18 years old that will literally decapitate you and make you unrecognisable. Politicians should be required to sell all ownership and stocks in all companies. It's not like they lose their investment; they convert it to cash, invest that in government bonds or something. In fact, force them to invest in government bonds. This way they have a) no conflict of interest encouraging them to block legislation for their own self-interest. b) investment in the country so that they improve the value of their investment by making the country better. It's a win/win.

Firstly, I'm an Aussie, what would I know about the US? Well, as an outsider looking in, I want to scream at the screen! There are 3 major issues in your country from which so many other issues stem. You all know the first two, and this is the third. You have members of your two major political parties that, if not proven to have been openly corrupt, at least have major investments in areas they should not be allowed to given their political position. At the very least, the two major parties should not allow members like this in their parties. Let them run as independents. It would be curious to see how many of these guys would get the vote if they weren't the only democratic option in their areas! Now, I know there's the fundraising to look at, these double agents pull in big bucks for their patsies, which is why you also need to sort that healthcare BS! It's a drain on your economy, sucking in vast quantities of money and giving very little in return. Guess what, you fix healthcare by tacking on a public service pay amendment which ensures all sitting members have a fair, possibly generous income, and you'll still be paying less than now! You now have a government with no need to take money from corporations, that is able to act on their convictions! You ban congress and the house from taking any financial contributions from donors, and you don't have to deal with this crap again. That's a very simplistic view, there are probably things I haven't considered, so feel free to educate me, respectfully, of course. As for your third issue, I'm not going to get started on that one. Besides, if Americans didn't have unfettered access to high power weaponry, a lot of your movies wouldn't make sense any more! What are you going to do? Start setting every movie and TV series in downtown Kabul? 😉

There's one piece of this that you're missing: Renewables (in this case, photovoltaic solar and wind turbines + storage) have the lowest marginal costs of any form of electricity production on the planet, so the fossil fuel industry getting into that form of energy production (slowly) is a no-brainer for them. However, it's a market that they won't be able to corner, so the industry is purposely stalling (by bribing politicians) until they can reorient toward the parts of the energy sector that electrification won't impact (air and space travel as well as ceramics/plastics). They'll probably get into wave energy and OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) because they have the engineering chops (and the wealth) to make those sources of electricity (less hampered by the intermittent nature of wind and solar BTW) mainstream.

@@torreydavis1690 I know that PV panels use both rare earth minerals as well as more abundant minerals, just as I know that increasing the efficiency of PV panels (particularly using abundant minerals) is a work in progress. And I also know that despite the challenges that occasionally arise from the procurement of rare earth minerals, the marginal costs associated with producing electricity with photovoltaic technology is *still* lower than fossil fuels, and much lower than nuclear fission.

Because every source of energy production has its drawbacks, and as I mentioned, there are going to be sectors where electrification won’t be feasible for the immediate future (like ceramics and space travel).

You bet your ass there's a connection between renewables and gasprices, except it's completely the other way around: imagine a world where energyneeds for running your cars and households are met by communal measures able to supply that energy for free, prices for fossil fuel would obviously drop instead of rise - causing dire consequences to any hierarchies related to skewed fossil-resource distributions.

If the Democratic Party doesn't find a hero to lead this country by the next election then we are done. The rest of the world will shut us out. Out of 330,000,000 people we had Trump/BIden to choose from? THat is it. We can't be trusted if this doesn't change. You can't blame them.

I'd sack Manchins wife for misconduct, taking away her pension and health benefits. I'd have him and his daughter undergo deep investigations investigations into everything they've done since birth and I mean everything, I'd want to know how many times they've pissed.

There's a documentary out there about how this thing that calls itself a senator owns the only operating mines that produce and the only plant that burns the dirtiest coal available on the planet. It also happens to be the cheapest to be dug out of the ground and he managed to buy the mines cheap due to the then laws banning its use in the country but then he used his governmental power to carve out exceptions for his mines and his power plant.
