This brings memories when you didnt need to corrupt harddrives with programs, they just randomly corrupted themselves. It was not so quick, but when you started to see this random errors you could already assume you might have last chance to backup bare essentials before system fail (and good luck getting backup media in 2001)

I've done worse on real hardware (I have crappy luck). 1. Harddrive lost power while the PC was running, turns out windows throws a major fit when you try to shutdown and the boot drive isn't accessable. 2. DVD read sensor blew up (actual black mark inside the transparent chip), while I was playing a movie, completely frozen. Even hardware reboot didn't fix it, hard to physically remove the DVD drive, due to this being the era of IDE master/slave devices.

Windows will not add more drives to letters (C-Z, A, B) but they can be accessible by mounting it to directories using devmgmt.msc . Linux should do what you've written

HxD is a solid Hex Editor but I only used it a couple of times messing around with Debug mode in Undertale before the Modding community came around Also the worst "Bricking" I did was uninstalling Python on Linux Mint

I accidentally zero-filled my SSD from 0 to around 2 000 000 sectors not too long ago. After fixing the MBR and important files Windows 10 needs for booting everything looks to be fine! And there still are big chunks of 0 filled sectors in that region..
