We are learning to Scottish dance at school...ITS SO MUCH FUN :D

I am learning this here in NZ, and loving it. These fit dancers have given me more inspiration to get fitter and dance more. Well done the Scots. Love it

my family came from Kilmarnock, we go to Festivals every year, can't wait to get over there!

@taylorxz12 scotland is not crap its amazing when you look at the diverse culture and history , the music isnt dumb its traditional bagpipes , and they are wearing the uniform for the dance much like how ballerinas where tutus ?!

@Lyolyaignisfatuus Traditionally, kilts would be worn to represent an individual's family/clan, each having their own unique tartan design. For displays and ceremonial activities, everyone may wear the same tartan (eg. To represent a specific military division or a team).

You can never be too auld to learn Scottish Country Dancing.

To andreazuffer: I don't know the dance, but the first tune is "the Barren Rocks of Aden;" the second sounds a little like "The Braes of Killiecrankie." If I a wrong, please someone tell me! Then comes "Mari's Wedding."

I recognize, Mairi's Wedding, the song, but not the dance. However, I do know, Reel of the 51st Division and The Drunk Piper. I am a member of the Los Angeles Branch of the RSCDS and would like to say, well done, lads and lasses!

@charby2234 "Wish you would have"? Why not now? Scottish country dancing is grand stuff at any age, and the more you do it, the more it'll keep you in shape.

It depends on the "skirt". With a traditional kilt, no, since men are usually the ones who wear it. But there is a special skirt I used when I did highland dancing that was only meant for one dance. It was a little bit longer and wider than a regular kilt, and I did hold it in that "itty-pretty" fashion, more like a lady, as if I were about to curtsey. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for answering! Of course you are right, now that I listen again! I sing Nutbrown M. but it sounds so wierdly different on the pipes that I truly didn't recognize it until you told me. I understand that this is because the pipes can only play certain intervals and not the infinite number that can be sung. This is so funny! I can't wait to tell my friend the pipe major What a dummy I am--he will get a laugh.

Nice dancing. I know how much it is murder on the feet on those surfaces (hated dancing out of doors at any time)...I miss my days of demonstration SCD,,,,,oh well, if they can accept a retired 65 year old back maybe I would try again (but the polish would not be there I'm afraid)....aaahhh...the good 'ol days! :-)

We are dancing this in Stornoway this month. Interesting to see two men-only and two ladies-only couples. That means corners are always men only or ladies only.

yay! finally a dance where the men's skirts (kilts, yeah yeah) where the men's "skirts" are shorter than the women's! And where the men's outfits are more revealing than the womens! yay!

Actually, each weaver would have his own tartan. If the whole Clan got their Kilts from the same weaver, they would be wearing the same tartan, but originally there were not such things as family tartans. Those just arise from the gigantic mess of sorting scottish tartans after the english had banned Kilts between 1500 and 1600, I guess.
