My least favorite job on a Corvair is to remove and replace the fuel tank. Join me as I remove the sway bar, remove the fuel tank. I replace the tank, sender, sway bar bushings, filler neck hoses and make a few mistakes along the way.

Thank you for the video. My 1969 had a new tank installed in 2011. Never saw bad weather but when he installed it he decided to “coat” the inside of the brand new tank! It is now peeling and floating inside. The tank is shiny inside and out, but it has to go. I’m doing the job with car ramps and cardboard to lay on as well. I envy that lift! 👍🏻

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I wonder if you could get your tank internally cleaned by a gas tank place or something. It would be a shame to throw it out, although the replacements are cheap. Buy a new sender and sock, just for piece of mind.

@@SlowCarFix you need to rough it up by adding nuts and bolts or a small piece of chain inside it and shacking it around to give the coughing something to grab onto. I just replaced my tank in a 1964 Spyder and painted the out side with a rust preventive coughing I was thinking of also doing the inside but decided against it..

at least you have a hoist, I did mine with ramps laying on a piece of cardboard. But we do what we have to do for our hobbies. My least favorite job is trying to stop all leaks from the auto trans. I think my case is worn because new o-rings don't stop the leaks. 1964 Monza

Many Thanks for the video! I have a Tuxedo Black '63 Corvair Monza Convertible and it's leaking from the filler tube hose (purdy sure ;o). I checked the forums and was thinking of trying to replace the hoses without dropping the tank but... a few days ago i noticed that the gas gauge needle has started acting wonky so... I went ahead and ordered the "ULTIMATE "CLARK" REPRO GAS TANK INSTALL" Kit. Not looking forward to it... it's unanimous that it's a PITA job... but doing it the right way will be best in the long run and (knock knock knock on wood) it will never have to be done again. Speaking of PITA... I just did the e-brake on my White '66 Monza Convertible. Not brain surgery but... anytime you are working under the dash of a Corvair you know you're not there for a good time. I'm glad that it's over and I hope I never have to do that job again either (knock knock). The cherry on top of that crappy job is that the car looks exactly the same ;o( I'm sure I'll feel the same when this gas tank replacement is done. It comes with a cherry too!

Ummm...Clarks heater ducts are the right size...there is a support that keeps it off the axle. Maybe you don't have the support? I did the tank on my '61 and it was dirty but I was able to do it in my garage without a lift as you have. I too put electric pump on mine and a filter before and after the electric pump and used a pressure switch back at the old oil pressure switch to shut it off(no oil pressure , no pump). I put my electric pump back close to the engine instead of at the tank itself. Worked beautifully for me.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix Год назад
We can agree to disagree on the hose length. Page 101 in Clark's catalog, 4" hose comes in 36" lengths and may require cutting. There's a note that says they should be kept as short as possible. Part C4255 is what I use. Yes, I have the hose hangars. This car has the inertia switch and the oil pressure switch for the fuel pump. Typically I don't install them when I install electric pumps on Corvairs, but I'm glad this one has them. Yes, I used to do them in the driveway as well. Mostly why I don't like it is that it's dirty and the filler neck connections are a pain. Thanks for watching. 👍

I just I just came from the Mecum auction in Indy. You wouldn't believe the mediocre paint jobs on vehicles that are selling for $100, 200,000. Nothing beats a survivor. There was a 57 Chevy 4-door hardtop, with Factory fuel injection. Most original black paint with red interior, 3 speed knee knocker, And mostly Factory stock, 14,000 mi, I would have paid double the $77,000 it sold for

I have to repair the filler hoses on mine. Pulled the wheel and tried to get at the clamps that way. Then I decided I was missing something so I went to Corvaircenter forum and asked what was up. They said there is a grommet around the fill neck right below the gas cap. Take that grommet off and the fill tubes come out still attached to the tank. Thanks for the video, I haven't been under to really look at it. Now I know what Im in for! Thanks.

What's keeping us from pulling off the upper link bolt for the sway bar instead of prying open the link? Hoping to swap my tank out this coming weekend.v

Just access and car condition. I find with Canadian cars, there's no way you're getting those bolts off unless you snap one. It's not that big of a deal to just opening the clamp. Either way is fine. Best of luck this coming weekend.

behind the vents is a metal box. You might have to remove that. It's shown clearly on Clark's Corvair web page.

I am in the process of doing this vary same repair, got a Clark’s tank kit with all hardware! I made one mistake of trying to get upper and lower bolts holding the sway bar, I’m cutting the bolts, due to the rust welding the inner bushing support to the bolt, it wouldn’t come loose no matter what I tried!

After seeing the video I don't think I'll have our good friend do this, it's too much to ask, so I'll look for a shop to do this. Not sure if it's a ground, gas gauge or sender unit issue. do have new ones though. As for comments from others about your stuff or anyone's else. People should just respect what others have. Maybe someone can't afford better or they just like it that way. If the person is happy others should be for them too. Christian.....super video!!!
@SlowCarFix

Christian, if it's just the sender, it's not a big deal for a local shop to do on the hoist. it's the tank removal that's a pain. I don't think you need that. Thanks for watching.

I avoid taking my classic cars to the gas station. I fill cans and pour them in at home. Never fails that someone will walk up behind me while fueling my 59 Belair, { I have to crouch down behind the license plate) and tell me that they like the 60 better or that the Impalas are nicer etc. etc. Those folks don't even have any kind of classic that they have poured their time, money, sweat and blood into. My inner dialog says " go f**k yourself". Of course not everybody is like that but I don't enjoy someone hovering over me and yapping while I'm trying not to splash gas on myself. Kind of takes the fun out of the drive. Anyway keep fixing them and enjoying them and to heck with the idiots out there.

I just try to ignore them the best I can. I don't mind when people ask questions or are curious, that promotes the hobby. I don't care for needless criticism. I just like using and enjoying the cars. This is one of those jobs I have to get around to. Given my '65 Monza is a complete piece of crapola, there are LOTS of other jobs to do. Still hoping to find a better car as a starting point. There is a '65 Corsa for sale locally that keeps dropping in price as nobody seems to want it. The 140 heads and water injection on the turbocharged engine turned me off among other things. Eventually something decent has to come up for sale in BC... What is your opinion on the 140 engine with Powerglide combo? One of those in a '66 Monza is currently for sale and I am trying to get ahold of the owner...
