Shibu and I had a discussion over various topics including instrumental insemination of honey bee queens, where we both learned it, and what we have learned since then. We also cover breeding, cryogenic preservation of germ plasm, and several other cool topics. He has some interesting breeding stock available including Carniolan and Caucasian lines, and offers affordable instrumental insemination equipment.

Cory and Shibu, thanks for the information!!! So I am not the only one who feels a little overwhelmed by starting this process! I want to say it was great getting to meet both of you at the Hive Life Conference.

I particularly like the way your both dealing with reality of the processes and how difficult it really is to pull everything together, to actually have queens ready and then then to carry out successfully insémination and réintroduction. Many procédés going unnoticed ! It’s a huge amount of work. Gréât also that you are sharing your information ! Insémination is not for everyone but your sharing of techniques is a great help to those able to have a go!! 💯🐝

Good video. I’m pretty sure I’ll be leaving ther II to you Cory, but it’s good to learn about the process. Regarding your single drone insimination: If you insiminated with a single drone, set that queen up in a colony, and then caught drones out of that colony, wouldn’t they all be identical and yield enough semen for a well mated queen?

The drones would still be a recombinated set of the queens dna. So not identical, but very close. The drones wouldn’t be affected by single drone insemination in this case since they’re unfertilized. (No father only a grandfather) The workers would be very narrow genetically though, from not having the multiple drone paternal lines.
