A new study published have proposed changes to Corydoras names. The study validated Corydoras, Aspidoras, Scleromystax, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster, Brochis and Hoplisoma.
Here I am discussing these new name changes and their effect on the hobby if any.
The paper:
Dias AC, Tencatt LFC, Roxo FF et al Phylogenomic analyses in the complex Neotropical subfamily Corydoradinae (Siluriformes: Callichthyidae) with a new classification based on morphological and molecular data. Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2024 1-31 (11 June 2024)

I'm from group WTF! Do to lack ilof information. I appreciate your explanation of it, now we just need the scientist's to finish naming the C, CW, and L numbers to squash further disagreements.... It is frustrating enough to make me want to quit breeding at times... 😡🤬🤬😡😤🤣😆😁

People have been freaking out due to name changes, but it's just the genus for grouping purposes. The species and common names are still the same. The subfamily they are all a member of is still corydoradinae so calling them 'cory' still fits. It can be a pain to keep track of changes, but they are for good reasons. I'm sure people will freak out again when brochis gets split up even more. It's currently too broad and it's split was tabled until later when they could do a more focused look at it specifically.

Yes, I think this work is long overdue and welcome. That’s kind of why I tried to cover all the angles and tried to include as many perspectives on the topic as I could. Those that use common names don’t even have to take notice of the changes, and to those who like to refer to their fish with up to date scientific names can adopt them and update their labels.

In fact, I contacted one of the authors of the work, and he told me that there will not only be changes in Brochis, but also in Osteogaster aeneus. He told me that there is work in progress studying all the South American populations that are in O. aeneus. , where he told me that many species that were synonymized in O. aeneus are going to be separated, and with this the species that I capture here in northeastern Argentina would no longer be O. aeneus, it is most likely that it will be revalidated for this population as a name official species that of Osteogaster macrosteus, and so with many other populations that are cryptic species within O. aeneus, which by the way O. aeneus would be restricted to a small region in northern South America, in the rest of the subcontinent they would be new species that They would have their name revalidated as their own species, and which is currently, as I said, synonymized with aeneus. For now, many varieties of bronze cory will no longer be of a single species, depending on their population origin they will be new species, for example, the robust and enormous aeneus that are sold in the market are from populations in northeastern Argentina, southern Brazil. and from Uruguay (very different from the thinner Morofo type) would become another species, in fact, I believe that the most popular albino variety of bronze is from these populations so it will end up being a new species in the future.

@@ElAcuarioArgento yes there is a lot more to come. I am super happy that there are taxonomists looking into the Corydoradinae. I always assumes the "aeneus" was a species complex with a number of cryptic species yet to be formally named. I hope some will eventually make their way to Australia

@@KillieOrCory I hope that when the new species within aeneus are official, you can get a good variety of them where you live. Here in northeastern Argentina I have four species of "Corys" in natural ecosystems (corys for the subfamily seems correct to use), O. aeneus (for the moment, when it changes it could be macrosteus is a great possibility), H. longipinnis (in Breve longipinne), G. undulatus and G. hastatus, in other regions of Argentina there are more species of "corys" such as H. paleatus (soon paleatum), and so many more. By the way, I also have native killifish here, in my neighborhood in the rural area there are winter ponds (which disappear in summer) where the species Matilebias alexandri lives, I usually capture a male for an aquarium every year.

the arrogance and ego of the new ichthyologists, who disrespectfully want to destroy with the study and work of old ichthyologists by imposing their criteria. What they should do is go discover new species for science and the aquatic hobby! instead of changing names to enhance their Ego.

i respect the scientific point of view, but from a hobbyist perspective, i have mixed feelings about the change. finding new corys from breeders in your area won't be as easy, when you have to look for all those new keywords now 😵‍💫

Yes, from hobby point of view name changes are always a mixed bag. Even if you were OK with a new name sometimes your brain still go to the old name you used for years. From the other angle I think work like these are actually long overdue.

For fish keepers who are also gardeners this is same old, same old. Botanists have been doing this forever, for i assume sound scientific reasons. But in popular gardener culture some new names stick, and other names we call plants are trips into botanical history. We all muddle along, and I’m sure fish keepers will be the same.
