I understand that Claire had a right to get mad at the girls but she should have ended the conversation after they went upstairs. I agree with what she told them about being half dressed and dancing the way they did in her house and asking them to change but she should have waited until her friends left if she wanted to go off on Vanessa instead of continuing to shout up the stairs at all of them. They already knew Claire was mad and did as Claire asked but those two girls were not her daughters even though she is a good mother showing concern she needed to end it when she started shouting upstairs at them. She needs to wait until her friends leave if she wanted to continue shouting at Vanessa. That's my opinion.

Phylicia Rashad's face was always priceless. She was the all time greatest, and most realistic, portrayal of a mom. NGL, I learned how to get my point across with simple facial expressions learned exclusively from her 😁
That's how it is in many households once the Mom gets furious about something serious! The Dad either stands silent or he goes outside till she's done verbally slaying everyone who needed it! 😅😅

I think that all Claire was trying to do was be a good parent, but also, teach her daughter (and her friends) not to play into what society demands of a woman. Sex appeal isn't everything.

What's interesting is that Claire also gave shit to Vanessa's friends, and back then parents could do that. Nowadays, Claire would have been slapped with a lawsuit (or at the least, an attempted lawsuit) by those parents for having the nerve to give shit to their kid, even though it was in Claire's house, and had every right to say what she said
She wore makeup to school when she wasn't supposed to, she tried smoking, she stayed out late with a boy when she told her parents she was studying with a friend, wanting Rudy to lie about why she would be home late, she lied about staying a friends house when she and her friends all went off to Baltimore to see a concert, she played a drinking game with her friends and got totally hammered . . . Vanessa was totally the bad seed of the family. LOL Yet somehow it was Rudy who took money from her mom's purse to buy a light up sweater, go figure.
crimzon chyld you forgot that she started out as a tattletale, used to mess with Theo's stuff, and then after she went away to college got engaged to a man 10 years her senior. One of my favorite lines from Claire was, "Vanessa was supposed to be the mature one...."
I’m 38 I can’t wait to be a mother I will take parenting lessons from how my mom raised me and my siblings, I will take from my great aunts. I look at these young mothers most are busy trying to be the kids friends instead of their parent.
My favorite part is when Claire says, "I know I'm not your mother but I feel safe in saying I speak for them..." Moms of a certain era knew when it was time to step in on behalf of moms who aren't there at the moment. My mom would've totally done the same thing.
Clair had EVERY right in the book to do what she did to those girls. If I had dressed and behaved like that OR WORSE, I would have been grounded until Kingdom Come.
Claire Huxtable's character exuded class, grace, intellect, integrity and I absolutely love the parental guidance as well as the discipline that both parents " raised " their children with, showing a great example to yesterday's parents and youth. This type of parenting should return, being close and loving your children but making it known by your children, you're not trying to raise them like they're your best friends, you're raising them as parents are supposed to raise their children, while making sure to keep their youthful innocence in tact.

Wow. Claire was such a classy and decent lady and great mother. She’s the kind of mother I’d like to be some day. Such a shame most young girls dress worse than what those girls were wearing and parents don’t care.
The end of this episode had a great message for young kids dreaming of stardom. They go and see the lady that was giving them vocal lessons and see her fully clothed just standing there singing great jazz songs and making it on her merit alone and not on superficial looks. Shows don't have old school morals anymore and this show would be considered insanely politically incorrect by modern standards for the values it reinforced like self sufficiency, personal responsibility, and higher learning.
I am actually surprised Claire let them get as far as they did with performing the song. My mother would have shut that down when they came down stairs. LMAO.. Oh, and that little back talk by Vanessa at the end when she was going upstairs would have gotten her slapped. Vanessa and the girls got off easy on this one.

I could care less what is fashionable today or not ... if my daughters came into a room dressed like that in 2014 it must be because they want their backs broken. NO, NO, NO Claire was right in then and any parent would be right now. I would have yelled up those stairs too: I gotcha locomotion!! Ohhhh i love this show ....loved it back then , love it still , will always love it . Thank you clair and cliff for making us smile and laugh so loud . Effortless acting ...one forgets you were acting and is transported back to our living rooms and homes whilst we were growing up .
Mothers like that are still around but nowadays they have to contend with people criticizing them when they correct their children. Because correcting a child will bruise his or her self esteem.
