An out of this world event, Cosmic Quandaries, held at The Palladium in St. Petersburg at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26th drew in an audience of nearly 800! With a one in a million chance of meeting one of only 6,000 astrophysicists in the world, audience members were lined up in order to have the opportunity to ask Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson a question on any and all galactic wonders they may have.
About St. Petersburg College:
In 1927, St. Petersburg College (then known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college.
In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making it the first community college in Florida to offer four-year degrees. On Dec. 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees.
In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever.
Today, SPC has eight learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. This program's offerings augment its two-year program, which has been in operation since 1963. SPC added four-year degrees in Veterinary Technology, Public Safety Administration and Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2005.
College Accreditation
St. Petersburg College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associates degrees and to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees in the following areas: Banking, Nursing, Business Administration, Orthotics & Prosthetics, Elementary/Secondary Education, Paralegal Studies. Educational Studies. Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification. Dental Hygiene. Public Safety Administration. Health Services Administration. Sustainability Management. International Business. Technology Management. Management & Organizational Leadership. Veterinary Technology.

SPC also offers access to junior and senior level courses for bachelors and graduate degrees at the University Partnership Center. The UPC partners with the University of South Florida, University of South Florida at St. Petersburg, Eckerd College, University of Florida, Florida State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Central Florida, Florida International University, Florida A&M University, Saint Leo University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Institute of Technology, Barry University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Indiana University, and St. Petersburg College.

He completely summed it all up in that last speech. There is nothing that makes me feel more sad than knowing that I will not be around to see the discovery of the origin of life, or to see the discovery of what dark matter and dark energy are, or to ever go into space myself and witness the absolute wonder that is our universe. It's so sad to think that I will never be around to witness any of that. I cannot think of anything more wonderous and beautiful and incredible than the universe in which we live, and knowing that I will never get to see any of the incredible things that happen within it (other than that which happens on Earth), makes me deeply sad.
@madwestboy
@madwestboy 9 лет назад
well dont be sad because it will be a very long time b4 we can figure out the universe. we barely scratch the surface, we have very little facts and mostly theories about the universe. but future generations will thank us because we are paving the way for them

My advice to you is to enjoy the discoveries that are happening now! There is much wonder in the world today if you bother to look. Think of this- what would people who lived two hundred years ago think of what is transpiring today? They could hardly fathom what we today take for granted. Love where your at and do not worry about what will be.I wish you all that life has to give.Enjoy!

"We are stardust, we are golden We are billion year old carbon And we got to get ourselves back to the garden" -- Joni Mitchell (Woodstock) It's pretty mind-blowing that Joni visualized this some 50 years ago. I was 16 when I first heard it and just learning Chemistry. Acid took it to a different level. As Neil said, "It's the universe that exists within us." So true.

Amongst all the brilliant minds in modern science we must not underestimate the importance of people like Dr. Neil here who have a talent to "translate" dry science into concepts that "normal people" like myself can begin to grasp. :) An added bonus with him is, that he's also able to communicate the wonder and fascination that comes along with finding out "stuff". I bet that just listening to him or others like him (say, Sagan) was *the* reason for many others to start to study...

ItaloCanadese - I really don't like the term "Yankee". rmessenger There were ideas of "The planet X" in the early 20th century, and so people were looking for it and an American did "find it" and they named it Pluto, so it was a huge deal in America at the time.They found it, named it etc. The thing is that later on the size of it was misscalculated and over the years to come it was shown to be alot smaller than originally thought. Until it was confirmed to be just smaller than countries like Russia. Really small. So it clearly isn't a real planet, it's just slightly larger than the average meteor in the meteor belt and stood out because of it's location. Good thing some Americans also took it in their own hands to remove that itch once and for all.

It is an interpretation from the from an observer moving at high speed. Similar to an observer seeing an object move at high speed (contraction of a moving object) The case of an object moving at high speed appearing contracted to an observer can be explained as the train moving away from you at a diagonal angle in the dimension of time. The same goes for objects viewed from the moving train. Their temporal alignment is diagonal so they appear shorter in the direction you are moving in.

== The Conglomerate - Universe Creation Theory (combining GOD/Nature, Ancient Religions, Physics, Astronomy/Cosmology, General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Chaos Theory, Chemistry, Biology, Mysticism, & Philosophy)== "This Universe exists because it's our playground. 'Energy can't be created or destroyed in an isolated system'. 'The BIG Bang-Bit Bang' inflation/ expansion of energy and information into the void 13.8 billion years ago was a supermassive white hole spawned by a supermassive black hole at the heart of a galaxy in our 'parent universe'. This duality combines general relativity’s singularities of infinite density in a ‘Cosmic Egg’ birth of this and all baby universes within 'The Conglomerate': multiverse without random bubble universes and parallel worlds. 'In the beginning', the Planck density of the core of a SBH acts as a birth canal. 'Quantum bubble SBH-SWH seed transitions' are 'quantum tunneling umbilical wormholes' with energy-matter and data transformed/transferred, albeit scrambled and encoded. Our Universe is 1-in-2 trillion 'self-similar offspring' each with the same inherited physical laws (‘DNA’). The ubiquitous cause-and-effect 'circle of life cycle': birth-life-death-transformation-rebirth explains infinite space and eternity - a necessity. Reproduction is GOD/Nature’s simple plan to greatly spread life for everything from cells to universes." - Seal #1a of the "7 Seals" revealed as 'Beyond Einstein Theories'; see 7seals.blogspot.com . This has triggered The Apocalypse/Revelation - only the returned Christ & Albert Einstein reincarnated could produce it.

I think the thing that really blew my mind was how we can't account for 85% of the universe's gravity. Dr. Tyson's explanation was very awesome I like his version much more than just 'dark matter mystery x particle'. I'm not a religious person by any stretch but ideas like this seem almost spiritual to me in nature. To me it opens up possibilities that religion could never conceive and it does so without the mention of slaughter or sacrifice while providing more evidence than the bible ever has.
