Incredible - for me, this is THE best version they ever played. Bernie's ominous keys and Jerome's driving drums make this really stand out, and Mike's guitar tone is perfect. There's something magic that other versions didn't quite capture. I never get sick of this one. Listen carefully, Mike's guitar cuts out at both 6:28 and 6:43. But even THIS somehow works, and sounds like he's letting Garry and Boogie (respectively) cut in for a sec! That night, they were MEANT to play this perfectly.
Having seen them in concert many, many times with Michael Hampton, as well as getting to meet & talk to him twice, (he's a hell of a great guy BTW, as is every member of the P I've gotten to meet over the years), I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the man playing the guitar solo is indeed Michael Hampton, aka "Kidd Funkadelic".
Michael Hamptons guitar solo here was a searing fire- then when Garry Shider stepped in we heard God speak through his guitar. Best version of this song i've ever heard. Perfection. Bliss.
ONE YEAR AGO TODAY GARRY LEFT US HERE TO LEAD THE FUNK BAND IN HEAVEN!!! I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF THIS SONG, ONE OF M ALL TIME FAVORITES!!!! FLY ON MY BROTHER IN FUNK, TIL WE MEET AGAIN!!!!! SO THANKFUL TO STILL BE ABLE TO BE WRAPPED UP IN HIS FUNK!!!!!
Some people really have no clue...It's Michael Hampton on Lead Guitar, the Late Cardell"Boogie"Mosson on Bass, the late Garry Shider on vocals & Guitar, and Jerome Bigfoot Brailey on drums!!
during this period the lineup changed so much the fans couldn't keep up. since there was no Internet we didn't know what went on behind the scenes. I went to a P Funk show expecting to see you playing drums and saw Larry on the throne. I didn't even know he played drums haha
Thanks man, I use to always have a problem keeping up w/ who are doing what until realized that it didn't matter ! I love them all & the different variations & effects it had on the band. It's like it was the same but different people brought different flavors to the party & once all mixed up, it's been a Beautiful Ride !!! So fortunate that my Pop's turned me onto these guy's along time ago... And very fortunate to have been able to go & see them numerous time's... Some of my favorite Music, period ! *** r.i.p. Mr. Glen Lanmont Goins
Big Foot...I loved your licks since Tear The Roof ,,,,I play and my drumming style is based off your influence to me all of these years ...Quazar Funking with a big foot and capitol g ....go away from here the tom work on that is thump...all of the flams and snare phrasing...gamin on you p-funk earth tour...nasty fills on that one....one of my favorites ever Big Foot...peace
One of the best groups from the 70's and still funking. I still remember being at one of their shows where they threw weed in the crowd. Everybody was funking after that.
There is a serious guitar battle going on up on that stage and it's splendid to watch. This is musical artistry at its best. I've played this video twenty times and every time I see it ... it's like the first time. I was always in tuned to the clever, funny, and usually blunt truth in their lyrics but these guys were great musicians. It's tragic but not surprising they haven't been elevated to the highest level in terms of historical recognition.
This video is absolutely the BOMB. The vocals, drums, guitars, and esp the bass. It's def. an Alembic bass but it sounds like Cordell Boogie, but boogie played a fretless Rick if not mistaken. If anyone can clear that up I would appreciate it. It really sound like boogie on bass being extra extra funky. I am hooked on this one for right now. RIP to Gary. There was nobody like him. Ahhhh those were the days, but they are re-lived by many on here everyday. Thanks for a great post.
alvin, in terms of recognition, im not sure that they havent? from what i seen virtually all real musicians who don't use prefabs rate these guys in the stellar and otherworldly region. and they won some lifetime award i forget the name. and their cult following is stronger than the grateful dead from what i can tell. so the triple of nods from their musical peers, the establishment/biz, and the permanent gratitude of their fans seems like recognition to me. :)
this is the shyyyt.. sooo wish i was there to experience this fAhnk.. seen gary n em in atl... before i knew the depth of the funk.. he still had the diaper doe.. love ya'll
I hear ya bro. In my opinion rock is what made Funkaelic. Rock mixed in with the bass plus Bernie workin' the keyboards and all of the outstanding vocals....Man, they were great, no doubt.
Dio did it as all Metal-Heads followed with a closed fist, fingers extended. The P-funk sign was of a loose coupling hand , fingers extended while Rick James used it with knuckles facing out as his sign of "Punk-Funk" I need to go clean all this clutter out of my head. Peace.
No, that is Michael Hampton. He came on the seen after Hazel started trippin too much on acid plus getting in some legal trouble, if I understand correctly. Hampton and Hazel were both amazing at what that did for P-Funk. RIP Eddie Hazel.....
@marcosmarcosgali What gives is George was doing it since the early 70's I remember going to his concert in 77 and we were doing it then. It was the P-Funk sign originally.
Im sorry people, but this has to be one of the greatest songs ever had.....Do you REALLY hear how he makes that guitar SCREAM first two minutes of the track???....I mean I listen to this song EVERY DAY, & I STILL get goosebumps when I listen to it.....So much emotion came from those guys when they played....Damn, I was born in '77
@Alvin276 WHAT? You sleeping real funkateers know Parliament Funkadelic will always reign as the number ! funk rock band ever, historically, until now, one of the most sampled groups in hip hop, help create G-funk. I lived it Parliament has has there reign and were at the top for a long time. Believe me they are highly recognized.
this video is incredible...... first time i heard this guitar solo was at the end of NWA's 100 Miles and Runnin if it wasnt for hip hop i wouldnt know about alot of incredible music.....sampling does spread the word...even tho some see it as bullshit....
As for the bass player..it looks like Rodney Curtis from Baltimore...he liked playing the Alembic and MusicMan bass models that gave him that fat ass ballsy sound...sometime in 79-81 Boogie took time off to chill....
guy with the red hat in beginning the introducin the song is George. eddie hazel is not with them during this time. check out older footage to see eddie doin his thing.
Holy Mackerel, Seriously, I have heaps of p-funk footage and that was hot!!! Michael is a bad ass g-player but it looks like Gary's pretty hot too! Robert
They left cause they got tired of the younger members getting more attention since they been around since the 50s and then they wasn't getting paid then George was doing sessions without even telling them that's why you heard glen, Garry, and mostly mudbone on the mother ship connection years
The University of Texas has been doing the "devil horns" aka "hook em horns" sign since the mid 50s. In this clip, Parliament was doing a concert in Houston. So the gesture may be for the Texans in the crowd. Dio definitely didn't come up with anything.
