Now THIS is how you film a guitar performance. Perfect angle, & you show fingers on the fretboard & no stupid close ups of elbows n' 5hit, & no cutaways of audience members mugging...just awesome fu€king GUITAR.
I wish my brother "Earl" had posted his cover of this before he passed. The best version I have ever heard next to the original. I cry every time I hear this song. Pure genius he was... 😢
This never gets old. I've watched Michael play Maggot Brain live countless times over the last 40 years and I still get chills everytime. Definitely good to your earhole. Play on Kidd $
And here I am, just finding MB in 2021. Hate that I missed out on such an amazing song for so long. It reminds me of the solo from PWA Instrumental by 5th Ward Boyz. It was played by JB Money aka Joseph Bythewood, a guitar player that played on countless hit rap and R&B records from the 80s until he was murdered a few years ago, by his own adult son. Joe was an amazing guitar player and, in fact, is the person who introduced me to Maggot Brain to begin with. It's a long story but to make it short, I finally figured out who played guitar on that 5th Ward Boyz song this year and when I looked up Joe Bythewood on RU-vid, I found a vid of him playing Maggot Brain. And that was my introduction to one of the greatest solos ever written. On any instrument. Thank you, Eddie and Joe and Kidd. ❤️🎸🙏
Michael Hampton was one of the most underrated guitarist during his peak Funkedelic. Michael and Eddie Hazel was two of the BEST out there, along with Jessie Johnson and and list goes on........... LOVE MAGGOT BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up listening to Parliament/Funkadelic. My older brother listened to them, I loved this song then and I still love it. Eddie and Mike NEVER got the recognition they deserved.🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
@@earlhowardiii8277 Yeah but we all know about them and new genius when we where blessed to hear it. Lists are for those that need affirmation. WE ALL KNEW. Thanks for this video on a truly legendary song. I am truly fortunate I was able to hear such a masterpiece in my time. I feel sorry for the rest that never got such a chance. Respect.
@Alan Cleveland On RU-vid, look up Pfunk live 1976, 77, 78 and 79 Houston...I was there at all 4 shows...Don't know why they choose Houston to archive...but I'm so glad they did
This was one of my Dad favorite songs I can remember him listening to it when I was a kid, he's passed on, but thank you so much for sharing this. Brings back beautiful memories! God bless you...
Mike Hampton is 1, of The Funkiest guitar 🎸 players ever, along with Eddie Hazel and Gary Shider, they formed arguably the greatest trio of guitar players ever in 1, band, 🤘🤘🤘🤘, thanks fellas
you are quite welcome... I was in attendance at the funkateers ball in Greenbelt Maryland... I was fortunate to get great position to record this video... He's one of the truly legendary guitarist of our time... thank you for viewing it
Nobody does Eddie Hazel like Michael Hampton. One of my favorite songs, and my second favorite version after original. I really got to know of Mr Hampton's talents with solos in cosmic slop, and not just knee deep.
I first heard this at 10 years old....I am over 50 and play it still... Every often hahahaha...my clients love it... Real talk!!!.... That sh*t is Siiiiiiick....!!!
Yet another incredible performance. At times, he seems to be looking for something, then he finds it, only to appear to lose it again but he had it all along. I went to Zappa concerts where in the middle of the concert he would pull up a chair and play his guitar solo and it was awesome. I wish Michael would have one that with Maggot Brain and had it professionally recorded. I can only imagine a 20 minute ear ecstasy. But like many things in life, it's a dream lost. Thanks.
Good stuff, thanks for uploading! I've heard Maggot Brain for the first time when my sister put on a French radio channel. Since that moment I knew my favorite song!
Wow! What an intimate place to hear this amazing song. I've heard this many times at House of Blues in Dallas. Would love to hear it this close...makes me emotional every time...
Outside of the funk music community, Michael Hampton doesn't get the recognition as a guitarist like he deserves to be getting. Hampton is definitely one of the greatest guitarist I've ever heard! Michael's version of maggot brain is a work of art!
Earl Howard III: My favorite live version is from the One Nation Under A Grove Album 1978 but I can't find the footage anywhere, this is all I need to SEE how he performed it. Thanks man.
I remember hearing this live for the last time at redhat in Raleigh NC only fan standing with my funk sign waving my jam and they killed it love it oh and my vinyl still rocks
Chris Edwards ... you are so right.. I have heard him play this song A Thousand Times.. And he probably could play it in his sleep.. But this particular night was the first inaugural funkateers ball.. And so he wanted to do well
I had never seen a guitar stand like that until last year during the 2020 Great Guitar Build Off. One competitor built a triple neck guitar and also built one of those stands for it. I had no idea those stands even existed and now I see them all the time since seeing the first one last year on the Texas Toast Guitars 'Triple Neck Challenger' named The Hater Maker. Challenger is their own single cut model of guitar they sell. Sort of a Tele and LP combo kinda.
Mr. Hampton, YOU are the TOP of the Food chain !!!!! Who EVER thought a Fat Yella Good lookin Colored boy could do what the great Eddie Hazel has done while You make it look so Easy !!!! There is not a Bigger ' JImi Hendrix ' Fan MORE than ME , Meaning, THANK you for your contribution in keeping it REAL !!!!! WONDERFUL !!!!!!! John
@@freewilldoesntexist4075 Eddie and Mike could have passed for brothers Mike even wore outfits similar to Eddie which was why folks kept getting them confused
Lionel Penuchot .. You are very welcome!.. This was the first inaugural funkateers ball.. and I was very fortunate enough to catch this song while I was taking pictures
Andrew Anthony it will always b Eddies song Mike have imitated enough you should be good at it but still he has Eddie Hazel Eddie Hazel family should be getting some of the residuals from the saw that he wrote but he's never be as good as anywhere rest in peace in funky Trust
Hello Michael. Joe thanks for introducing me to george. We were a jazz band, but war swap me away. You went to the greatest music artist in the world. Just listening to you play maggot brain, it touches my soul. Change, makes you wanna hustle. I can not give up on the funk!? The Best in tne world. It got me through the war, I lost a piece of me but not enough to stop a nikka?! Just funnon?! After this or father I got and you know this is...If you have the time? Peace and Love, joe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M1vDcSPs_6I.html
I miss the hell outta my teenage years. Jammin' to this, tokin' on some tasty Red Bud with the the water bubbling at the bottom of the bong. Marijuana has been the kindest drug ever to me. Fuck opioids and all the overdoses to the point of death! Fuck ALL prescription drugs coming along and snatching your ass out of this world! Fuck losing everything and ending up homeless! Fuck turning to thievery to get your next go around with the needle, pills, or blow! Fuck alienating yourself from your family who have had enough of your overdosing to the brink of death on your drug of choice! Fuck using up and bleeding dry everyone who loved you, and will never be able to trust you again! Fuck the last paragraph of your life landing in the obituaries!
Henry G. Thompson I agree... But keep in mind I shot this video a year ago...Mike is almost 60 now... The last live renditions of Maggot Brain from Hazel before his death he was no older than 40 I believe....just sayin I would love to have heard Hazel's rendition at 60
Ok. I was afraid that he had some health issues like so many other funkateers. By the way, I uploaded Maggot Brain on my channel from George's sunday gig here in Helsinki. Blackbyrd on leads.
Tapio A o oh wow.. From Helsinki... nice to meet you I watch the whole show on periscope.. Great fan interaction.. I'm good friends with Carlon and Brandi
Earl Howard III I watched parts of the Denmark and Oslo gigs from the FB live stream. The Helsinki gig was on Sunday but I was surprised how wild the crowd went even in the beginning of the show. The band had also played two nights before that in two separate countries and yet they still were in good spirits. If they would have played Red Hot Mama and Dog Star, it would have been a 5/5 show... :-)
