I love that your "back in my day" bit is that "googling things was much harder!" Ya dang kid! Back in my day, I walked FIFTEEN miles in the snow for fabrics; uphill both ways, and I LIKED it!
I think posing would be a GREAT new Cosplay 101 topic! Or maybe more about sewing? For example pattern making or what types of fabric work for what kind of project. Also this video was SUPER helpful
Two questions: A.What are you thoughts on buying cosplay? B.I know you don't crossplay, but is it possible for you to do a video on it and proper binding methods. There are still too many people who insist on the ace bangage method
She's done a few crossplays - Haru for example: I think the best method would be through the chest binder method, they are safer and much more comfortable than ace bandages. Check amazon or else a nifty site called "Underworks" for binders. Good luck friend!
I... do crossplay, though, haha! I have several videos that involve me crossplaying as Haru, and my Sugawara crossplay was recently in one of my ALA vlogs. I use a shapewear cami that I cut the straps off and fold over twice, so it's the width of a bandeau top. But if you can afford the investment, I highly recommend looking at Underworks or T-Kingdom binders! Doing a binding video isn't something I'm exactly comfortable demonstrating (for obvious reasons). But I can do a general discussion about it, maybe!
If you could do a discussion on what type of binders and methods you do, it would be a life saver. I'm actually trying to do a Haru cosplay and really want to know what you did and used to bind shirtless... if that makes sense...? It would be a great help, thanks!
I've only ever actually cosplayed once and that was last year (I plan to do it again because it's so much fun!) and it honestly never crossed my mind to ask another cosplayer for direct help/vague questions. I just like the idea of staring at a picture of the character I want to cosplay and studying their outfit and then only looking at pictures of other people who cosplayed them to inspire what's the best root for me to create it. I'd much rather think of the best way possible for me rather than what worked best for others!
One thing that wasn't mentioned that I use as a good resource is going to the library. Most libraries have websites and searching for cosplay or craft books can be super useful, especially with sewing techniques for beginners. I have also asked people who work at local fabric stores, and they can usually help when it comes to what fabric. As Squid Vicious mentioned, Cosplanner is great, and if you show what you've put in there to a craft/fabric store employee, they're usually good at finding what you need.
Can you do a general video about fabric choices? I know it's super vague and pretty costume-specific, but I always have a ton of issues on what fabric would drap nicely, what fabric would sew easily, or how shiny a fabric is. And there are so many choices when you walk into a fabric store, it's pretty overwhelming. I'd like to stay whelmed.
I am one that just heard of cosplaytutorial. I am however, a master of search engines and youtube vids. Seriously, I can narrow down results faster than anybody I know. Thank you though, for saving me hours of research. ;A; I wish I knew this earlier.
As a novice cosplayer (i've been cosplaying for a year and sewed and experiemented with a few parts of cosplaying and made a cosplay ((pretty much)) from scratch) i can say i pretty much just googled everything for most aspects of the costume, and from the resources and what i knew i could manage, chose what worked best. And it turned out! These videos really helped me start and be confident with cosplay, thanks so much!
it's kinda funny how i haven't even started cosplaying yet and i already know that you should be specific with questions... and by the way..i would like to say that your cosplay 101 series has really helped me start to plan out how i will jump into the cosplay world.. so thanks MangoSirene.
I would like to add that Pinterest is amazing for gathering references and tutorials! I usually make one board for each of my costumes and gather relevant tutorials etc. it makes me feel all organised and it's SO EASY to use!
this this this this and MORE THIS. even though I really don't need these cosplay 101 videos, I just love them so much and frequently share them on my cosplay page for newbies :D
Thank you so much I am doing a Samurai outfit and you just helped me with it thank you soooo much I wish I had found this sooner (been researching for about a month ) thank you
Just commenting this here for those who need it. ^-^ There's a social media app called Cosplay Amino, and I find that app pretty helpful for advice. A lot of people post tutorials, and there are forms where you can ask for help or just some tips to keep in mind for pretty much anything you'd need to know.
Thank you so much for making this video! I will forever link it to all the people who write me with the question "How do I make a cosplay?" :D Thank you for saving my time you awesome lady!
I'm making my first cosplay. I'm going to be rin okumura from blue exorcist and I decided to make the sword and sword cover by myself but I've never sewed before and I was really worried I'd mess up but now I'm really proud of it. It's really fun in my opinion to at least try to make it your self before you ask other people because you may surprise your self at what you can do.
I try to do my best to do my own research so instead of asking questions like "How do you make this?", I can ask more detailed questions for certain details that maybe I can't find. I've pretty much figured out how to make a lot of my current costume.
I'm so glad that I found your channel I'm learning so much now And I'm regretting that I didn't find your channel sooner Good thing I haven't cosplayed yet
Thanks Sirene!!!!!!!! Believe it or not but I specifically watch this video to get some tips on what questions to ask other Cosplayers as I've notice they can be a bit annoyed. You also inspires me to go to an anime convention from your video about how to make anime friends!!!!!!!! Sirene I'm forever in your dept!!!!!!!
Thank you so much Sirene! This was very helpful to me and I appreciate it very much! ^^ All your cosplay 101's have been a big help to me and hopefully I'll be able to be a decent cosplayer soon from watching all these lessons by you. :)
I feel really fortunate that I discovered the IMT group. Like, millions of vloggers in the world, and I was lucky enough to end up watching (almost exclusively as far as vloggers go), Solo, Courtoon and you! And sometimes Chinasaur...but she always seems like she hates vlogging. Haha
Mango! I am so happy I found your You Tube channel! I have done cosplaying for years and now that it's suddenly cool (I personally blame Big Bang Theory) everyone is doing it and there are so many new online stores and resources so I am thinking of upgrading some of my earlier attempts - I watched this with so much understanding and interest! Thank you for giving it to us straight and being supportive of others who cosplay! ~M x
Awesome video. I am fine with googling, just struggling deciding on which character for my first costume. So many in my mind. I am sure that I will decide soon.
Great video! ^_^ Thankfully I never got the really vague questions on how to make stuff. I've done the ask other cosplayers for what they did but that's usually because I usually cosplay the more rarer characters so finding anyone whose done it makes it so much easier to understanding how a certain part is done.
Thank you so much for this video! It's so accurate it's unbelievable hahaha. I've been working on a P'Li cosplay from book 3 of Legend of Korra (which I'll be wearing to Katsucon, I hope I see you there!) and I can't count how many people have asked general/vague questions about it. The biggest part of the costume is the wig so I just assume they mean that then they don't and it's just kind of :/. Your Cosplay 101 videos are great and although I've been cosplaying for a few years now I always learn something new when I watch them! Thanks for making this series!
to be honest, I relied on you alot when you were making your starfire costume. and recently I found out that my Beatrice dress from Over The Garden Wall is actually a regency dress. whats funny is that when I bought the pattern, I had no idea it was a regency dress pattern until I googled "regency dresses" and found the exact same pattern on google images
I've been cosplaying for 5 years(officially, yes. Practical, no). And I've collected sooo many tutorials, reference pictures and so on, on pinterest, which I actually would recommend. There's going to be alot of not that helpfull stuff when you search there, BUT it's an amazing site to save tutorials and stuff in folders. I love it. Just wanted to share that with everyone :3! *if some of the stuff i wrote didn't make sense: I don't speak english as my native(?) language*
I /was/ working on Batgirl 2014 during winter and your pictures were very helpful! I put it on hold tho because leather sucks lol. But yes, research is a long but super important process that I wish more newer cosplayers would do. Learning how to do research is good in general.
I have two questions.... 1. How do you feel about changing a character's gender for cosplaying? 2. How do you feel about someone who cosplays several people from the same anime? Thanks. Your video's are so fun and helpful
How funny that you bring up the PowerGirl Cosplay since I'm totally gonna make one. However I am a much bigger girl so the moleskin worries me but I will definetly look into it.
this need to be reposted again or make a post and link this video cause DAMN this is needed. I dont have an issue helping but when you did not even bother to look first and expect me to do research for you NEGATIVE GHOST RIDER THE PATTERN IS FULL!
Thank you for that video, cleared up a lot since I'm a beginner cosplayer. I want to do a Raven costume and will need to decide on the fabric for the cape, hopefully one of your sources can help me ;)) Once again, great video, thank you and have a wonderful day !
This video was so helpful! I've just taking on the task of making a Natsu Cross-play, and I was really nervous, as I've never sewn anything before! I've looked for tutorials and stuff but could never find anything useful, I guess I was looking in the wrong places ^-^
I just realized that growing up as a Civil War reenactment her, and also my mom sewing for me for various other reasons, has made me decent at what I do. I just threw together and Elsa outfit for a birthday party and an Elsa outfit for figure skating. I made my own shoes, I started selling shoes on Etsy because it was fun, and I found a wig on Amazon that I took a chance on, and it actually worked out really well once I styled it properly. I had no idea that any of this was difficult. Thanksfor laying it out to me, because I may not understand if somebody looks at me and goes how do you make this or that? I might find that really confusing and be like Hall? The first time I wanted to make a tutu, I just looked it up on Google. I didn't get it before that this might all be confusing but now I really do. I also watch your videos way too often to not subscribe I'm sorry I haven't subscribed yet I'm subbing now
I love your videos and have been binge watching them right now and have been wondering. Do you think just not wearing makeup, even eye-stuff is bad. I don't like wearing makeup and don't like buying it and have told myself that I will definitely try to wear makeup if the character definitely needs it, like Loki in his jötunn form or Grimmjow from bleach. But for cosplays where the character doesn't really wear anything that I'd have to have I kind of Don't think of wearing anything. And sometimes I feel like I might get judged on that or that I'm doing a haveassed job. What's your opinion? Thanks
I think she covered her opinion of makeup in a previous video... I think she said that makeup helps photos look good and that it really helps the whole look. Personally, I don't like it either, but I'm willing to do it if it makes it look better.
OMG, thank you so much! I always do some research, but, to me, the problem is the large quantity of information. But I am one of the "luck ones" here in Brazil, since I can understand English. A lot of brazillian cosplayers on the majority of the pages can't =[
Got herr from IMT and HOLY you're so freakin awesome!!! I love your Barbra Gordon Batgirl cosplay!!! Wish I could go to cons and cosplay like you but my parents won't let me... 😭😭😭
I've only ever asked another cosplayer for information on something specific they did on their costume. I'm usually very good at research.. but then I procrastinate and nothing ever gets done XD
I don't like using step-by-step tutorials. They usually never work for me (always having to adjust cosplays for my height/weight) and I'd rather do it the way that's easiest for me. That is, if I can even find one, since most of the stuff I cosplay has only been done by a few people, or just not something popular. I use Cosplay.com for second opinions on things like which wig to use for a cosplay (since usually it's between two that I already have) or whether my cosplay looks okay with the shoes I'm wearing. I wish more people still used cosplay.com :/
I hate when there's a certain outfit/version of a character that NO ONE COSPLAYS! I find it easier to look at irl pictures of characters sometimes since it's a bit easier.
It really sucks when it's a character that appeared for less than 5 minutes, and is in an obscure part of a well known series...i.e. my Alucard Level 0 cosplay
Not sure if you've already made one but could you make a detailed video of resin casting? I looked for yet resources but I'm too stupid to do it right ...
I had an open question to any cosplayer or mango if you have the time. sorry if this has already been asked but I believe you have done several weapon props in the past and I was wondering. I'm making a scythe prop for a black butler character I wanted to cosplay and I just read the con rules for the one im going to and it said that props using wood and hard PVC plastic may or may not get confiscated. But the thing is, my prop is made from both and has a mock "edge" should I finish the prop out and cross my fingers? Or should I look into maybe silicone casting or making it from foam or worbla? I would love to be able to keep the prop as it is if at all possible but it kind of defeats the purpose if it doesn't make it past the door. Any thoughts?
I've been researching my cosplay and I've only found 4 pictures of that character and I can't even find anyone who has cosplayed the character. The character I chose was Kirito from Sword Art Online but I chose the version of Kirito at the very beginning of SAO. The armor looks like a leather material but I was wondering if you knew of any other materials that have a similar look but might be easier to work with in case of messing up.
It's sad. How can they expect to finish a costume if they can't even do the research for it? That's the easy part - sit on your butt watching youtube videos and reading articles. Heck, I'll sit and watch tutorials just for entertainment. I've watched so many videos that I even recognized the Sailor Scout video result from the thumbnail watching this on my phone. I could make a Sailor Scout uniform from the tutorials I've watched, and I've never seen the actual show. :) Even if I have no use for it at the time, you never know. I'm currently finally getting around to making one, and using all this stuff I've been storing away for years. It's made it a lot easier than it could have been. Not easy (sewing is my kryptonite) but easier.
I'm making an annie and tibbers cosplay for for me and my boyfriend. We want tibbers to be as realistic as possible and it's so hard finding anything online. So I'm going to wing it and document the whole horrifying process to hopefully help others
