Awesome video :-) I've been following Patrick and Rebecca for a couple of years. The last video to date was named "Patrick's last storm". I was crushed. I had to pause it several times to dry my eyes. I could feel Rebeca's grief. The poor girl is lost and I expect she'll be that way for some time. It's wonderful that you dedicated this episode to them. I'll shut-up now...

I just restored a 50' Riva MY in Japan. This was mainly about replacing old equipment (generator, chargers, navigation equip., a/c, auto pilot, vhf, cleaning out the cooling system, replacing batteries, and overhauling the injection pump, adding a bimini and sun canopy) as the the hull is like new and the engines have less than 500 hours on them, and what you paid to rebuild your yacht was ridiculously cheap. To do what you did in the US would have been double, and even more here. Pretty amazing.

Thanks for your honesty about prices. We are re building... not re fitting... an Edel Cat 35. While also still working and building a house. ... to give extra income when we set sail. We started great keeping track of costs but have since lost track!! Doh!! Our problem is on a budget we are trying to do all the work ourselves but with 'day time jobs' time is our biggest problem. We set sail in October 2022 so feel there is time, but now pressure is on! Time flies!! I so enjoy watching your channel and gathering great info. Hope to meet you both somewhere in the World when we set sail. Your travels are how I hope to travel.

Thanks for the tribute to Patrick Childess, and yes he did no nonsense videos and a rebuilding of Brickhouse that Rebecca can be safe and cozy with for many years. I had my worries about how Patrick was operating without a life vest and harness in his last video and some of the other things he advocated but also made full disclosure of it being his way.... In the end of the day, we are the lucky ones who can move around the world mostly by our own design!!!

Clearly you have done an outstanding job with your rebuild. Our first rebuild of Bronco was in Philippines where, like Thailand we found wonderful people with tremendous enthusiasm at a very reasonable cost. But they also had limited experience, inadequate resources and absent supervision they would often have to repeat projects at some additional expense. I wouldn’t recommend any refit or rebuild in either location without onsite management by an experienced owner. And even with that, you will most likely find that some of the work will need to be repeated at later date by experienced shipwrights. Yes more expensive but where reputations carry weight, mistakes are not tolerated. Since most owners have time considerations, having confidence that accomplish work was done professionally and at appropriate standards may be worth the extra expense. In either case, do your homework first so that you know ahead of time what the chosen path will most likely entail. Otherwise you will not enjoy your refit experiences.

Liz & Jamie - I have been doing a lengthy rebuild/refit, mostly be myself. Here in Canada, away from the major sailing centers, it is almost impossible to hire professional help. And when I can, the labour cost is CAD90 or GBP60/hour - very good quality and fast, BUT EXPENSIVE! When I bought the boat in the US/Chesapeake good work was readily available but the cost was even higher! For the scope & quality of work in Satun, I believe that you did very well!

I'm absolutely no expert, but based on all the cost videos I've seen for refits, I can't see how you wouldn't crack $100,000+. Maybe the guy was right about worker efficiency in NZ, but cost of living in NZ for a flat would probably have been three times, for half as long? Add transport, travel, and food? I can't see it. Thanks for the work it took to summarize 13 months into 4 videos. I can't imagine. Hope you're both holding up.

I am afraid the quality of the work tradesmen in Europe deliver has deteriorated massively over the last 20 or so years whereas in Thailand it seems to have gotten a lot better, I have a lot more confidence when have work done in Thailand than in Germany or Switzerland. Guys for the countertop consider Corian, if installed correctly it's extremely durable and you can keep buffing it up forever, stains scratches anything can be repaired with a bit of buffing. You can use it even for your cupboards and other areas.

That was a really interesting episode. with regards to labour, you were paying £12 a day, back here in UK a relatively competent carpenter will charge £15 and hour and a good shipwrite will charge £25/hr so the UK version would have to be significantly more efficient than their Thai counterpart to make them more cost effective. My the time you have crossed the pacific to Japan and then pootled down to New Zealand, via Australia Esper may be ready for another refit so you will be able to compare the two centres and see which one makes most sence. Having said that you can't put a price on the peace of mind you get working with crafts people you trust and respect and the value you placed on the likes of Tong and Tui is pretty obvious. I know that one little heart beat has fallen silent on Esper and hope that you guys are finding comfort in looking through your old videos and remebering all the good times with Millie

LOA 43 One Way Lift $201 Per Day Rate $40.77 Monthly $749 six months $498 These are Canadian, usually only 50% of the pound but you need to add 12% for taxes. The actual yard cost here would be less than you paid at PSS. The labour and materials, way higher at $100/hr or more per worker. $50/mo per person to live on the boat. power is metered, shower and laundry etc is available on site. Large supermarket not too far away and it is a marina, one of the lower cost ones in the area. 75 ton travel lift rates are what I posted, I didn't think you would be interested in the 250 ton travel lift rates. ;) It is a bit off the beaten track but fairly accessible. No problem about answering the questions, specially when I see them before you do.

We completely reupholstered the saloon with all new materials in the winter if 2017-2018 and after two years of full-time living aboard it is completely knackered. Lounging daily in extremely warm climates often with a lot of bare skin, sweating bullets all over it, skin oils, and just the wear and tear of sitting down and getting up multiple times a day and skootching around just beats it up something fierce. It is all getting threadbare. Ours is a small 35-foot sailboat and there just isn't a lot of different places to hang out inside. Our sitting and lounging spots get used constantly, every day. We spend some time out in the cockpit and on deck but because of bugs, heat, and sun it is often more comfortable inside the boat where it is cooler and bug-free. In the evening here one will get eaten alive outside once the sun goes down. Then over the last couple months of being in isolation for COVID-19 on anchor put the nail in the coffin. We were literally always home. The upholstery got no rest. There is no rehabilitation or cleaning of the upholstery but I believe the new foam can be reused when we redo the settees and nav desk cushions soon. We will use better material next rime bur I fear no matter how good it is reupholstery will be a regular job for us every few years.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 года назад
Yes, we recovered the foam, not a huge or expensive job. The new fabric is hardier and in a textured grey/brown doesn't show the marks too badly. Cheers, Liz
@svbarryduckworth628
@svbarryduckworth628 4 года назад
Do you ever use any slipcovers over any of the high-traffic cushions? My wife hates the feel of polyester fabrics and often will put a sarong or towel on her side of the settee. If anything her side is more threadbare than mine where I do not bother. Maybe a fitted cover would work better, and could be washed regularly. But at that point why bother reupholstering anyhow if it is always going to be covered? When we started cruising the wear and tear on cushions wasn't even on my radar. On land furniture often lasts decades. We never realized how in a smaller space the few nooks and sitting spaces would so much more harder used. We made a custom-fit padded mattress pad cover on each cushion in the sleeping area of the V-berth as well as a couple sets of fitted sheets. We refoamed those cushions too but were able to save the original upholstery covers from 1976 and they still look pretty good now too. That adds credence to the thought that slipcovers are the way to go on the settees. Time to get out the sewing machine again.

There's a video on the price of our sails and I think we mention the cost of our lithium set-up in the episode on going lithium too. Most of these are upgrades or replacements, though, and many other smaller items which wear out having to be being replaced too. It's an on-going project!

My boat is on the hard in Trinidad and I am thinking of doing all of my mechanical and rigging there and then going to Thailand for all the fiberglass, carpentry and painting. I will be documenting our refit on RU-vid as well, if nothing else something to look back on. How do you think the 6mm of teak has held up in the cabin? Different subject - do you know Celestial Navigation? If not do you both want to learn? I have an idea that we can trade some skills if your interested. Hi guys. My wife and I have been watching a number of your videos and been very impressed. We have a Sunbeam 44 and in the next few months we are about to embark on the start of our journey. I have a quick question. As you have spent most of your time overseas and not resident in the UK, did you become liable for the country's tax laws, or does it work some other way? Look forward to hearing from you, Tom & Kim

I’ve refit two boats on my own using the expertise of a yard to handle projects out of my scope of knowledge. I would struggle to get the same quality of work and attention to detail that you managed to achieve in Thailand based on your budget. Well worth doing it there. I’ve only sailed once there on a friend’s Bruce Roberts 44 and loved it over there. I’ve been back a couple of times but not sailing.

Very interesting guys...one thing you did not mention (you may have covered this below already...sorry if you have) is you need also to offset your yearly costs you would have had without the refit. Great job though and thanks for the video.

I get the feeling the trade off is over the variable of time. Which is a big factor whether you have it or not. NZ or the Med might be fine if you want things done fast since parts are more readily available but if you have time to wait and source parts all over the world for bargains I would go with cheaper labour costs and possibly lower parts cost. Not to mention the ability to be more immersed in the local culture. 👍🙂
@followtheboat

Yes, we still think it was cheaper in Thailand, even though it might have been quicker in Europe. But immersing ourselves in a new culture - you can't put a price on that. Liz 🙏

Wonderful video as usual. Listening to you guys talk of the expenses I have to wonder if it wouldn't be a close call at minimum or better in the long run to just get a new boat? Especially if , like me you are thinking of getting an older boat to refit/rebuild for living aboard. 😎

Also another way to look at it is how many years before you have to do this level again. I believe the yearly price is fairly small when you look at it like that. 62k decided by six years mean a 10k cost per year. That’s pretty small. If it last more years the number goes down more per year.Yes I know there will be other things to fix. I’d rather live in Thailand than most other places in that area anyway. No matter the cost for the boat your not living that cheap in most other parts of the world for that length of time and I think that is not debatable. Love your show and the info you provide

I don't know if I'd call that a refit, but far closer to a rebuild. I haven't rebuilt boats, but I've built enough homes to compare that to gutting a house and rebuilding within the bones and refinishing the outside. The finished job looks great. It always amazes me how live aboard sailors can take an older boat gut it and rebuild it while absolutely put the original interior designer to shame.

I can't see how costs in NZ, Europe etc would be even close... double seems unlikely more like four or five times as much I would have thought. If you are paying £12 per day as opposed to perhaps £120-£200 per day even accounting for more efficiency it seems unlikely. And then £80 per month for accommodation! It's not even close. Great mini series. Only just found your channel from a post about losing your cat Mille - very sad. :(

Is it cheaper, meh really difficult. As brought up the time or efficiency of time, the costs of importing, etc will likely offset this. There is also the factor of simply easier networking and obtaining items is so much easier in your own country and language. So would not be surprised if it is a case by case basis in which could be or could not be. HOWEVER, the quality of the craftsmen and work imho makes it all worthwhile. Sure you can get good quality elsewhere as well, but not at that labour cost as you will end up paying even more then the standard rates for such quality. So many places simply does not have the vast amounts of many of these trades anymore to such standards in larger numbers. What I can say is you got a good deal for all of that work, in which yes I am sure could be done elsewhere as well, but regardless you got a good deal and quality work that anyone should be happy with such results.
