That's actually cheap. BAck in 2003 I needed brain surgery after a major car accident. It was cheaper for me to fly to Japan (my wife's family lived there), live there for 6 months and have the surgery and fly back than it was to have the surgery alone here in the U.S. And what's worse, many of the qualified surgeons here in the U.S. didn't want to do the surgery because they considered it to dangerous. The Japanese doctor who did it thought it was just another Tuesday. I still remember the nurse smiling down at me while she was gassing me, she was counting backwards and then swatted me on the forehead and the next thing I knew I was waking up.
i mean flying to japan is not that much, its expensive sure but not 50k expensive so obviously going to japan is cheaper if you are spending 50k versus 5k or whatever it cost in japan
Well to be fair, we should expect brain surgery to be more expensive than child birth. If you wanted to tell that story then you should’ve just told it without comparing it to the cost of child birth because the answer to calling it cheap in comparison is…Duhhh😒😆

even with pretty decent insurance I think we were charged 10-15k for each kid, and we had two in the last two years. The crazy thing of it, was when our first was born, they put an 8k bill in the name of our daughter, so it took them 9months to bill us for it and sent it to collections because it was overdue. WELL YA, we didn't even know about it to put it on a payment plan. You billed a 1 day old kid that didn't even have a SSN yet!
they have to charge 45000$ to some dumb celebrities and influencers so the people who are charged 15k are feeling they're getting a good deal. Although in reality the hospital admins are laughing all the way to the bank and on the way back to their yaght.
@@GTX311 sadly it isnt as easy as just "adding universal health care" since the companies that are charging these absurd prices just use lobbying which is basically just legal bribing to government officials to influence policies that benefit their company while fucking over 99% of the US population out of hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars a household
Did you have any recourse for cancelling the debt? I know the common advice given when collections contacts you about a deceased families member's debt, is that you are not responsible for it unless you make the mistake of accepting it or paying for even a cent of it. Collections of course will not tell you this and may try to get you to pay anyways. In the case of the baby's debt, maybe a similar argument could be made to get them to drop it. Either way, starting off as a 1 yoe baby with bad credit already lol
Its always a good idea to ask for an itemized receipt to better review every detail of the charges. One is to make sure there are no duplicate charges and the other is to avoid being legally scammed by the hospital in general.

5 of the top 10 medical universities in the world are located in Europe, like Cambridge or Heidelberg. And if I remember correctly, Europe has much more medical universities than any other region in the world. (But don't pin me down on the last one.)
Many times cheaper, but the average american still doesn't think of this option. And not just France, many other EU countries with just as good private healthcare that will take care of you for 2-3k. And even if you give birth in the US, at this same place that charges you 50k all inclusive lets say, its 10% or less of this price if you plan in advance and not just wake up that you're about to give birth and ring the hospital. They'll LEGALLY put up these inflated prices knowing you got no other choice. That's the main problem, that they take advantage of the financially illiterate by bribing politicians to have these laws put in place that allows them to move the price up and down by 10-50x when they see fit.
When we had our kid here in the Philippines, we went to a pretty standard hospital but our son needed a few expensive tests because of heart complications. Even with all that, our bill was less than $2000 and it got slashed to roughly $800 after our RECENTLY PAID insurance kicked in. Mind you, we only paid 6 months worth of insurance, about $30.
1 month of insurance over here in America is like $600, so over here, you would have paid $3,600 for insurance, plus $2000 yearly deductible. Then you'd have to pay a couple thousand more to the hospital anyway because insurance won't pay it all.
I mean philipines per capita is like 20 times less that us so its like paying almost 40k and it got slashed to 16k but atleast u are paying for expensive stuff not the bare minimum lmao
I think that for our three kids put together we paid about $150 CAD to the hospital. Most of that was for parking, couple of sandwiches for myself in the cafeteria and $24 was for a private room which we requested with all three kids but only got charged for it once because the other two times there were none available. Yeah yeah I know, "It'S nOt ReAlLy FrEe, YoU pAy FoR iT iN tAxEs!" but you know what? I'd happily have a little bit skimmed off the top of my paycheck if it means I don't have to worry about insane out of pocket expenses. Things like having children, getting cancer and serious car accidents are life altering enough as it is, nobody should be bankrupted at the same time.
We pay for it in taxes too, it's called medicaid, but it's only for people who are under a certain income bracket. So getting married here is out of the question because you legally become the same income, so just have your gf be on medicaid with no income and it's 100% free too. even the cafeteria food. all the rooms were private for the maternity ward too, idk how people go through that in a room with other strangers.
Canadian health care sucks. My brother has been waiting 18 months for a simple ultrasound. When I was a kid I broke both arms at the same time and had to wait over 24 hours to even see a doctor. The wait times are absolutely terrible and the standard of care is determined by the federal government. Here in the US, you can literally go wherever you want and have whatever you want done. Hardly any waiting. There is give and take with both. Canada has a literal dictator controlling your thoughts via the media. You guys were the most brainwashed country in the world during covid. I had a home birth last year. It cost me $6k out of pocket and that covered ALL of my prenatal visits (I believe there were about 14), delivery, and 5 follow up visits post-birth to check on me and my son - all included, $6k out the door. Would you believe that after I had my son and submitted everything to my health insurance they wouldn't reimburse me? I reminded them that if I'd gone to a Massachusetts hospital they'd be billed approximately $40k and they'd pay it. I'm asking for a measly $6k back (I saved them money!) - this should be pennies to a large health insurance company - and I've received nothing. My son is now 14 months and I'm STILL arguing with them on this.
They have a nexus they will not give you a penny. You going to a hospital and spending 40k is more profitable to them because their profit is not just from insurance

One reason behind the high cost of healthcare in the US is that health insurance obscures the actual costs. Imagine if you grocery shopping, and there were no prices listed. When you got to checkout, the grocery store coordinated with your "food insurance company" to figure out how much to charge, which items were covered by insurance, and what you had to pay out-of-pocket. Not only does this add a additional layer of costly bureaucracy, but it makes it much harder to comparison shop since the prices are opaque. Thus no incentive to lower them. This isn't the only reason for the insane costs, but it's a major one. Let's stop thinking of healthcare as a "system" in which we are helpless pawns, and start thinking of it as an "industry" where you are the almighty customer - acting with agency. Laws need to change, but start by shopping around, asking what stuff costs beforehand, and acting bewildered when you can't get a straight answer.

@@ANonyMouse627 Certainly true for some things. But for something like a birth, we have 9 months to plan. I'm an American living overseas, and I've noticed that it's more straight forward; people here do research the prices at different hospitals, consider quality, and then decided where they want to give birth.
@@costley51 Except in the US, a birth in any hospital will run you minimum $50,000. The average person simply can't afford to pay out of pocket for a hospital visit. Things with inelastic demand like housing and healthcare do not work like toasters or laptops in a commercial market. No matter how much people shop around the price of housing and healthcare is still gonna keep increasing. A universal payer or cost controls is the only way to make healthcare accessible for everyone.
Yep absolutely crazy! My wife and I had our first last year and in December we finally make our last payment on the baby. That’s even after insurance too. People are definitely over charged by the American healthcare system.

Maybe that's been Uncle Sam's strategy all along; brainwash the masses through subtle but relentless indoctrination through media, talking heads and infiltrating any public discourse with carefully curated talking points created by paid think tanks whose sole purpose is to come up with propaganda that is effective. Those like me that still retain a portion of the critical thinking are now easier to isolate monitor , and "deal with" should we ever stand in Uncle Sam's way. Once such means of doing this is to call literally anything opposing the Neo-Liberal status quo "socialist", even in cases where it clearly is not; and because most Americans barely understand their own history let alone that of old and complex political ideologies , of how the European mindset came about as a result of thousands of years of history, wars, revolutions, philosophy, and so on. Thats the cost of US citizens paying a much lower tax rate. In countries where medical care is free/cheap, that means that they fund this medical care either through taxes, or the gov pays for it because the price of labor is very cheap Take most eastern european countries, for example. Their medical care is basically free. Why? Because their doctors get paid nothing, so its easy for the gov to step in and just pay them their very low salaries. In US, however, people have very high salaries, especially once you get to professionals of any field. Its nothing like in Europe where everyone gets paid more or less the same. No, in America a new anesthesiologist, for example, could be looking at like a $100k starting salary. Now, because America does not tax their citizens that much, the gov doesnt have the money to pay their highly paid doctors such a salary. Although America could decide to take the west european approach and just tax the heck out of everyone, and make healthcare free, but many americans are against that, as am I. I'd rather my healthcare be expensive, but my wage to be significantly higher than our lesser european brothers. This differences in incomes is what allows americans to pay these obscene medical bills... And its fair towards people who dont accrue any medical expenses
lets be real, even with the broken healthcare system, vast majority of americans are incomparably better off than almost all Europeans. Europeans have all these goodies like healthcare, paid leaves, etc. They got the full package. But they just broke as hell... Especially the middle class. You take any profession side by side, and you often see 2x or 3x the difference, even when comparing to "rich" countries like Denmark/Norway/Switzerland. My buddy recently immigrated to outskirts of Paris. He loves it. Not because they pay good, but because with his American salary he feels like a king. $10k a month is common in US even for someone just entering the field, but in France, etc, such a salary is akin to a CEO of a bank
@@artyomarty391 thats a matter of diferent economies, but majority of europe still offers a way better quality of life, you can earn alot but then if you have to spend alot aswell then the quality of life isnt that great While in europe you earn less compared, but you also pay less and end up saving more in some cases, depending on profession and countries in europe amd etc But indeed its smart to take advantage of the diference in economy, earn salary of a bigger economy and spend it on a smaller economy and you have a great quality of life, its same as someone from netherlands or norway or such earning that salary while living in a country like portugal or greece or etc

Salaries are extremely high in US especially when you compare mid-upper classes. So its hard to become rich, when you live among the rich But becoming someone in many European countries is much easier (with an American salary), as even things like having a car are often seen as a luxury. And I am not talking about eastern european countries, I mean countries like France. By the way, the only thing that costs less in western Europe compared to US, is property, and services. And this difference is not that big... Everything else from cars, to clothes, to even food and especially tobacco/alcohol, is more expensive in western europe And when comparing the two, the actual difference in incomes matters. Is it 10%? 20%? In my experience, for mid to high level professionals like IT, doctors, lawyers, professors, experienced technicians, etc. The difference is something like 100%. In other words, the American counterparts take home twice as much money Even if life in Europe is cheaper, it aint ever going to be twice as cheaper... especially not when, as I stated above, many things cost more

Here in the US we already pay out the kazoo for taxes. I'd be all for universal health care if it didn't meant increased taxes. But the problem is the government here in the US is a shitstorm and would just use it as a reason to grab 90% of your paycheck and screw you over. I personally think a easy solution that wouldn't require massive new programs to be implemented would be to just make it illegal for medical providers and insurance companies to charge more than a small percentage of profit over what the fair market value of the materials and labor costs are. That way they can only charge you at most like $20 for the rubber gloves they used, and not $2000.00 like I've seen in some cases and rip people off like crazy. But the politicians are more than likely benefiting from kickbacks with the way things work now so they have no incentive to fix it.
@@izaicslinux6961 Unfortunately, there really isn’t a way to fund universal healthcare without increasing payroll taxes. Of course, the cost of healthcare would go down dramatically, and insurance wouldn’t be necessary for a lot of people. Without insurance as a major benefit, employers would have to offer higher pay or other benefits to attract good workers. Taxes wouldn’t have to be anywhere near 90%. The only time taxes were that high was during the Great Depression and only on the super rich. They’re less than 50% in most European countries with universal healthcare, better schools, AND robust social safety nets. Personally, I’d rather pay more in taxes and none on health insurance and be guaranteed that nobody dies because they can’t afford healthcare.
The first group of charges are facility fees they charge you for the use of the equipment and drugs. The last three are charges for the doctor’s services. First the anesthesiologist who administered the anesthesia. (I did medical billing for 25 years and worked for an anesthesia practice and that charge was cheap. You are charged a set rate for every 15 minutes of care. Average charge for placing and monitoring an epidural for a normal labor is about $5000. I have seen them as high as $35,000.) The last two bills are the OB charges for delivering the baby and the application of the dilation device. But Medicaid is available to expectant mothers. All you have to do is apply. Then you won’t have a giant bill.
In Sri Lanka, at a Government hospital (which are having the most skilled doctors) would cost you absolute 0! Also, post delivery the government will run follow up clinical sessions and home care nurses again entirely FREE! :)
A family friend of mine just had a baby and her child needed to stay in the NICU for some days or weeks, and her overall bill was about $3 million. That’s not an exaggeration - thank goodness she has insurance.
you might as well hire a full time doctor and a team of nurses for the year, plus purchase all the needed equipment for that amount... and build a nice house with the left over money for that bill
@kyle18934 that's not bad idea. Groups of expecting mums could actually do that and split the cost. Especially, if they are expecting in different months etc.. they wouldn't be time restricted either
generally speaking, any intensive care unit for an adult will cost at around $5k+ per day of stay, I would imagine more for a child. This is just for staying, without any surgeries. Some facilities it might be 5k, some 10, some 30, but usually its 5-10k But this isnt the market price. This is what the hospital will bill you, if you werent insured. The market price for this stay is what the insurance company ends up paying, and its usually 10-50 times less. In this case probably around 200k
In Britain its not only all medical care is free but they will also give you a whole heap of things for free to get you started. Not to mention all the after support you can also get which is again all free.
True. its just that lets be real, who wants to live in Britain with its low opportunities and low salaries? You might have better freebies, but I think most people would just choose the overall higher incomes, and income opportunities, that you see in the US
What's funny, is if you have insurance and these bills get forwarded to the insurance company the insurance company can go "hell no... that's outrageous" and the hospital will go "oh... ok =(... " and change the charge rate to 1/10th of the original rate. It's only as an individual that you are powerless and the hospital will destroy you.
That baby better become the president wtf!. They charged me 880 bucks at the emergency making me sit and wait 2 hours just to say I have wax build up in my ear. Hospitals are a joke.
Pro tip: Don't just accept the bill and pay! Search-up medical-bill negotiators/advocates, since they negotiate significant discounts (even more than half of the bill off!), for a fraction of the original bill.
this. I've negotiated hundreds of bills back like 5 years ago. We were a personal injury law firm, but part of our work involved helping clients without insurance and getting the medical providers reduce costs. Prices can be reduced by about 20-30% with almost no negotiations. Like, you just write a letter asking nicely, and almost all providers will comply. If you want over 50%, takes a bit more back and forth Sometimes the reductions would go as much as 98%. Really depends on a case by case basis of the person you're dealing with. The lawyer I worked for was extremely persisten and wouldnt take no for an answer and would drag everything out for every additional dollar, so the reductions usually ended up, on average, 60%, although we aimed at around 80% But yeah, I advise everyone to first try to reduce it themselves, or get a professional. I would bet that if I had 10 cases in front of me right now, and I sent a template letter to all these 10 medical providers of different clients, asking for a 40% reduction, at least half of them would get instantly approved for at least a 25% reduction
@@theguyinurcloset69420 That depends on the company. Those I read about charge a percentage of the original bill, but I was surprised that some charge by the work-hour. But hey, that's still probably less than the 20-50% price-cut they report to provide.
In India, the State governments will give the mother $10 to $70 (in Kerala) for having delivery in Government Hospitals. Any kind of treatments are free of charge too. If you go to Private Hospitals, it is different, they will charge $500 upwards for child delivery. They also bill ridiculous items as shown in this video.
Couple years before covid struck, a dental office in California wanted to charge me 13.5K for replacing front 2 teeth with implants. I just ran away as fast as I could.
Same thing happened to my wife and I and almost ran to either Canada or Mexico to go deliver the baby, but we had a premie baby so that plan went out the window and paid over 40k
That's insane. We did a home water birth for $3K with a certified midwife in 2020. Kid popped out in 10 min from full dilation just like our last one. No drugs and very minimal pain. We suggest hypno-birthing as well. Best advice is to get your general health and mentality on track before having a child and things should go smoothly. We are in the western US btw.
The funny thing is that people used to do this just at home. For free. Ironically the infant mortality rate for the US is pretty crap for such obscenely expensive costs.
Well playing devil's advocate, I think that it wasn't your first kid is key. I've heard plenty of stories about a woman's first-born child being an extremely difficult and arduous process. The first kid she was in labor for easily 24+ hours. Second kid she was in labor for a few hours and the kid came out in no time.
@@bonvoyage9695Yes they can. They can stop excessive bleeding, resuscitate you or your baby, perform an emergency C section if the baby is stuck and/or your health becomes critical, lower dangerous blood pressure spikes, etc. If you have excessive bleeding at home, you’d better hope the ambulance can get you to the hospital in time. Modern C sections are the main reason why childbirth is no longer the leading cause of death of young women in most of the world.
@@-Subtle-dude its the natural way, the f u talkin about...when there was no doctors or amything ppl always had babies, u think nature is dumb. To this day some ppl give birth on the streets and they're fine.
My wife has had multiple surgeries to fuse vertebrae in her spine or remove bits of damaged disks, every time it's 12 to 15k. Basically for the last 8 years I've made 10 grand less each year just to cover injuries that affect her life long. Pretty scummy considering everything has increased so wildly in price, my "pocket spending money" is less now than when I started working back in 2007 making 7 an hour lol...
get a divorce and have her get on medicaid, then claim HoH on your taxes and claim her as a dependent. Less taxes, more healthcare. Work the system, don't let the system work you.
If you have insurance, the total bill is doubled that amount because they know the insurance company will pay, and you still might have to shell out couple hundred dollars. It's a vicious cycle. Hospitals get away with inflated prices, and insurance get away with ever-increasing premium because of "higher cost of medical care." The system is broken.
@@Jambuc829 What are you grading a book report? Go find out the cost of a medical procedure with paying 100% cash vs insurance coverage. You'll be surprised.
@@diegolara4202 So you are telling me if I ask the provider for the price of the service then call my insurance company I'd get a straight answer?! BS! Most providers would refuse to provide upfront cost of a procedure because it is designed to be as murky as possible.
@@diegolara4202 That doesn't make any sense. Hospitals are a business and as a business they would just refuse to take insurance money if it were less that's not how insurance works. Insurance covers the cost for you.
There's a rule that says after a certain amount of time you don't have to pay for your medical bill depending on your state but if this happens and you never pay the bill then goes to collections. When the bill goes to collections they will try to collect it from you and if you still refuse to pay then eventually it could hurt your credit score.
@@diegolara4202 They definitely do coming from someone who's credit is currently being effected by medical debt. But it has to be over $500 and it cant hit your credit for at least a year to give you time setup a payment plan. Google it. They can even garnish your wages. Please don't tell people they don't have to pay medical debt because someone might believe you and get royally screwed over because of it.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands: "The national maximum rate for an outpatient birth without medical indication or a birth in a birth center is €761.85. This means that after the reimbursement from basic insurance of €236, you will pay a maximum of €525.85 personal contribution for the delivery itself with a contracted care provider." You can have 90 babies minus a few fingers on the last one for the same amount of money.
This is why you always read medical bills. Make sure you're not getting charged for something that makes no sense. Also make sure you have an idea if it makes no sense. That can actually be complicated.
“Oh cmon. It’s one of life’s greatest joys! Having a baby is going to be worth it! Trust me!” Me: *I show the entire family this* …..”w-well it um..it gets better with age!!”
