COST OF LIVING IN CHILE | How much does it cost to live in Chile? 

Chile is indeed expensive but at the same time there are a few very important things that this country offers, things that you cannot find in the US. One of them is the health care, many would say that public healthcare here in chile is not good but most people who complains about it are Chilean (yes, chilean people do not understand how much they have compared to other countries) but you have so many options that are way, way cheaper than the healthcare in the US and the people that work here are really good. Another thing is the education, the US has a very poor educational system where a massive amount of information and knowledge doesn't even exist, for example my fiancee who is an american did not knew anything about basic Biology or History and she's an engineer, meanwhile our basic education here in Chile is way better than what you get in the US (yes the system in Chile is not perfect and needs a lot of improvements and investment fromt he Goverment) especially because there is a lot of misinformation and poor incentive to learn about their own history. So far the most expensive place to live is Santiago and a few other cities here in Chile but some of the benefits that you get here are kinda worth the money, with that being said I do agree that we need a change, mostly regarding salaries and cost of life but that's for another day because it is something very political and we all know how people react with that topic. We live here a lot cheaper than we ever could in the former USA. Living on our little farm with two houses! Our household of 3 live on less than $1,000usd a month. How? We have lower taxes. No Property Tax is a big one. The importation tax is 26% total. That is the 19% and then they add fees and other FEES to total 26%. Our medical care is almost ZERO. We grow most of our food. We have no debt. Jon is spot on with all of his estimates. We live a different life out in the country so we have different costs and we are able to make or do a lot more for ourselves than people in the city. We do not go out to eat we make our own food and meals and it is really really healthy and cheap. It also tastes good. With the covid things have become inflated through out the whole world and Chile is no different. Jon we now have a BANKING DEAL available to members of our group that lets people open a bank account in the USA and bring that money to Chile very cheaply. Love the video. Thanks. Jim in Chile

Just recently discovered your Channel. Very honest display of Chile in all aspects. felicidades. I moved from Germany to Chile in 2008.

It’s actually way cheaper than my cost of living now. I live in central florida and the prices have drastically gone up since Covid. A 2 bedroom used to be $1100 but is now $1800 for that same 2 bedroom. During Covid a lot of people migrated to FL which caused a large increase in the housing price. I’m paying $2300 a month just for rent and that does include my other expenses. I’m considering selling all my things and just traveling like I have always wanted to. Losing so me people these last couple of years made me realize how short life is and to just follow your heart. I really appreciate this video for showing me how obtainable living abroad is 🥰

You have a mistake on your appreciation of the 19% tax on imports. Chilean goods also pay that 19%, and is called the value added tax. Tariffs on imports are close to 0%, so it does not account to explain differences in prices on imported goods.

I lived near downtown Los Angeles, CA, for seven years before moving down to Chile in late 2015, and I can tell you that the cost of living here is substantially lower than what I was paying before (even with subsidized rent in LA). I've never lived in Santiago but I've lived in both Valdivia and now Villarrica and the latter is a cheaper place to live. For example, you can find a spacious, high quality 3 bdrm, 2 bath apartment in a gated community by the river with really nice amenities for 450,000 CLP a month plus gastos comunes (about 70,000 CLP). That's around $720 USD a month, and you can find houses to rent here for the same price or cheaper. I have a daughter who attends a private school for 210,000 CLP a month (5 hours per day, five days a week during non-quarantine stages), which is around $290 USD. One thing that is considerably more expensive here than when I lived in CA is electricity, especially during the winter months.

Those still look like pretty good costs. And in my limited view Chile is the best over all place in South America.

I have been living in the states for over 10 years (I’m from Chile 🇨🇱 Colchagua near by Santa Cruz). It is definitely more expensive to live here but at the same time the economy is much more stable, the job opportunities are better. It also depends a lot on the state you live in, when I lived in Chile (especially in small regions it was not that expensive at all) however Santiago is expensive compared to other regions.

Of course when I lived there MANY years ago(gringo here), I mostly bought food in the suburbs where I lived at first. Meat From the Butcher was a Great price by the lb. Also, Pan from a Pan store(unless it said No HAY PAN). I got alot of veggies, fruits(didnt eat strawberries for fear of Typhoid back then) and wow, did I ever have a lot of Yogurts and Ice creams from the corner store. The costs were low. I didnt have a car. I used a collectivo and Bus. When I lived in the centro, like you, I still got veggies and fruit from the central market. I lived close to "La Moneda" I loved using the subway. It was cheap, but I have no idea how much now. When I lived in the centro, they built a Dunkin Donuts , so THAT was great. I cant imaginge the cost of Gas there. It was high, but I had no car. Here in Chile, The minimum/base salary is = 326.500 CLP/ 450 USD. Almost 1 Million of Chilean workers live/survive with the base salary. 70% of all the Chilean workers live/survive with less than 550.000 - 600.000 CLP / 850 USD.

I'm a Chilean living in the US and I think Chile is really expensive. The main reason is that salaries are low and the minimum wage is ridiculous. They don't pay people per hour which makes it impossible to study and work. Here in the US salaries are higher, cars are cheaper and houses will depend on the state you live in.

nice bit of information..my wife Barbara is from Chile and our plan is to retire there in about 6-7 years time. we do not require the added cost for housing though as my wife has her duplex in La Serena,which is the perfect gateway to the clear skies of the Atacama and Valle del Elqui.

En 2018 visitamos NYC nos alojamos en Brooklyn por Airbnb, el alojamiento por noche por 4 personas menos de 50 mil, las cenas muy abundantes por un equivalente a 6mil por persona. Lo mas caro era las entradas a las centros típico de vistas. En general alojamiento, comida y traslado muy barato, de hecho pensabamoa que USA estaba barato, pero no es así Chile es muy caro.

Hi Jon, thank you very much for this video. Lately I find myself thinking about returning to Chile although Santiago has never been on my radar, my preferences would be Arica, Iquique or La Serena. Currently, here in Calgary I pay CAD $1400 for a tiny two-bed/1 bath apartment combined with my food & transport costs put me over the $2,000/month. Here in Calgary we pay a premium on all fruits & vegetables brought in from either BC or ON, but more so if brought from US or further afield. A bag of 6 apples goes for $4.99, a dozen eggs for $5; butter for $5 or 6/kg; milk for $5.25 for a 2L bottle + $0.25 recycling deposit; loaf of sliced bread for $3.99; iceberg lettuce $3.00/head and so on, I think you get the gist. Interesting to hear how expensive it is to live Chile. I guess for us in Australia, anywhere else is cheaper or just about. The median price of a free standing home in Australia is AUD$936,000 and rents are about AUD$600-700 on average for a rundown flat per week. On average a family of would probably spend around $500 bucks a week and that’s on the cheaper side. I could go on but so don’t want bore anyone 😁. Australia is extremely expensive, and it’s sad to see a country that once was proud to treat everyone the same is now making the gap between rich and poor much wider. Great video once again Jon. Wow. We spent around $400 a week on groceries each week for a family of 6. I live in Florida USA. Our Mortgage is $1,600 for a 3 bed house and that’s cheap compare to what others pay. My electric bill is around $300. Water/utilities $130. I won’t mention our car insurance bill from adding our son to the policy. Lol I personally think it’s very expensive here. I don’t think it’s that bad in other States but the cost of living in South Florida is way high.

I just can not believe what you are saying. As a Chilean living in Germany I hate Chile even more than before. The cost of life there is simply ridiculous compared to the incomes of the people. I don't really know how much money you earn or what is your profession, but I was born in Santiago in a normal family (with normal I mean "poor, not professionals", and yes that is "normal" for us). My father used to earn around 400.000 pesos and with this budget he has to take care of the family (we are 4). My mother grew my sister and me up and started working when we were already teenagers, so she could make sure we were going to school, helped us with homework and, on other words, she wanted to protect us from bad influences because we lived in a not good neighborhood. (Is really sad having to explain all this context to make you able to understand ) this is why in Chile is so hard to come out from poverty. If you want to study you have to pay because public schools s*cks and you will end surrounded by future criminals and have no future. Have you ever asked yourself why people live until 3 generations in the same house? Because they can not afford to pay a rent alone, people has to stay together to make a bigger income and face the crazy cost of life- necessary products as food, clothes, hygiene, health and education (yes , for us it is a product). Cost of life can be cheap for you, but for most of us is really, really hard to survive. In Germany the cost of life is exactly the same as in Chile, but do you know the difference? Here, working as an unqualified assistant I earn 3 times what I earned in Chile as a professional. SO NO, YOU CAN NOT SAY CHILE IS CHEAP, because probably you are not earning 400.000 pro month, so you don't know the reality of most of the chileans.

I'm always interested to know the differences as well as similarities in prices and services. I was surprised how expensive real estate was in the south of Chile but goodness, it's so spectacularly beautiful there! I was surprised though, considering the high price of gas, how much cheaper taxis were compared to the U.S. I was wondering in future videos re: prices, if you might perhaps illustrate what insurance costs run, both car and health. Also, perhaps the most confusing thing to me is regarding money in Chile, UF versus Chilean peso. I've been reading about this in relation to rentals and real estate purchases but I don't understand why there are two monetary systems. Thank you!

Dude, you got it wrong on the import taxes. That 19% you mention is IVA and it applies to local produce as well. Import taxes are low in Chile do to the many free trade agreements signed.

Unfortunately I do not think travel is that cheap here 🤣 Maybe compared to the US travel is cheap, but I am very discouraged to travel around Chile when I realize I could take trips to other countries in South America for the same price or even cheaper. I lived in the States for a time and yes, it's a lot more expensive than Chile, but I think it's because people earn more compare to a regular chilean salary. In Chile the average amount of your monthly salary it is way to different from the average of a salary in the States. Most of people in Chile do not spend that much money on a rent, but compare to a cheap rent lease in the State, chilean rent it's for sure way to cheaper. The U.S. might be a rich country; boasting more millionaires than any other country in the world but that's a small percentage of people compared to the rest of American citizens. In general, people in the U.S. are struggling to make ends meet. People in Chile, can have a much better quality of life.

Hi Jon, thanks for sharing your budget of the cost of living in Chile, being the head of a family we've struggled each month to balance our ultra low budget, there are few things wich we just cannot afford like own car or international travel. Need not say how the pandemic is going to aggraviate Chilean people's livelihood and the job losses. How government shall take necessary arrangements to relieve stress on family budget and keep people on the jobs.

Vivo en Canada y eso muy similar. En Chile: autos caros, comida cara, becina cara, arriendo baratos o similares (depende del luagar), transporte público en general mejor, Salud mejor calidad. En canada : autos a precio Zofri, bencina barata, comida más barato o igual que en Chile, salud compleja (muy dificil de conseguir especialista).

el precio de las cosas importadas va a depender si chile tiene un tratado comercial con ese pais en todo caso debes pagar el arancel de inportacion que es del 10% + el iva que es del 19% por eso muchas cosas que en otro pais que produce esas cosas como electronicos es mas barato

Creo que el costo de Vida de un país depende de tus ingresos. Por ejemplo en Chile trabajaba como profesional y mi costo de vida era muy alto, comparado con mis ingresos. Ahora vivo en Nueva Zelanda, donde el costo de Vida, aparentemente, es más alto que el de Chile, pero los salarios son infinitamente mejores. Por lo que creo que Chile es carísimo, sobre todo si incluyes en tu presupuesto educación y salud.

19% is VAT not an import tax. You can "get it back" if you have a formal business operation, even if it is a small one.

You should talk about salaries in Chile if you can. Also if you could talk about take overs in Chile, "tomas", it seems to a be a growing trend there. We had two properties taken over. One was recovered after expensive lawyers and five years of fighting. Chile is nice but it has its problems. The other property who knows how long it will take to get it back. life is very expensive here in Paris. A nice three bedroom (120 M2) apartments in a nice area of downtown Paris rent for about $66,000 a year. I believe Chilean cherries (the big kind) sell for $40 a kilo. The American school costs 50k a year and transportation to a from the school, 20k.

The main issue on the car cost is not the price of buying a car, because is really similar to the US, maybe 5% more expensive, the maintenaince price is the one you have to be worried, also the gas prices, at least in almost every state is half of the price than Chile

Hi Jon!. Argentina: $ 6.000 , Chile: $ 1.400, Perú.: $ 622. Ese es el precio de la leche evaporada ( misma marca, peruana). Hace mucho tiempo quería cocinar la salsa a la huancaína de nuestros hermanos peruanos. La leche evaporada es uno de los ingredientes. La semana pasada la hice por primera vez. Pues bien, vi la receta en un canal argentino de YT que sigo, a veces. El cocinero se quejaba de lo caro que costaba ese producto en Argentina e indicaba lo que le costó (el video es de hace unos 10 días). Y eso da una idea de lo mucho que pueden variar los precios entre países. Impuestos, demanda y cosas así. Ah!, El precio en Perú lo obtuve entrando a una página web de un supermercado peruano. Y compré la leche evaporada en la Vega Central de Santiago. Hice mi propio 'Big Mac Index' XD. PD: la salsa me quedó riquísima XD. Saludos.

It all depends how much you make in Chile. Ganar en USA 🇺🇸 es diferente a la cantidad que uno pagaría en chile. Pero tu video nos da una buena idea como es en Chile 🇨🇱
