Using innovative filming techniques, including micro-drones and underwater film, the amazing story is told from beginning to end. The film was made possible through the producers' unparalleled access to survivors, rescue units, and the highest Italian coast guard and fire brigade authorities as well as the islanders who rescued the survivors so they could live to tell their stories.
Congratulations to all the persons who did this documentary and, off course, all the staff who worked so hard with the boat. RIP to the 32 who died in this terrible tragedy. 👏👏👏
RIP to the people who lost their lives. This second part was interesting because I hadn’t seen much about the actual salvage operation of removing the ship and the relationships that the Giglio residents formed with the oil removers. Very well done and RIP to the people who lost their lives. Just like the Titan submersible tragedy, the Costa Concordia tragedy should NOT have happened in this century.
Although not the same mode of transportation....could you imagine the Wright Brothers appearing today and being asked to go inside of a new Boeing 747 and flying and they say "sure", until they walk into the cockpit and have hundreds of buttons, switches, breakers, controls. If you had to chose between piloting a 747 or piloting a Cruise Vessel, which would you choose?
I have watched multiple documentaries on the Costa Concordia, yet this is the first time I have heard about the brave and heroic contribution of Deputy Mayor Mario Pellegrini Giglio in saving passengers from what would have been certain death. Little impresses me in this world. I doubt I would do what he did. I'm truly impressed.
Belize central america I'm from and Mario Pellegrini is a hero!! RIP to those who died on the Costa Concordia!! Thanks to the Italian authorities and locals who helped the survivors!!✌🏽🙏🌎💯🇧🇿🇮🇹
Time to binge on this great episode I knew the other one was too short. Sorry for the many lives lost being a cruiser myself it is a scary thought to be in a situation like this
There were only 3 people lost and all bodies were recovered eventually. The gentleman who was interviewed at the being , the Deputy Mayor went onto the ship to help with the evacuation. His mother had been killed when a ferry had sunk when he was young.
All the Captain had to do was stay on the course that was already charted to avoid this tragedy. He makes me feel like he was showing off with that ship of the biggest he's probably ever piloted. It's like trying to drive a limo but you've only driven a compact car. He knew he was in trouble when he approached and then the last minute turn did that ship in. I don't know if kicking it in reverse woulda helped but he didn't try anything. Lastly, he got the hell outta there! Damn the passengers!! Every man, woman and child fend for yourselves. They were totally oblivious of the goings-on with their lives. I think lawsuits should be handed down by all who were affected by this. That cruise line should be held liable for everything. That Captain refused a direct order from his Superior and jumped ship. Prison is still too easy for him. He can tell his story about how he sunk a ship with thousands of people on board but make it sound like a fairytale. May God continue to rest the souls of the people who parrished in this mess.
The Captain only got 16 years, manslaughter, causing a disaster, and abandoning ship. This is according to Wikipedia. He appealed twice and was denied both times.
Shame on the Captain for giving false information nor proper instructions and abandoning the ship leaving passengers and staff to fend for themselves, 16 years was not enough. RIP to all those people that lost their life taken from this preventable tragedy 😢🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤😢
Watched within 1hrs of release,, really informative documentry by freedocumentary & its team....Lott's of knowledge.... good job...love from Guwahati City, Assam, India 🌻🌹🇮🇳
Its 2022, what all ended up happening to the captain etc..very excruciating to hear loved ones being treated so poorly after losing their loved ones in this avoidable disaster...and italy is beautiful , the scenery is breathtaking there
As of July 2021: The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter in 2016 and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Francesco Schettino was given 10 years for multiple manslaughters, 5 years for causing a shipwreck, and 1 year for abandoning the passengers at the time of the sinking.
8:02 Life raft not supposed to open automatically, unless ship gone under water completely and pulled around 30 meters of painter line of the raft container. This is how it inflates automatically. What we see is life rafts just floating on the surface still attached to the ship. If crew were trained properly, they would know what to do with them.
Unfathomable that this would happen so recently. So many things were done wrong. What I don't understand is why Costa wasn't held financially responsible for all of the millions it must have cost for rescue efforts, for the engineering costs to resurface the ship, to move and salvage it, etc. Even if the captain and his crew were idiots, the company should still be responsible. Just like parents are ultimately responsible for the repercussions incurred by their children's missteps. This is just tragic . . . everything about it. My prayers are with those who have to live the rest of their lives experiencing this loss.
If you're going blame to guy at the top, why not go all the way to the top? Also, the captain did all he could. I'm glad he went on a lifeboat! In fact, everyone did what he or she could.
“the captain did all he could?!” Did you actually watch this documentary??? Omg! The captain lied repeatedly that night. He lied to the Coast Guard and prolonged a much needed rescue from them. He lied to the passengers by telling them it was just “a blackout.” Then he lied to HIS commanding officer by saying he was “coordinating a rescue”- when in reality, he was in a lifeboat. This entire catastrophe was due to his arrogant need to show off with a completely unnecessary stunt. And his lies and cowardly behavior cost people their lives. You’re either a friend or relative of this man’s to say something so ridiculous!
I'm sure the captain's life is in the * crapper. How can you blame all this on just one person? That's madness! You all share the responsibility, as soon as you step foot on such a vessel. From the captain to the bus-boy!
I have a question that has gone unanswered on other "Concordia" posts on RU-vid. I've been on over a dozen cruises. Every port we have visited REQUIRE "Pilots" to be on the bridge for coming in and out of ports as they know of and are constantly updated on the changing seabed around the port. These Pilots usually don't disembark the ship until well offshore. Why was there no "Pilot" onboard to correct this unqualified Captain when leaving Giglio?
Because the Costa Concordia did leave from a different port 2 hours prior, not from this little island where they eventually crashed into. In other words, they were already on the open sea.

When salvaging takes place do they just give them the ship and it’s contents to pay for salvaging, or does the owner get any items of true value then leaves the rest to pay for the salvage job. There is a lot of money in salvaging all that steel etc.
@@carlsaganlives5112 half the ship was not under water and in excellent condition. The steel itself was worth a lot. I just wonder what they do wiTh the items the passengers left behind, Their wallets, jewelry etc.
it was deliberate to prove that there wasnt any contigency plan in any emergency....the total failure of the port authority....they should be arrested for failure of duty
This seems quite similar to the HMHS Britannic. Both were white ships, ended up landing on the starboard side, and had about the same number of deaths.
Does anyone know if they had muster stations and practice when they first sailed? If you are a pilot or air controller they all must speak English, why not make the ships navigational etc crew all speak the same language? They had a failure with understanding commands as well.
