The crashing of the Costa Concordia is one of history's worst cruise disasters, with 32 lives lost. With 4890 passengers on board including the crew, it stands as one of the biggest rescue missions in history. Just how did they manage to get the majority of people safely off of the cruise, and what happened to the 32 people whose lives were tragically lost? This documentary takes a deep dive into the rescue and salvage of the Costa Concordia.

It's so heartbreaking that people lost their lives. Seeing the mother of the violinist who lost his life talk about her beloved son was the saddest thing to watch. It was beyond disrespectful for the captain's mistress to claim she died twice after her court testimony. RIP to all lost souls about the CC.❤🌹🎻

The Italian coastguard and salvage crews are highly trained while the coastguard helped saved hundreds of lives with superb efficiency and skilled training, the ship salvage team with their lightning quick efficiency superb skills professional training and Advanced equipment/technology managed to avert not only a ecological disaster that would have repercussions for years or centuries to come but the destruction of the islands purity & beauty by removing the toxic chemicals such as oils/fuels from the ships engines for example from the islands waters as much as they can. Kudos to the Italian coastguard & the ship salvage team for doing a superb job

While I think the old saying “a captain goes down with his ship” a bit…suicidal/extreme. I think he needs to be one of the last ones off! Or at least stay on and help people evacuate as long as humanly possible. Another famous example is the Oceanus. There was a malfunction, the ship taking on water, and the crew basically abandoned the guest!! It was the entertainment group, including a musician and magician who took freaking charge, called a mayday, and organized the rescue!! In fact, when they saw the Captain try and climb into a lift raft, they pulled him out by his belt. The SOB was completely useless. The entertainment crew helped get everyone off, and were one of the last ones off (like 3-4 last one off, followed by the rescue helicopter crews). The musician and magician was in the Helicopter and saw the Oceanus give up her ghost and sink into the sea a few minuets after the last person got off. No one died on the Oceanus because of the entertainment crew, the officers were is hot water on the other hand! Sometimes shit happens, the Captain needs to help and be one of the last people off. On a big ship, with multiple different languages, confusion if bound to happen, and a few lives lost. Sadly. But the Captain NEEDS to help till the last second, be there as long as humanly possible.

reminds me of the incompetent coward from the Sewol Ferry in South Korea that capsized. The only survivors were the ones who didn't believe in the nonsense of the captain. More than 300 passengers died and most of them were students on a trip.
@emmag1754
@emmag1754 Год назад
That’s quite literally what the term “captain goes down with the ship means” the maritime rule that a captain is ultimately responsible for all on board and must ensure they all evacuate safely or die trying which sparked the saying. Just how coast guards have a saying that the job requires they go out, but doesn’t require they come back in

You are absolutely correct. I am a truck driver and I have many people's lives in my hands daily, so if I were to drive with I was drinking it could cause the injury or deaths of many people. My company does background checks, random drug testing, and the Department of Transportation requires physician certificates every 1-2 years with drug testing. To place 5,000 people into the care of one man (or woman) there should be MULTIPLE safety factors taken to make sure that person is responsible, caring, has an actual conscience, and takes his role with all seriousness. For Costa (a subsidiary of Carnival) to entrust that man to take his role seriously is kind of upsetting.

It's sad to lose just one life in a disaster like this. But I am shocked that only 32 people died out of well over 4000 people on board. The captain should have been one of those left in the water, that's for sure. I can't help but think about how much worse this would have been had it happened in colder waters or further from shore. It was a blessing that the Coast Guard and the island people were so diligent and that all these factors came together to save all those people. Damn shame of a mess left behind though.

My heart goes out to the families of those who were lost in this absolutely ridiculous tragedy. There's no possible reason why this even happened other than carelessness and ignorance. The captain and his officers who knew better deserved the sentences that they were given. Francesco Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in this disaster along with his desertion of his passengers and he more than deserves that. Btw, Costa Cruises is owned by Carnival Cruises, they should've known better than to hire such an ignorant captain for such a large and expensive cruise ship.

My sister in law used to work for Crystal Cruises. Just learned today one of their flagships is stuck in Bimini Bahamas just 50 miles from here in Miami because the cruise line owes over $4 million in fuel bills. If the ship enters US waters it will be seized by US authorities until the bill is paid. The cruise line put the passengers on small ferries back to Miami which was a terrible rough 3 hour ride.

There's an old saying on the high seas, "The Captain goes down with his ship." This is not a cliché, nor do I think that it's absolute - it highlights the Captain's role in case of an emergency, one in which a goodly Captain makes absolutely certain that he has done everything in his power to see everyone else on his ship to safety before giving any thought to his own survival. In a "perfect" incident, the Captain would make it to safety after every other crewmember and passenger, but if he dies in the attempt to save lives, then that is his legacy, and what better legacy can a human being have?
@DANIELLE_BREANNA_LACY
@DANIELLE_BREANNA_LACY 8 месяцев назад
Another great legacy a captain can have is wide praise. A true captain not only cares about and takes responsibility for everyone on board his ship, but he does for everyone on board ships near his that are in distress too and does everything he can to reach those ships as quickly as possible in order to help them. I’m sure if Francesco Schettino knew and understood that completely, he wouldn’t have thought that just because he was no longer on the ship didn’t mean those still on board were no longer his responsibility.

I'd love to see a documentary where, in a emergency situation, a captain and crew rise to the occasion and do a great job. Maybe that isn't interesting enough to make a documentary or maybe it doesn't happen? Seems like all of these modern ship disasters have crews that are totally incompetent and usually criminally neglectful in their duties.

The Andrea Doria had a pretty good response by both captains involved, if you type Andrea Doria sinking in the search there's a documentary from the History Channel (posted by Titanic Films by Mark)

the 2 Korean couples slept through the impact... can you imagine you on a ship & not hearing alarm and waking up in that... they could of drowned not having a CLUE what happened.....and captain skiteno deserves life in jail for abandoning ship knowing all his was going on.

What makes me particularly angry and confused at the same time is the fact they waited ONE HOUR to start the evacuation! When in fact after hitting the rocks they should have KNOWN the cruise was DONE! Even if they could have somehow stabilized the ship, they clearly would not have been able to continue the cruise in any way. So the IDIOT captain should have started the evacuation procedure immediately! That could have saved most lives, and made it all a lot easier. The fact they ordered the passengers to go back to their cabin is INSANE! Obviously the captain was not properly equipped for his job, and narcissism played a major role in both the cause of the accident and how it played out. But we also need to blame the cruise operator for allowing unqualified personnel on the ship and especially on the bridge. The fact the helmsman didn’t even properly understand English is INSANE! The fact that children in this instance clearly knew better what was going on and what to do says a lot about the failure of adults! We can learn that we should sometimes allow fear to drive us more.

Quite a sight, watching a small army of U.S. Marshals seizing a Carnival Lines cruise ship. The captain of the Costa Concordia should spend the rest of his life in an Italian prison, and the parent company which owns the vessel, should be forbidden to dock its ships at U.S. ports.

i wonder why they didnt just leave the ship there, without the oil it wouldnt pose much of a threat to the system anyway and that salvage must have been pretty dang expensive
