IN WHICH our intrepid recreatrix explores some more 18th century history and makes a dressing gown (not actually a banyan, sorry about that) from an old IKEA duvet cover. Literally the most comfortable item of clothing I own.

Just lovely. Happy lounging. Banyans, for all their problematic history, are the perfect balance of elegance and comfort. Your fabric looks appropriately chintzy, in the nicest possible way. I watched your shift video last year and followed the link to Snappy Dragon's banyan. I decided it would be the perfect quick and easy project using a fancy bolt-end I picked up years ago (cotton-silk blend, semi-sheer with a lovely shadow stripe). My quick and easy projects never are quick and easy, though; the fabric was too sheer and delicate to wear unlined, and it was so shifty that it took me about three attempts and weeks of leaving it to hang before I could get the hems to match up well enough to attach the lining. Now that it's made, I love it, but I don't think I've ever been more frustrated. Only the knowledge of that fabric's original retail price prevented me from throwing the whole thing in the bin. I have an old blanket soaking in my bath tub as I type. Tomorrow I will dye it, and then I plan to make a winter version.

Haha! We're all different! i discovered i like a twin duvet on a queen bed because it fits perfectly on top with no overhang. I nice flat sheet as a bottom sheet with hospital corners and it is the easiest bed to make. If sharing, then two twin duvets and everyone gets their own.

Banyans are great! I made kind of mashup banyan/wrapper thing last year, and it has served me so well! I use it to throw on over my nightie when people come over but I can’t be bothered getting changed- which is rather a lot, actually. I have a lot of disability care workers, cleaners and deliveries coming into my house, and I wear pyjamas (usually a shift) unless I’m leaving the house, given how much time I spend in bed. I made mine out of some old sheets that belonged to my great grandmother. I gave extra room between the shoulder and neck while cutting, so I could pleat from front waist to back waist over the shoulder. Which means when I tighten it (I do use a simple bathrobe type of tie), it gives a shape very similar to an 1860s wrapper. Very swishy!

I had no idea a banyan was such a simple construction. Hmmmmm. My Sunday loungewear is a medieval overgown made of quilting cotton with Superman vintage imagery on it.

That is so amazing. Love the camouflage aspect, I could see getting much use out of that. I also had a *smack my palm to the middle of my forehead* kind of moment when you showed making a patch with the four corners inside. That is so much easier and neater than trying to bring in the edges and then put the patch on. A brilliant tip. The dressing gown looks wonderful and cozy. I think that Bran definitely approves. Thanks for sharing another lovely project.

Wow, so you don't need fancy fabric to make some historical clothing. Some fabric can be thrifted, or you can use sheets/duvets. That is so cool
@OpusElenae
@OpusElenae 3 года назад
One of the reasons we have so comparatively few pieces of lower class clothing is because they were made and remade and remade until they wore out. Reusing cloth is super historical!

Hahaha when Bran jumped up on your lap at the end it was like he was going, “Yes, I approve of this thing you made me.” XD Hmmm for the giveaway… a housewife maybe? My pajamas/loungewear are the same tank tops and leggings/bike shorts I wear under my outer clothes, or I’ll wear fun graphic tees instead of tanks (that also double as my causal wear tops).

I have been seeing videos about banyans for a while now, Snappy Dragon's was one of them, and when I saw yours, I decided it was time! I also have an unused ikea queen sized duvet cover, we switched to King-sized blankets, white with black flowers. I decided to use a teal linen trim, scrap box for the win! All I have left to do is button holes/buttons and the hem. Having button anxiety and I don't have enough linen for the hem. Do you think I could just finish it with a hemming foot, or would bias tape be neater?
@OpusElenae
@OpusElenae Год назад
Yesss do it! You could totally skip the hem and it will look finished; my Viking coat still doesn’t have hem trim.

Any sort of European historical dress is fraught with these sorts of issues, from the materials, to the styles, Europeans were experts at stealing all of the things. It is so important that we bring these things up, even as we recreate the amazing things they came up with by mashing all of the things together.

I don't understand how banyans are labelled as problematic because of how the base cloth was originally produced. I feel that slavery, and England's mentality of make the world British and their dominance of other countries and cultures abhorrent, I do not understand how the particular items of clothing, cloth and fashion can be held accountable or responsible for the horrors being perpetrated by people. And we are hundreds of years removed from the wrongs done by previous generations. Sew the banyan and enjoy lounging comfortably.

Because those dynamics informed and are still perpetuated today. Acknowledging the foundations of why things are the way they are is the first step in dismantling those oppressive systems.
