The Couch’s spadefoot toad ranges throughout the US southwest and into northern Mexico in the arid desert. They are excellent diggers due to spade/tiny shovel on their back feet. This ability is very important as they burrow to survive dry conditions. During the times of the year they are active, they are usually nocturnal, coming out to hunt and breed at night time. These toads thrive in dry habitats due to some amazing adaptations. They can spend up to 10 months underground in burrows avoiding the heat and waiting for vibrations from storms to emerge and find a mate. Use sheep-like calls to find mate and lay up to 3,000 eggs in shallow pools formed from big storms. It is important that they lay so many eggs as there is a low survival rate as large puddles dry quickly. Eggs hatch in less than 24 hours and tadpoles metamorphosize into froglets in 9-14 days before the puddles dry up. This is an incredible adaptation, most toads will metamorphosize in 4-6 weeks! Once they have metamorphosized, they eat as much as they can and then burrow until the next sufficient rainfall. They eat beetles, grasshoppers, katydids, ants, spiders, and termites and can eat enough food in one meal to last a year! Incredible!
