The cough reflex is triggered by sensors in the airways and sent to the brainstem as part of the vagus nerves. Links in the brainstem between the solitary nucleus and probably the dorsal and ventral respiratory groups of nuclei send motor signals through the vagus nerves, phrenic nerves and various spinal nerves to the muscles of the larynx, diaphragm and body wall. The phases of the cough include the inspiratory phase when air is drawn in, the compression phase when the vocal cords are closed and pressure builds in the airways and then the expiratory phase when air is blown out of the airways at speed, hopefully expelling the irritant.
