Cough reflex anatomy 

Thank you.I love watching you anatomy lectures, they're so informative and easy to understand. I frequently get boughts of coughing especially when taking oral medication which I've been on since 2008. The worst aspiration I had was a round paracetamol tablet, it lodged in my airway and the coughing began, I was coughing so violently that I could feel my oesophagus snap shut at the end of each cough. This went on for around 5 minutes until I was able to expel the tablet which started off white now it was soaked in blood! I trigger this cough reflex about 5/6 times per month and always due to aspiration. My father died age 59 from 'Regurgitation of Stomach content inhaled into the lungs' this was caused by copious amounts of alcohol. I don't drink. Throught my work in the operating theatre as an anaesthetic nurse in ENT and many other specialities, I appreciate just how delicate the airway is especially the vocal cords.

As a person who enjoys classical music, I think chamber music triggers the cough reflex. The smaller the venue, the more coughing.

Now that you mention it, I notice if I successfully suppress a particularly bad cough, it ends up expressing itself as tearing up in the eyes. Wonder what's going on there...
