Newtypes are the focal point for what happens in Mobile Suit Gundam. With that in mind how would these super powered individuals stack up in the world of Neon Genesis Evangelion?
@E.LA.O ehh... While a Newtype would certainly be effective, chances are they'd be under a whole ton of mental stress from the piloting alone. The very nature of Evas means that a Newtype would probably start losing the ability to distinguish between themselves and the Eva, with the effects only accelerating the more powerful the Newtype is. You know how with a high enough synch ratio, any damage done to the Eva is reflected back onto the pilot themselves? Yeah, imagine that happening _every single battle._ That's not even mentioning the whole slew of problems caused by the newtype discovering that their mother's soul is trapped in the machine pretty much the moment they climb in. The fact that the Angels themselves are technically human would only cause more issues - due to how the Eva works, I wouldn't be surprised if it amplifies the Newtype's abilities much in the same way as an RX-0 unit - meaning that they might end up picking up the thoughts and feelings of the Angel they're fighting. Worst-case-scenario, you get a negative feedback loop that effectively is the worst parts of the EXAM and HADES system _combined,_ and if the Dummy plug system is used, you can tack the NT-D system onto that too. Long story short, a Newtype would result in a Berserk state very quickly. You stick someone like Amuro, Kamille, or Banagher in there and Third Impact's probably gonna be triggered within a matter of minutes.
Ok, I'm really glad you added that last thought to the video, Evangelion's problem isn't the robots, angels, NERVs, etc. it's that the characters never grow past their issues or even find a way to live with it. Although the forming of Newtype bonds between the pilots could result in more mental damage in the event of one or more getting injured, dying, etc the formation of those bonds could have helped the pilots get over their initial problems. I don't see Evangelion ending any differently but I think we could have seen some real character development before "And then it got worse."
@@Oturan20 They do but try to go about it the wrong way, such as Asuka kissing Shinji, only for him to be out of breath and relieved to breathe again, which results in Asuka thinking that he rejected her. Only in End of Evangelion do they understand each other.
I think a newtype could do just fine in Evangelion, given strong resolve or something to believe in. They often argue mid fight, which is pretty much the same strategy some of the angels use. They are used to mental warfare, and more prepared to defend against it or even do a counterattack of their own. Of course, this is all hypothetical. Who knows what events may have befallen them in their childhood. If the newtype had even a little unresolved psychological trauma, they'd be toast. Warm, buttery toast. Also, given the nature of their power is the ability to see into peoples minds directly, a newtype could probably bypass an AT field on their own. This raises concerns that a newtype might trigger an impact without the assistance of the mass produced Evas and a huge naked alien girl. The question isn't whether they would survive, but how great a risk they would be. Regardless, what I really want to know is who would win in a fight, an Evangelion unit or a Gundam.
Depends which Gundam. The rx78 would probably lose. The awakened Unicorn would curbstomp, same with the RX-93 and pretty much every main character gundam from that era onward.
@@neaosmt1562 the scale is simply too different and AT fields are basicly bullshit. Maybe a psycho-commu weapons like the zeong or Nu-Gundam would be able to beat it regardless of the difference in scale after wearing it down and focusing on shooting at the entry plug/core

The Garden of E sim 117 Char could do it. The newtypes would have a greater sync rate with the Evas though compared to anyone else due to their empathy. It's likely that they would inevitably merge with the eva and revert into amniotic fluid by the consequence of lowering their AT field completely. Either way, they're setup to be destined to be tragic heroes, where they'll never see the fruits of their labor.
I'm going to say it would be the opposite? Newtypes often battle each other on a psychic/astral level. At the very least Newtypes would have the ability to fight back against the sort of attack Angel's use against people who don't have anyway to defend.
Calling Lalah a Thot is a bit of a disservice to her as a character to be honest. Her devotion to Char reminds me of an album by my favorite prog band, Opeth. The album, Still Life, is about a man who was exiled from his village for having different religious beliefs. He returns to his village for his special sweetheart, named Melinda. The problem is that Melinda became a nun. She devoted herself to God, but in the end, she still loved this man, as she told him in her confession. She was devoted to her final decision to become a nun, but her heart still belonged to this man. The man kills her out of rage. It's not totally unlike Amuro/Char/Lalah. Lalah did devote herself to Char. However, her feelings for Amuro weren't untrue. Amuro and Lalah are both more powerful than Char as newtypes. Therefore, they had a much deeper connection. They sensed the purity and sorrow in each other, and did choose each other at heart. Lalah, however, was still devoted to Char because that's the kind of loyalty she has. The only difference in this is that her death was inadvertent, unintentional. Not like the man in Still Life who killed his woman out of rage. Also, in Unicorn, Banagher and Frontal did not physically leave their own time. What you saw was art-house symbolism representing an out-of-body experience.
To add to this, Gundam: The Origin really expands the depths of Lalah's past trauma. She was being held as essentially a slave, being forced to prostitute and use her Newtype abilities to help her owner gamble. Char rescues her from this, but he also pushes her into a similar role to the one he rescues her from (making her use her powers not fully due to her own free will but out of obligation to her "master"). Char is also an ephebophile, he's attracted to teenage girls and usually discards them after they get too old. Remember, Lalah is about 12-13 when Char rescues her, and Char is 22 (if I'm remembering correctly). Char's Counterattack argues that this is because he lost Lalah, but perhaps Lalah sensed something about Char that Char himself didn't fully realize yet. Amuro was the first person Lalah meets who is also similarly being forced to use his powers against his will to fight for one master after another--they were also both a similar age unlike Lalah and Char, and Amuro was purer of heart, unlike Char who was hiding his naked ambition and real name/agenda behind the false Char Aznable identity. Lalah essentially rejected a man who was using her as a tool just like all the other men who had come before him. She may have legitimately loved Char, and even been truly loyal to him, but it never started from a place of free will unlike her encounter with Amuro. There is a reason Char is salty about her "choosing" Amuro, because no matter how hard he tried to force her, she never truly "chose" Char. I'd also argue that Amuro is the one who moves on, not Char. Char's Counterattack makes it clear he never got past Lalah and every woman who came after was just a surrogate for her. Likewise, Kamille is an Amuro surrogate for Char. He's trying to understand what Lalah saw in Amuro, since Kamille is essentially Amuro 2.0 and Zeta is essentially Gundam 2.0 (according to Tomino himself). I don't think anyone in Char's life is anything but a tool to him; however, I do like Boofire's point that in Zeta Gundam, Char was trying to reach his goals by a different means that he then gives up due to the events of that show.
I'd like to pose a different view point here. For one, Lalah spends the next 14 years after her death mind raping both Char and Amuro into oblivion. To the point where - in Zeta - Amuro is literally scared to go into space while Char is bound to it. This is signified in a rather glossed over scene in CCA where Amuro is talking to Lalah (this could be interpreted as a delusion of her, but considering everything else in UC I doubt it) and Amuro asks her to leave Char, to which she only vaguely replies that "Char is pure" and to which Amuro rightly replies with confusion and frustration. Secondly, not every woman Char loved was some psuedo-Lalah for him. I'd like to refer to CDA (Char's Deleted Affair) for this. He genuinely cared for Natalie Bianchi (A Zeon officer on Axis) and was going to start a family with her. But due to events she was killed. This happens over, and over for him in different ways. From Natalie to Reccoa to Kamille and most of the OG Zeta Argama, Char loses people he genuinely cares about again and again. Not all of them could be Lalah surrogates, for one, Lalah is almost NEVER mentioned in the same context as the others. And their relationships also develop differently and have different mechanics. Thirdly, Char being some kind of pedophile...is heavily misinterpreted at best. Quess Paraya wasn't advanced on by Char, sure, he doted on her, but it was in a knight-like manner with no romantic undertone. Haman's relationship was one-sided and is similarly misinterpreted. Now, I'm not saying Char did nothing wrong, but he made attempts to make amends in his life. Amuro didn't. Amuro became a recluse until Zeta, and even after that he still just shut everyone else out. The point of CCA isn't to pass judgment on Char or Amuro. It's to show how badly their experiences have traumatized them and how they've not been able or been allowed to move on.
@@solmanthe1st835 My main contentions with this argument are these. About Lalah "mind-raping" Amuro and Char is very loaded language. I don't know if she even really did that, let alone consciously. Char definitely had a small interest in Quess. Even if he didn't care for her emotionally, there's no doubt that he had an interest in at least having her. It's something that was basically noticed by everyone in his circle, from Nanai, to his subordinates. I get that he CLAIMED to not be interested in her, but a person can claim anything, and they could be lying. There are many times when we experience an attraction to someone that others notice, but we try to deny. We kind of like to ignore Char's creepy, and less admirable qualities because he's charismatic and strong, but when you really think about it, he's always been kind of a shit.
This is years old to comment on, but my opinion: yes, a Newtype could survive the world of Evangelion, but just BARELY and that's assume they're a powerful Newtype. Since the Angel's preferred method of attack is mental, a Newtype could theoretically mentally attack the Angel right back, not to mention and easier time syncing up with the Evangelions. Assuming they don't end up like the Phenex, of course, and we know how well that went.
So, hedgehogs dilemma essentially prevents new types from saving the world from third impact... As if the former plan of having plain old mentally damaged teens/homunculi were was something to improve on.
If Shinji is a newtype, I bet he’s going to be more logical in later stages towards his choices than being running away from it and oh, his going to resent his father ...alot !! As for Asuka though, I think....at best it will make her a bit more sensible to her surroundings than what would seem be being aggressive and jumping forward into actions. And Rei, would be a direct result of a emotional cyber newtype.
Yes. Proof. Super Robot Wars. Specifically the Alpha series. The Alpha version of Shinji became a better version. Became a matured individual, and even told Kira Yamato to grow up.
And V Shinji manages to become stable and focused enough to be able to awaken his Eva *without* causing the Third Impact in process, and do that again and again.

In the original Rebuild, it was an improvised move, when Eva, which was making up for a loss of an arm with AT Field, decided to use it as a cannon. In SRW, Shinji, apparently, sacrifices this hand *on purpose* - just to be able to shoot enemies with an AT Field projectile. Don't fuck with SRW Shinji.
I would argue that the series getting worse would only happen if the newtype was one of the ones actively fighting. As you said the newtypes were empaths, something that could help resolve or at least limit the effect of the angels attacks on others (and possibly stemming the problems before the were made worse by the angels) but by the same note they (acting as something of a shoulder to lean on for the nerv pilots) would naturally grow attached to them and the death of one of them, even one like Rei) could lead to a multitude of problems as you stated. Overall i'd call it a coinflip as to it making things better or worse, at least assuming the person in question wasn't a pilot. If the newtype in question was a pilot then its a dice roll where you better be rolling a nat 20.
I feel like it should've been mentioned that Kamille was somehow communing with the dead at the end of Zeta. I love that show, and I've always just went with it because it makes for a good story, but think of the implications of that
I think there would be added problems even for the Newtype if they were a pilot of a Eva Unit. Due to there empathic ability of the newtype. Lets use your example of Shinji being one, due to his mother's soul being within Eva Unit 1 that would cause far more problems for him. Let alone Rei 2 sacrificing herself to stop the 16th Angel. I know that you grazed over it, but it is something to think about.
I disagree, with their piloting skills, I think atleast some of them would survive. They would definitely be traumatized, but they would do a lot better than the Eva pilots. Even if they did all die, the outcome of the world would be much better due to their superior skills.
Yeah, since the new types we’ve seen like amuro and char, they’ve been in the game for years and they have experience under their belts, while the Eva pilots while can be experienced a bit compared to their Eva pilots, someone like say char or amuro would handle the situation better most likely, and that’s also from boofire’s video, it would also mean if the newtype would be normal, but not every newtype is going to be the same, one newtype can handle the situation a lot more than another newtype it just depends on other variables as well
What I am curious is what about a Whisker from Iron Blood Orphans. How would someone whose treated as less than human handle the hopelessness in Evangelion.
On the topic of Newtype evolution: I'll just say that, whether on Earth or in Space, it would occur regardless. Going into space just speeds the process. Newtypes don't know how to mentally defend themselves. Understandable since the phenomenon is still poorly understood. Not only would they have no defense against the Angels mental attacks, but they would be more vulnerable. That being said, they can learn to go on the attack. If they learn how. Trial by Fire. The Time Travel thing in Unicorn was more of a flashback moment.
The time travel thing in Unicorn to me seemed more like a Shamanic Journey than anything else. Metaphysical and spiritual rather than the literal presence of their bodies and mechs at the literal events depicted. But in Gundam NT it was revealed that there was time manipulation involved when Banagher handwaved a Federation squadron into pre-assembly parts via Newtype shennanigans.

In Evangelion, the criteria for what makes an acceptable pilot is not that far off from being a Newtype--the ability to connect soul-to-soul. Indeed, Rei and and Kaworu are almost like cyber Newtypes, especially in Rebuild.
There's also the whole tidbit about Evas having human souls in them, and what would that theoretically mean for a Newtype. Like do Evas feel things? Like when Shinji's Eva went on those rampages and stuff.
This is kind of addressed with how the Psycommu system works. There's still some sort of "psychic residue" or whatever of the previous pilot. In Unicorn, this was used to recondition Marida Cruz, and I think Full Frontal is a Char clone created from the residual energy of his psy-enabled suits. Also, in the newest series set in a totally different universe (Witch From Mercury) it's speculated that the main character's Gundam and its funnel bits contain pieces of human souls.

Newtypes are kinda superfluous in Eva because every single Evangelion is a Blue Destiny unit whose psycommu system is inhabited by the soul of the pilot's dead mother. That's part of the reason why the characters are so messed up.
I'm pretty sure if you sent out Yazan in a Zaku I it would be over quick. We're talking about two levels of technology so vastly different that Gundam's Minovsky reactors might as well be magic. Just hook an outlet pipe up and blast fusion energy from long range. I mean, in Eva, they had to use extension cords to full size fission plants for power. That puts any MS centuries ahead in terms of technology.
You should do a break down videos on each battle from the one year war. It would be interesting to see tactics and state of mind of each side. Also getting your opinion on the battles would be interesting to.
I think it would be dependent on the person. Paptimus was also a NT but was a vastly different type of person compared to char and kamile. Same goes with Haman.
Any chance that you'll come back to your Galactic Century series? I know you're deeply frustrated by the current SW-canon (and, really, who isn't these days?), but you really do have something good going on with GC and it'd be a real shame if it just died like that.
What Angels are have no matter... *Are you SURE about that!?* Newtypes might have a HUGE fucking problem when they do the following: 1. It's an Angel! - They're still considered HUMANS that rejected human form, a possibility due to creations of Adam. 2. Get in the robot! - The Evas are NOT robots, but more or less "cyborgs" just in restraints that look like armor with the SOUL of a human in them! So it could be horror realizing the pilot's mother was the Eva all along or brilliance like Asuka in EoE where they can pretty much fight till they're all out of power to run on.

Theoretically the story can go both ways, but considering the mental state of Anno, I'd say a Newtype will make things worse. Also, for EoE if Shinji was a Newtype during the mind meld scene, oof.
WTF? EXCUSE ME... BUT being turned into primordial soup "IS NOT" a happy ending, AND I don't know about you all BUT "I DON'T WANT TO BE TURNED INTO SOUP"... it is a fate WORSE than death! P,S, Evangelion's mechs are "biomechs" and there "IS RESEARCH" going on to develop them, and Gundams mechas "ARE REALLY POSSIBLE" and that's because we already have the technology to develop mobile suits for the last 30 years but no one has tried to do it yet!
klinton kavanagh Are you deaf? The tone BOOFIRE191 used was extremely awkward and uncertain. He knows that it wasn't a happy ending in any "traditional" sense of the term. But, compared to a *lot* of other plot points and developments in the series, it's one of the tamer aspects. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT, OR DO I NEED TO EXPLAIN IT FURTHER? You're not the only one who can type in all caps. But, you really shouldn't. It's unnecessary and, honestly, a little childish. You can get your point across just fine without doing so. Please, explain the science behind your "biomechs". I'd love to know how those things can generate that much power for their relatively small frames, as well as how they allow their pilots to effectively become gods (if only briefly) with the power to reset reality (not to mention all the other esoteric bullshit that goes on). Mechs, as commonly depicted in popular media, are impossible within the confines of our planet. Gravity would only allow us to build mechs so large before they become incapable of moving, lest they collapse under their own weight. Even if you want to say that you could build them in space, where gravity would effectively be a non-issue, there are far too many moving parts and structural weak points in the frame (about as many as an actual human body) that would drive up maintenance costs to such a point that it wouldn't be cost effective. So, while certain types of mechs may be *theoretically* possible, they would in no way be seriously considered, especially when one could construct a larger amount of smaller, more specialized machines that can arguably perform a specific task better than a mech and not require as much up-keep.

A couple of things about that ending. First, the being turned into soup thing was closer to actual death and rather than "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". You aren't exactly immobile, you are just part of a giant being along with a bunch of other folks. Second, it's not enforced after the movie is over. Third impact was rejected by Shinji and thus anybody who says "I DON'T WANT TO BE TURNED INTO SOUP" is unturned into soup. At least, that is what I have been able to figure.
I feel like the rest of the comments that the sync rate will be really high, close to perfect, but will said newtype survive syncing with an Eva?.... probably not, and they will suffer Kamille's psychic break at the end of Zeta but Waaaaay worse.

Except it actually is, and I've watched it. Evangelion takes a lot of the things that Mecha shows tended to do throughout the lifespan of the genre and either breaks them over it's knee, flips them upside down, or outright subverts them. To not call it a deconstruction of the mecha genre is nuts. Typically the protagonist of a mecha anime has some level of courage and usually starts out mentally stable and well and will usually rise to the occasion, and if or when somewhere down the line they are revealed to suffer from emotional or mental trauma, will eventually overcome it in order to grow as a character. As Boofire states, none of the characters ever do this. Rather than dealing with the pain and trying to move on, they never do, because they want to avoid the pain. Which is, honestly, a very human response. Nobody likes pain. Nobody wants to experience pain, of any kind, unless you're a masochist or a sadist or something. Most people in most situations, given the choice, will choose the option that avoids pain and that's what the characters in Evangelion as a whole, tend to do, and that's what makes Evangelion, it's bleak tone aside, stand out so much, because it's characters are much more human than the typical anime character when it comes to how they react to these things that ate happening to them.
Whether it's a deconstruction or not is seriously out of the question. Gundam inspired tons of Mecha shows including Evangelion (Hideaki Anno said so himself that his work would be nothing if Gundam or Tokusatsu never existed) Both are great shows and have memorable characters (even though I'm more of a Gundam fan) and please let's not argue about which show or character is better.

This trend can be found in most stories with any semblance of conflict in any genre. This doesn't breaks over, flips upside down or subverts the Mecha genre any more than Revenge of the Sith did when Anakin wasn't able to overcome his suffering and grow as a character. Evangelion is an anti-escapism anime not a Mecha deconstruction. Still an amazing show BTW.

I think the trauma is about equal in each series. If your considering "normal people" the pilots or Nerv staff i doubt normal people deal with what they do, fighting angels on a regular basis. Especially considering Newtypes are supposed to be like "super emphaths" they don't only acutely and immediately understand the trauma and suffering they're loved ones go through, this goes for understanding/feeling their enemies trauma too. Who knows, maybe a NT could emphasize with a angel, for better or worse.
your argument is reasonably sound but it has a couple holes. using Char as a measuring stick is a bad idea because he's not just a Newtype he's a psychopath. while Newtypes would most likely be more vulnerable to the psychic attacks of the Angels there's a detail you are overlooking. Namely not all Newtypes are as fucked up as Char and Amuro. Judeau, Banagher, and Seabook are all Newtypes who succeed in pushing past the horror and despair. point of fact that was kinda Banagher's whole stick his catchphrase being "even so..." a declaration that the regardless of the harsh reality he will move forward.
And I believe Uso Ewin from Victory as well, the dude encountered so much shit that made him mature rapidly cause he had to constantly adapt otherwise more people that he knew are gonna end up dying which results in his world to change. And Yeah Banagher seems like a great example of a different newtype, there's also Kincade from Crossbone (who I believe is also a newtype who moved past horrors.)

Gundam already did the realistic take on teens fighting in a war, Eva sure has hell didn't do anything new.People use the term to make them self feel more prestigious for liking something that could be classified as one. even tho they probably know nothing about the genre , having only watched Madoka and still claim it to be of that pretentious term, or As you did with Eva cuz it did what gundam didn't, which isn't true, Eva was just more hard core and psychological
Eva is less about teens in a war setting (cause it isn't really a war setting) it's more about the human condition itself and the issues people have in connecting with each other (shown by stuff like the AT field)
Sooo is it just me or is the design in the thumbnail something we've never seen in the series? Like obviously it's a mass production eva, but the form is waaaaay cooler, and Shinji never fought the mass production type in unit 01, it was Asuka in unit 02
Setsuna F. Seiei from 00 is an innovator, Heero on the other hand is a professionally trained, genetically & biologically enhanced supersoldier... not sure what is his powers (newtype thingy) is though.

A New Type from Gundam would out preform any pilot in NGE. Take the most annoying character in any of the Gundam series and they pale in comparison to the worthlessness of pilots in NGE. I think you are only looking at negatives of a New Type and not looking at the the vast positive traits New Types bring to the table. A New Type would make improvement to the Mechs and out preform even the engineers that work on them. Their piloting skills at a base level are far beyond that of the normal human both in targeting and close combat. You are also over looking the mental breaks of the New Types that are a slow burn and normally take multiple events to truly break. The pilots in NGE are broken to start with and never truly over come this state unlike the pilots in Gundam. (The Gundam pilots stories and settings are very dark and they still manage to save the day in most cases) I am not going to pretend I like NGE. I have watched everything NGE (because I am a glutton for punishment and keep getting fooled into believing this next story will be better) and it is not a good anime in any story telling regard. NGE is convoluted, pretentious, and full of plot holes and contradictions. If you have to remake an anime three times and you still can not come up with a story or ending that makes sense then you have failed at your job. I do however recognize it's place as a very influential staple to the mech and anime genre in general. From an animation stand point it is good and you get to see a lot of very cool things happen but that is the only credit I will give it. If you want a anime in a NGE style with a story that is great, makes sense, a ending worth watching, and who's characters sacrifices carry weight. I would recommend Rah-Xephon.( the anime series not the movie, the movie is the series just hacked and crammed into a hour and a half) I am still going to give you a thumbs up on this video if for no other reason that it creates a discussion and dialog. I respect your opinion on this even if I completely disagree. I would love to know your take on Rah-Xephon also. Thanks for the content as always. lol
1ppo SEED I am sure was some peoples 1st Gundam show. Not mine I am old school but funny you would say SEED considering Kira from SEED is still less of a worthless pussy then Shinji is and he got to fuck that crazy red haired chick Flay in his anime. I also think that the Innovators in Gundam 00 can survive in Evangelion. While similar to newtypes, they actually contain the quantum brainwaves rather than space magic that newtype has, no to mention that Innovators in general are the advanced version of newtypes. Setsuna F. Seiei in the awakening of the trailblazer film at one point did survived a mental attack TWICE from the ELS, the first encounter which resulted him being in acoma but later got up, and the Quatum Burst from the 00 Qan (T).
Can you do a video on. How well would Common Gundams fair in Star Wars. Also, Are New Types the equivalent to Jedi/Forces Users. And does that explain why Jedi are so prone to turning to the Dark Side. Because they are so mentally unstable, and have Problems similar to New types.
